Tex - I could try the navy as a fall dress.

Angie - yes, you've seen in the past. I think I ditched the pics though. They look fine in photos, I think, so it's hard to convey in them how I feel.

Jill - I'll give as shot as a tunic.

Runcarla - I own no jean jacket ( I've tried many times, but jean jackets and vests make me feel even more IT than I am. Plus, if it actually cooled down enough there's at least 20 things I'd rather wear. However, I do like this style dress better when I wear booties. I think it grounds the outfit somehow for me. Guess that's something that could work right now.

Throwing a spanner in the works - I got a (cheap) dress like this to wear over a bathing suit, during a resort vacation, and liked it so much I ended up wearing it as a work dress both with and without trousers underneath! A jean jacket and loafers added structure and it was perfect during warm weather. It will be included in my year end top 12 outfits!

If there is enough cotton comfort, and no zips or buttons - use them for pj's.

I have the same feeling about dresses of that length. I have ended up wearing them, as The Cat suggested, as tunics.

You could also try the heavier weight dress with a blazer in fall or with a vest maybe to add structure...

DonnaF - totally agree it's a proportion issue. I don't mind shorter skirts, for example. I've got a pair of denim crop pants. I'll try with that too.

How about with cropped linen pants? So-o-o much cooler than other pants. I have the pants below sized down so they aren't quite so baggy, and I wear them with the linen shirtdress which I have in deep olive.

I can understand the self-consciousness of feeling that a garment is too short. Yet sometimes when I try a garment in a regular (vs. petite) size, the extra length makes it look dowdy. It has something to do with the overall proportions,.

LP - I think you’re on the mark about structure. The navy dress might work with boots and tights into fall (which really is our winter). The other seems too summery, but that’s the lighter weight one that’s getting more wear right now.

I went through this kind of shift too -- I found I got frustrated with knit summer dresses because they do not have enough structure to work as stand-alone outfits. I've replaced most of my old knit summer dresses with woven ones, and the knit dresses I have are mostly winter layering pieces.

If these are too heavy for summer wear, I would keep them until it cools down a bit and try them with skinnies, or tights and tall boots, with a denim jacket on top. If they still feel off styled that way, or not seasonally appropriate because of color etc, then let them go.

I don't have any cropped flares right now. I did once try the navy dress on with white flares, and it was super cute. However, I was in a non purchasing period, and I passed on it. I will try with skinnies to see what I think. I've been wearing less denim in the summer months, and if it cools down I want to wear some more fall clothes. Please let it cool off soon!!

I wear this shape mainly over skinnies, sometimes over a plisse skirt. I'm thinking it could also work over cropped flares, but I'm not equipped for that right now.

I can understand that. I got some dresses like this when I had surgery. I threw a blazer over them and felt OK, but haven't worn them since. They do sort of now fall into 'hospital gown' territory for me...

I got two knit dresses this year from Boden, and I have been wearing them mostly around the house. Even in the talls, both are above my knee by several inches. Also, the navy one is too heavy weight for much over 90 degrees, which it's been for months and still is.

When I go out in them, I've been feeling a bit self conscious, almost like they are too casual/nightgownish out in public. I think it's due to where the hem hits, but I'm not sure. I'm not posting a pic in them because the picture doesn't capture the problem I'm feeling. They photograph (selfie style) longer than they are.

I do like dresses and skirts, but I think if I look for dresses next year that I want to focus on wovens over knits, and that even if I am drawn to something , I'm going to be happier with something no shorter than the knee. I may demote these to swimsuit cover ups. If I wasn't always hot, I'd wear with pants. I am fine wearing them at home.
