Thanks Guys

Joy - agree with you on the jackets and like the dress

Cocolion - Yes I do look good in halternecks and backless tops. My back is one of my best features, if I say so myself! Only practicable in summer though (nearly winter here in Aus)

Tam - I do often wear empire waists (though DH isn't fond of them - says it makes me look pregnant) but in my case it isn't my smallest spot

Becky - yes very similiar.Thanks

Anne, you and I have a similar body type; though I've been declared an hourglass, my bum and thighs are much more generous than my bust. I always wear padded bras, mainly to make clothing fit better. I do look for items that bulk up the bust area, as Kristine mentioned, like breast pockets, ruffles, etc. And I almost always choose to emphasize the waist. Tops with a higher neckline (such as ballet neck) also seem to make the bust appear a bit more proportional.

Anne I have very little difference between bust/waist/hips. Overall I prefer empire styles that are "nipped" at my narrowest point under the bust. Everything else makes me look waistless - which I pretty much am!!

I think you would look great in halter tops or backless tops. Or peasant type tops that flow down from the bustline. Anything that shows off your broad shoulders and slim bustline. I have the opposite shape as you, and I am thinking about all of the tops that would look better on me if I had a smaller bust. A full bustline sometimes just makes me look bigger than I really am.

My body shape has changed but, at one time I had a shape similar to yours. What Kristine says about jackets is so true. They will help your body look balanced in a way that cardigans can't by adding a bit of bulk. Jackets with nipped in waists or more boxy but cropped enough to show your waist would be ideal.
I couldn't find the exact dress and this is a plus size, but this style with the princess seams for your waist and ruffles starting close to the neck might be a good choice.

Thanks Guys,

I do find Angie's points on pretty pear usual, though I differ from a pear in that I have broad shoulders and that my hips are actually not that big - the measurement comes from my bottom. I have bigger thighs though.

I find Angie's rectangle (upper body) recommendations as useful.

Di it is hard to find the right waist, I agree. I am in the opposite situation from you having a long waist, so too often the waist hits my ribcage.

I have a few specific garments I am wondering about, so will start a new thread when I have taken some shots

I think a nice nipped in waist would probably work for you. It's important that the nipped in portion actually hit at your natural waist though - you don't want it to fall too low, in the pear part of the body. I have a similarly huge difference between waist and hips (although my bust is larger than yours) and a short waist, so it's a bit hard to find structured jackets and things with the waist in the right place, but the search is totally worth it!

As for dressing your body type, I bet angie's posts on dressing the pretty pear would be a good place to start.

I think that's right although every body is a little different. I'm fairly straight and I always look for seaming, nipping, belting, etc.. You could also try tops that are built up in some way up top (ruffling, layers, folds). Combine that with some waist detailing and they'd probably be perfect for you.

I love jackets for this reason, they give me more bulk and structure on top. I try to avoid thin flat knits unless they're a layering piece. Thin flat knit=thin flat me.

First question: I'll leave it to the experts.
Second question: Yes, your instinct is right in my opinion. You are lucky to have a defined waist, it's a great asset.

While I have a 10 in difference between waist and hips, there are only 5 inches between my waist (28) and bust (33). A padded bra might add 1 more.

First question - what tips do you have for this body type

Second question - When I am sporting a fitted top (ie not intended to be voluminous) by instinct has been to have it very fitted indeed around the waist, even if I need to take the side seams in. Do you think this is right?
