What clever people!

Good reminder Garmenta, I can probably even just leave my bulky coat in the back of the car and dash inside the airport.

I LOVE the wrap/saraong idea! And the Keens idea. I'll be mostly staying in Honolulu but traveling all over the state so rain gear probably isn't a bad idea.

I'm liking the idea of little dresses too. And I can probably pick them up for less than a song right now.

Sounds wonderful! I'm curious what island are you going to? The climate can depend on what island you are on, and even what part of the island. It can vary quite a lot, especially in terms of rain! I lived on the North shore of Kauai and we got all the rain, whereas the southside of the island got virtually none.

A short, lightweight down jacket that you can compress into your suitcase is what I used to take to transition from a cold climate to the warmer one. Also, a large wrap/sarong can serve as a scarf, a dress, a bathing suit cover up and a skirt! Depending on what you like to do, hiking boots or gear type shoes/sandals, like tevas or keens are a must on the rough terrain.

I've never been, but I always hear that Hawaii is extremely casual and about 80 degrees year round. I'd pack swingy little dresses and flats/sandals, clams and casual tops for excursions, and a couple of cardi's for covering up.

For the plane I would just layer up. I'd pick something like slip on flats, comfortable pants (I can't bear to wear a dress or skirt for air travel just in case you have to slide down the emergency hatch- weird, I know!), a short sleeved top underneath a sweater and a coat if you really need it. You will want to strip off as much as you can when you land and change at the hotel when you check in.

I haven't been to Hawaii but I have traveled from the frozen Midwest to warmer points in the winter. You'll need your warmest gear for the shortest leg of the trip--between your house and the airport. Can you layer a sweater and a lighter coat? You won't need it as soon as you land, but I'm sure Hawaiians are used to seeing folks from colder climes carrying their coats from home.

If you live in a cold place there's a real pleasure in putting that coat in the closet for a week and knowing you won't need while you're on vacation--not once!

I am heading to Hawaii from cold Idaho in November for 10 days and am curious what you guys would reccomend for:

1. Wearing on the plane to transition to Hawaii

2. What to pack! I've never vacationed in a tropical place before. This is a really special vacation for me; I am going all by myself and it'll be more of an "Eat, Pray" type of get-away than a "Love" one.
