I order from Nordstrom, Talbots and J.Jill because although I can’t shop there due to size unavailability I can easily do in person returns. When possible I pre-shop by checking out color, material, etc. in store. I often order two sizes. I used to feel bad about tying up inventory but now I figure that by not carrying my size my home is the equivalent of a dressing room.

I like all these additions Robin. Another vote for the brown boots...but only if you love them.

The long cardigans suit you and are such a great practical piece.

Robin, looking at the pictures, the plaid sweater really jumped out at me as being so lovely on you. Also, I love the red boots - casual and fun and very on trend, so a nice update.

To add to what Suz said about online shopping, some retailers like Boden list measurements of specific garments. I love this. They list not just inseam/waist/bust for example, but also front rise, back rise, leg opening, hips, sleeve length, front neckline drop, etc etc, all for every size they sell. It makes ordering their more pricey stuff less of a gamble.

Robin, I'm not sure I do know how to make initial picks better than you (I liked yours, here!) but for what it is worth and in case it helps you or anybody, I do have some tricks up my sleeve, as a result of my long practice. (For years I lived in a place where in person shops were limited pretty much to the Gap.)

Here is how I did it. I made city trips once or twice a year and tried on items at various stores -- not to buy, but to figure out the sizing. Of course I concentrated on brands I liked (in theory) and that I'd read about here as fitting well on near-petites with my body type modifiers. (In other words, I read Angie's reviews assiduously.)

Once I'd narrowed down a few makers that had a good chance of working, I focused most online shopping on those and/or on those I can get. (In Canada, so my options are much more limited than yours and apart from a few, returns cost me money -- a lot of money. So I need to be extra careful).

Truthfully, for me, that meant BR, J. Crew (not so much nowadays, but that's another story), and sometimes for tops/jackets, Zara. Eventually, I branched out to Everlane and Boden (with mixed success) and a few others.

I also looked at the Finds a lot and if I found something I liked, I checked to see if the person collecting it had body type modifiers similar to my own. Then I would check to see if I could get in Canada (not always possible.)

I let a lot of potential orders go because I couldn't be confident of the brand's fit. I made a decision in some cases (e.g. Boden) that it was worth ordering and paying for some returns just to figure out the brand's sizing. (We have no Boden stores in Canada.) And if I wanted an item from Nordstrom, I would ask on the forum how it fit before hitting buy.

You all are so helpful! Nice to hear I am not the only one who struggles with online buying. I was thinking about it and if I try on in stores I will often try 10 items and only like one so why do I think this should be any different?

Notsaf - they do come in black and I am considering exchanging them. They also come in a nice warm brown which could be a good color too.
Nemosmom - good point about splitting the wears, I need to take a better look at my closet. Good point about the socks, I hate too tight boots.
ChristelJ - I hem a lot too, thank goodness that is something I learned how to do a long time ago or I would have spent a fortune on alterations over the years!
Rachylou - yes! my problem with online shopping, all that back and forth is such a hassle but I really do need petites...
Angie -thanks for the input - the caramel cardi is sounding like a winner. I admit I really do like the color of it.
Roberta - the red boots are fun aren't they?
DonnaF - nice to hear how you do the online shopping. It does embarrass me to return a lot, not sure why because I know it is silly.
MsMaven - maybe I should focus in more on brands that I am familiar with, I am pretty hard to fit besides being short.
Suz - good to know I'm not alone with returns, some fun stuff you sent back, I think you know how to make the initial picks better than I do :)
pil - thanks!
Shevia - thanks for weighing in, nice to know so many like the caramel cardi
Unfrumped - exactly with the plaid! I like it and want to like it on me but something about it just doesn't work.
slim cat - that's crazy that you got a warning about too many returns!
Kellygirl - It seems pretty unanimous about the caramel cardi! I think it's a keeper! Thanks for the hair compliment - I'm getting sort of used to it :)
Gigi - (my sister's name is Gigi so I love seeing your name pop up here) Good to hear how well online shopping works for you. Maybe it's worth the effort to keep trying.

You have convinced me to keep the caramel colored cardi instead of the wine (maybe both but I need to do some serious trying on first) but I think the plaid will go back - just not crazy about it on me. I'm considering exchanging the brown booties for black, they would be a nice basic and I need some new ones. Red boots still on the fence.

Thanks so much for the input!

I really like the caramel cardi and the plaid sweater coat and the red boots. BUT if they are not making you all that happy, definitely return. You know best what you need and what makes your heart sing.

I'm petite too (5'2"), and I do almost all my shopping online because the selection in stores is abysmal. I probably return 80-90 percent of what I buy online. But I would also say that 80-90 percent of my wardrobe was purchased online. I wouldn't have nearly the wardrobe happiness factor that I have were it not for online shopping. So keep trying until you find what you like!

