If I do find some tops there, I will consider the hemming (20 minute drive to nearest store - 10 miles - consider Bay Area traffic and all) but will take the jeans to the tailor since I run errands there all the time. Even when things are supposed to be pre-shrunk it seems logical to make sure.

My Nordstrom recommended to me to take my premium denim home and wash twice according to the way I planned to wash them, then bring them back for hemming.

It ended up taking me many months to get around to it all . . .

I wash on my Handwash cycle and hang dry (after a 4-5 minutes tumble to eliminate wrinkles.) My 7FAM and Paige's DID shorten a little this way.

I always take my purchases home and wash them first even though they are pre-washed. I work right next to a Nordstrom, though, so travel isn't a worry for me. Honestly, I think you could have them hemmed just a smidge on the long side, and it should work. If you do, though, won't you have to travel back again to pick them up?

Thanks Victoria - I could consider many more options if I considered having tops shortened. Why did I "reserve" that for pants and skirts and jacket arms? Silly preconceived notion on my part.

I may be buying more tops at Nordies!

For jeans, most brands are prewashed now you don't have to worry about shrinkage. Personally, I don't like supertight look so if I tailor it, I always leave teensy bit looser so that was if they shrink in the wash later for some reason, its not too bad.
As for tops, I shorten ALL of my knit tops because not only I am petite but I am also short waisted so tops look better not tucked in on me-I'm only 5'1 and even most petites are too long.

If you have used the tailoring service at Nordstrom (which makes sense because it is free in many cases), do you take home items like jeans and wash first and then bring them back?

I was considering this but with the cost of driving back and forth it may not be more worthwhile than going to my local tailor who is pretty reasonable.

A salesperson yesterday suggesting I should buy some knit tops that I thought were too long so had rejected. He said they tailor those all the time but I just hadn't thought about it.

If only I was three inches taller (or two shorter lol)!
