Nordies ends up with all kinds of crazy returns. Items in colors they never carried, etc. But in the end they make a ton of money so don't worry about that! (-:

It's amazing to me that a store takes returns after I might have obviously worn the shoes. That's just really good customer service. Though I have not done it yet, at the Rack I've seen shoes that say "worn and returned" on the tag, in kind of fine print. I couldn't figure out one time why the price was so low, then I saw it. It didn't matter to me that they were "used", they looked great. That must be where those returns end up.

I suspect only a small percentage of people abuse the generous return policies of stores like Nordstrom and REI. They are businesses and in the end it's about making money, so I'm sure they've figured out how to balance return policies, customer service, and consumer costs.

I just wanted to make sure Renee wasn't thinking I was judging her.
but seriously, like Maya's story... does the store not have any backbone? That offends me because the consumer ultimately pays for these uber liberal return policies.

Kim - yes, I didn't think you meant Renee - totally apologize if it came off that way. I was just differentiating the two things for myself. I actually haven't read all of the comments above, just really Renee's and yours to see where the thread was going. So, to everyone else, my comment was 100% just my general view and I have no idea what anyone has written above.

Wow, Maya, interesting story! I was talking with an Anthro associate last weekend who said a similar thing about their policy, especially if you have an Anthro card because then your purchase is on file.

I have returned used items a handful of times, but never well worn or anything. What Rosie described just seems unethical and abusive, but I don't think most people take it that far. For certain things, you just can't know how they will work out until you get to try them out in the real world and I appreciate it when retailers realize and understand that. Nordstrom has climbed up several notches for me because of this.

One of my friends who worked at Anthropologie told me their return policy is pretty lax too. People would return things they had for over a year, without a receipt. She told me someone even returned a pair of Ann Taylor pants...to Anthro! It sounds outrageous but she is not the kind of person to lie or exaggerate

Kim, I was once with a friend who wanted to return a pair of shoes she'd had for three years, three well-worn years, to Nordstrom. My friend and I were appalled and embarrassed. She wouldn't listen to us. In Renee's situation, I think the return is completely fine and that is what their return policy is for. It is in no way abusive, and even the associate was encouraging you, Renee. I fear if too many people take advantage of these good policies, they might go away. In other words, Kim, I agree with you. They are not leased items.

okay, I just have to chime in here and say that while I certainly appreciate stores that have fair to liberal return policies, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around returning a tent to REI without any better reason than perhaps I want a bigger one. Everything has a life expectancy and I can't in good conscience justify returning clothing OR sporting gear after I have gotten a fair amount of use out of them. Am I the only one who feels this way?

Isn't REI based in Seattle too? Must be all our rain...LOL!

I can assure you that Nordies would prefer you return those shoes (and use the cash to buy a new pair or two). They want customers to feel sure they can return anything so they aren't hesitant to buy anything.

I had no idea REI had such a great return policy, or an annual garage sale.

Reneeb, you are so kind to worry about returning shoes that you cannot wear after a year. Norstrom's encourages you to use their wonderful customer service, and it works for them in making loyal customers. They have told me over and over to try things out and just return if it doesn't work.

My daughter had a pair of pants for about 2 years in her closet that she just couldn't wear. They still had the tags on which is important to help customer service figure out how much she paid. She was afraid to approach customer service, so I did it for her, no problems at all.

Nordstrom's is making alot of money from me and my family and they treat us as if they are glad we are their customers. This has been working for the Nordstrom family for 2 or 3 generations.

Still, your reluctance to take advantage shows great character.

That's great that you were able to return with no issues. I hate when a return requires the 5th degree and ALL your personal info. I really dislike giving out my drivers license #, PLUS my home address, PLUS my phone number etc etc.

Oh yes, REI is amazing. They hold garage sales twice a year per store (for members only) and we got $1200 worth of clothing and misc stuff for Alaska for only $400. The garage sale items are any and all items that were returned, so a lot of them are just "changed my mind" items, in perfect condition. Most of the garage sale items are not used, but some of them are covered in mud, etc. So you can return at any time, no questions asked. You don't even need a receipt.

Nordstrom is a store that truly cares about keeping their customers happy. They would rather you return the shoes and tell everyone how great their service is than to have you keep the shoes and not be 100% satisfied. I have had the privilege of meeting some of their "higher-ups" and they are awesome human beings.