I'm not quite petit - 5'5" but some tops work for me in petit sizes. Shopping on line is a mixed bag for me - got even e-mail a year ago that I returned too much of Nordstrom Rack orders and they can't guaranty that they will take any future returns from me ( I was shopping for myself and my daughter - double return I guess ). I loved cardigans living in Seattle and my favorites were from Halogen ( brought some from Rack as well ). Usually I only look for brands I know and take into account some other shoppers' reviews as well.
Your first two cardigans look very nice - one with higher contrast, the other - more neutral, almost basic color. May be there is a room for both? Love red boots on you!

I like the caramel sweater and the plaid one, and I also like both boots! If the red ones can be had in your actual size, I'd be tempted to try them.

I do a lot of online shopping and return a lot. I don't know what the percentage is...it depends, really, on whether I'm "browsing" or purposively looking for a specific item. If the latter, I often zero in on brands that tend to fit me well and ignore others, so my "keep" ratio is probably higher. If the former, I simply expect to return quite a bit. I just returned these items today, for example...all ordered in the last month.

I did keep some items that I ordered -- one pair of pants, a pair of sneakers, two scarves, a pair of gloves.

I am a Petite as well, and probably 90+% of my clothing purchases are online, including footwear. And almost all of that is from Nordstrom due to their generous return policy and alterations and repairs. I mostly order in two sizes if available and sometimes in two colors. Even then, I probably return 80% of what I order not counting duplicates. I have no shame about making returns. The colors are often not as depicted, and the sizing for my body may not match the reviews or their advice. I have learned not to fall in love with an item until it has arrived.

Another vote for the caramel cardigan - #2 - and it looks great with both the brown and burgundy boots. Again, the brown shoes are a great match with the new hair.

Gee, I have to say I think all these look great on you! But functionality reigns supreme. I pretty much loathe online shopping. Too much back and forth for me.

Your shopping dilemma sounds familiar. Being petite, I have a hard time finding much that really fits either online or in stores. It takes a lot of time and dedication, and I actually have better luck thrifting. Also, I do a lot of hemming and even shrink things on purpose in the dryer.

Nice cardigans, and my favorite is the caramel one on you. So yummy! Love the red boots, too. Let us know what you decide!

I love the first two cardigans and the red boots on you! If the red boots are comfy, they may be worth trying in a different size (they are SUCH a fun color!). Make sure you try them on with the socks you think you will wear most with them. Nothing worse than a boot that fits in the fall, only to be too tight with a winter sock.... And, the two cardigans may split wears, but if they are truly a workhorse for your life, and fit your budget, maybe it's not a reach to get both - both colors look great on you.

I have rotten luck shopping online (unless it's Nordstrom), but for Rack, I have MUCH better luck in the store.

I love cardigans too, and think the caramel one looks phenomenal on you! I liked the dark boots, but don't hesitate to return them if they're not in your pallette. Do they come in black?

Yes: very common for me to return a lot if I'm not familiar with the quality/sizing of a brand!

I find it helpful to read about everyone's shopping adventures so I thought I'd share my recent order from Nordstrom Rack. I have a hard time finding petite clothes in stores so even though I don't have very good luck with online shopping I placed a large-ish order. Most is going back :( and my online ventures remain mostly unsuccessful.

I am a cardigan girl, they are essential for my work wardrobe as the third piece. I do wear jackets too but tend to reach for the sweaters much more often. I ordered some pullovers, none of which fit well, and some cardigans which I liked better. Also two pairs of boots because, well, boots!

I really liked the first and second cardigan. They are roomy without being too big (kind of a cocoon shape) and feel good on. But I ordered two different colors and think I will only keep one - too similar and would overlap wears. I also liked the plaid sweater jacket but I think it would be too warm and the colors, while they go with some jeans I have, just weren't exciting. I think they don't have enough contrast. It also seems a bit too long even though a petite. Another teal cardigan was just too small. Love the color though.

I liked both of the boots. The red are fun and different without being too bright. I usually order boots a half size large so I have wiggle room and these may be too large. And I'm not sure I like them enough to reorder in my normal size. They are very lightweight and comfortable though. The brown boots are really comfortable and my first instinct was to keep. But the color wasn't what I expected (I thought they would be a slightly metallic brown and they are more just a dusty brown) and don't go with anything in my closet. Of course they are neutral but I'm weird about even neutrals needing to go with something else I am wearing.

All in all not a very successful order. Not sure why I keep trying the online route because I usually return way more than I keep. Is that normal for you who are successful online shoppers?

Anyway, if you made it through my novel, any advice is welcome or if any of you have questions about these items, ask away.
