I would have no idea what’s in or out were it not for Angie and everyone here. For those who haven’t noticed already, even when I’ve been made aware of a trend, I’m still a slow adopter. I guess my eye needs to see something a lot before it looks okay to me.

Thank you so much Plonkee for this post! It makes me feel much better about my slowness to notice things. And thanks Roberta for my first laugh of the day! 1973! You're awesome

The last time I was on trend was in 1973, when I wore my first pair of high waisted pants and a friend said suspiciously, "What are THOSE?!."

I watch color trends pretty closely, the Pantone reports and such, because I know my color palette well. Style trends are much harder. You have to get out of your comfort zone, and try things on. You have to really think about the components of the trend (length, textile, pattern, tailoring), and how/if you can make it work for you. So I rely on this site and others to help me see a trend in multiple variations and bodies. By the time i make up my mind it will be last year's news for sure.

I came here to find and learn all these from Angie-she is an angel and articulates and mounches us it all so well -so I can decide if hop or not on the trend wagoons. BTW-when it comes to changing sillhouettes I am really a late adopter. Color/pattern/fabric is Ok but basic cuts it's so hard for me to change....:-((.

Yes. I didn't notice and hadn't a clue. Didn't read fashionmagazines. Now I am better. Thanks to ylf. I am so glad that I'm in the know now and can decide which trend I want to try. I want to look good. Troubleshooting my own outfits I'm still not so good at.
I really don't have a memory or perception for these things. On the other hand I remember all the personal stuff people write in their posts.

A few years ago, I didn’t notice trends because I didn’t shop enough or pay enough attention to what was going on. The only way I became aware of trends was when particularly stylish people would wear something a little different from the norm and I thought, “hmmm, that’s interesting!”.

Now, I pay a lot of attention and am actually ahead of the curve, and when I see someone wearing something out of the ordinary, I recognize the trend!

I don’t wear a lot of the trends but I like to be in the know.

One trend I am very thankful for is lower heel height in shoes, especially pumps. I am supposed to wear closed in shoes for work and for a while there it was only completely flat ballet pumps or four inch heels available. I am loving the renaissance of kitten heels. I also like the trend towards smaller bags. If I have a large bag, I tend to fill it. Smaller bags keep me to carrying my essentials and not a heap of unnecessary stuff.

Actually my younger daughter ( now 24) said this a couple of years ago. Something was said about flares, and I said "But flares are coming back!" I had the latest NZ fashion magazines. She said "They might be coming back in your magazines, Mum, but I'm not doing them until I see my friends and people I know doing them." Until then she was sticking to her skinnies. As a child of the 90s, too, when all she saw and had as a kid were bootcuts, then flares and bootcuts probably felt/feel dated to her. And TBH I am still slow to warm up to them myself, I'm still a skinnies fan like many. The flares trend is taking its sweet time to get to the kind of retail here that most people wear: non-designer.

I think I’m just completely out of step. I like to read the magazines, but it takes a few years for things to shake out at retail level. So I get confused if a trend is new or not.

I have this problem with hairstyles. I don’t have the words to describe what I like or what I’m seeing on others. And I don’t tend to notice when trends change! As a result I am at the mercy of whatever hairstylist of the moment. Thankfully, they are usually pretty expert at what they do.

Yes! Trouser length. I did not notice that everything was cropped or ankle length (I mean not everything but a strong trend).

I feel like I need to pay a lot of attention to the trend posts because I want to know what the trend is and choose to embrace it or not, rather than be accidentally oblivious.

I experience the same thing as you. I have always preferred full length trousers and it took me ages to realize and accept that they were kind of out (for lack of a better word). And I have always been happily wearing full length trousers with straight or wide legs, out or not out. It is only quite recently I started wearing cropped trousers ... And now the trends are slowly changing again, and I am aware of it only thanks to YLF, lol.

I know exactly how you feel.New silhouettes can just creep up on you can’t they.l don’t think that you are particularly slow on the uptake, maybe you just like to be sure that you like a trend before you adopt it.No harm in that.Clothes cost money we can’t chase all of the trends all of the time.

Totally. I'm with you! I didn't know what lots of things were called until I came to YLF. And I feel I probably wear things rather late in their cycle when they are almost gone again ( bought my first bootcut jeans about 2006 when they were on the way out!). It may take me ages to warm up to something.

Angie did a great roundup of trends for this season, which is really helpful as always. When I'm browsing in the shops I find it easy to 'see' some trends like patterns and colours, so I've noticed mustard and brown and plaid and dark florals. But other trends like silhouettes I just somehow don't see until someone says something and then I suddenly realise why I don't like certain items any more.

For example, it took me a really long time to actually 'see' that there was a strong trend towards tighter bottoms and longer or looser tops even though I was wearing the newer silhouette. Or, I wouldn't have noticed that rises were higher now until it was mentioned here but I realised I had felt like some jeans I had were feeling off. Similarly, somewhere someone pointed out that there was a trend towards high necklines a couple of years ago (possibly still true, not sure) and it explained completely why I didn't like some of my dresses as much.

Does anyone else have this kind of realisation? And are there any other things that I might be slow on the uptake on?
