Oh do I! A whole parade. My yellow puffy from kindergarten (fuzzy white trim on hood and embroidered vines on the front), my swiss polka dot dress, my I. Magnin quilt dress (pre-Kindergarten), my custom made birthday dresses, the bonnets my mum knit for me (40 years old and still wearing them!), my purple bell bottoms, my red culottes... my blue and black check circle skirt, my dad's beige grandpa cardigan, my dad's golden fisherman's sweater... my mod parka... my Princess Di ball gown (for housekeeping chores)... my Grace Kelley white dress with tulle skirt... my '60s vintage aqua shantung sheath... all the clothes borrowed from my mum for my Rachael Rosen look... my jersey blue wrap dress...

Oh, and I'm not even out of my school girl years yet.

When I first got out of college, mid 70's, and worked in a bank, my favorite outfit was a heavy but silky cotton poplin, black pleated skirt; a crisp, short sleeved sunny yellow blouse; and a cute vesty-thing, made of a black/white birds-eye woven cotton, that was bound on all the edges with black, and sort of tied together at the waist at open sides. I got them all on clearance at the ritziest department store in town - they were from different "nice" brands, not a mix-match group. They fit perfectly, fit my job and personality at the time, looked sharp and neat every time I wore them.

I think about that outfit a lot because it reminds me of how I like to feel and look (polished, sharp, at ease, thought-out but not OTT), no matter what occasion or level of dressy/casual required.

The old Banana Republic had the coolest catalog. I thought it was a much more interesting store back then. I had a chambray shirtwaist dress with a full skirt from BR. I loved that dress. I was a young SAHM on a tight budget then and I had a limited wardrobe but I always felt great in that dress. I remember wearing it with a wide belt, either red or natural. Plus it reminds me of when my girls were little so it has nice memories attached to it.

I'm not sure it's nostalgia for me so much as finding my true aesthetic style that then informed and continues to inform how i dress today. For me it was the 90's minimalism. Long tailored jackets over pencil minis or skinnies. Sharp tailoring, long over lean, pencil skirts or dresses, monochromatic, elegant, simple, kitten heels or boots/booties, LBD. It's not being stuck in any decade it's finding a look that works for my body, my life style and my aesthetic. Truly a breakthrough period for me. I tweak the wardrobe now incorporating trends, particularly footwear that is current but I still love this style and it loves me back!! PS I remember the old banana republic!! Love your choice!

My favoritest clothes ever were from the CP Shades outlet in San Francisco SOMA district in the late 1980s. The cotton clothes were overdyed in yummy lavender, coral, neon yellow, black, soft blue... all sold out of cardboard barrels and priced at $5 or $10 each. I had a few short- and long-sleeved shirts, a jersey dress and a woven cotton dress, some shorts. Next stop would be the Cost Plus Import shop in Oakland to pick up an imported stone necklace or wooden bracelet or a scarf to wear as a sash. You can take the girl out of Boho...

Outfit: long cotton lavender shift/dress worn with matching long-sleeved shirt. Still love the color, the subtle effects of the dye, and the crisp feel of thick 100% cotton. Still have the lavender scarf with a green and red paisley print.

Well there's the orange cordoroy pantsuit with blue gingham cuff and collars from when I was a kid in the 70s ...

Seriously though, I have several outfits from the 90s that I would love to have again. And I had a blue brocade jacket from the 80s that I am still mourning (it met an untimely end due to a violent encounter with a bottle of fermented fish sauce). I have decided that if I truly love something, not to get rid of it because it's out of fashion, but to hang onto it until it comes back around again.

Around 1990 I spent what at the time seemed like an obscene amount of money on a Banana Republic white linen safari jacket and skirt. I felt fantastic every time I wore it, especially with boots and a silky goldenrod blouse. I felt like I was channeling Isak Dineson and ready to shoot down rhinos or wayward professors (I was academic staff at the time).

I tried to find a photo of it. Instead I found a catalog collection on the inter webs from before and right after the Gap bought the brand. Some of those clothes are timeless, like the equestrian outfit Angie showed a while ago.

http://scottcadams.com/bananarepublic/

It's so memorable because it was one of the first outfits that ever felt that way for me (I was in my late 20s-a very slow bloomer). But it was a mystery as to why. One thing I'm learning from you all at YLF is that feeling about outfits can be nurtured and cultivated.

Do you have nostalgia for a long-retired outfit and does it inform the items you would wear today?
