1. Location: I have 2 Nordies Rack locations near me: one is 30min from my house, the other is about an hour. I do the latter because the selection of designer merchandise is waaay better.

2. Shoes: I hit this dept first because I wear 9.5AA, and welcome the opportunity to pay less than retail for fabulous footwear in my size. I can always build outfits from the ground up. I typically hunt for Stuart Weitzman brand. However, I just scored a pair of Ferragamo Varina ballet flats ($440) for $87 w/tax. *happy dance*

3. Premium Denim: I'm a jeans girl...what can I say?

All else comes after that. I usually go without kids, and on a day when I have a few hours to spend looking.

HTH!

Man, after reading the posts here, I decided to check out Nordstrom Rack to see what I've been missing out on. Maybe my store is just smaller and less stocked, or maybe it's because I was in a hurry, but I didn't find anything!

I'll have to try it again in a few months and see if it improves any.

I like to go there with a specific goal in mind, it is so easy to get overwhelmed. I don't look for shoes on the same day as I look for clothes. It takes way too much time. I hit the women's section first, then the juniors. I think the quality of the women's is better. I ignore accessories until the very end. At the Rack that I go to , they are right next to the cash register with tons of goodies that end up in my basket unplanned if I go there first.

Hey, losermom, I live 30 minutes from MoA and (somehow) manage to get there almost every week Maybe someday we can plan a MN MoA YLF meet up there and we can be the ones to critique each other's clothes!!

Anyway, Elizabeth, I always stay in NRack longer than I planned because there can be so much to look through and try on. But some general advice is:

-don't take kids if possible as they hate this store. Absolutely nothing for them there and it is quite crowded with people and merchandise.

-definitely try things on - don't just take them home to try later. Some things are there because they have been altered and returned, so the size/length may not be what you think, and 30 days to return goes by pretty quickly.

-leave and take a break, get coffee or tea, and head back in if needed. Trying on a variety of clothing is exhausting and mentally draining as you decide how to fits, how it looks, what it goes with, etc.

- be open to surprise treasures, but be careful of impulse purchases. It's too easy to go home with a great deal on shoes you didn't need when you were supposed to be looking for jeans (not that I've ever done anything like that

I only get to the Rack a couple of times a year as it's 1 1/2 hours away at the MOA. That said, I head first for the shoes, then clothing racks paying close attention to the clearance racks, finally accessories.

Angie's advice is great, but I get overwhelmed in department stores and I learned a really good tip from watching Tim Gunn's short-lived style show. He advises walking all the way around and seeing what strikes you before you pick anything up. On your second circuit, you 1) know the layout of the store and 2) know what you've seen that you like. Saves a lot of mental wear and tear!

Even if you go for something in particular, be open to the serendipitous find at Nordstrom's Rack, since it's going to be a bargain.

I have a well thought out strategy as I take clients there pretty regularly - and you don't get Nordies service at the Rack so you need a plan:

You have to go with another pair of hands and shop with a trolley. Fit on as much as you can outside the changing room. Head for the brands that you like first and hang onto the loot. It will not be there later! After 15 items, go try things on before you reload your trolley. Have someone tell you yay or nay as you fit on the items. You have 30 days to return. Do clothing first, shoes later and bags last.

Honestly, I never have a strategy. I actually enjoy going to the Rack with nothing specific in mind. Of course this leads to too many impulse purchases...

Thanks for the responses!

Queenie - I can definitely relate to wandering "aimlessly until I get sea sick and then have to leave."

Sounds like I am not the only one who feels overwhelmed at this store! I was wondering if I was the only person who feels this way or if something about this store in particular is daunting. Sound like it is the latter. I'll definitely take the advice to go in search of particular items.

Elizabeth- first of all, don't worry about when you post a thread in the wrong category-- we all do that all the time.... nobody cares.

My Rack strategy is to wander aimlessly until I get sea sick and then have to leave. haha-- but seriously , I can't shop there unless I have a something specific that I am focusing on.... like denim, or dresses, or jackets. otherwise it is too overwhelming for me.

You are right , they have alot of merchandise so it can be overwhelming.

My strategy is usually :
Hit premium denim
Hit the shoes
If I have bought one or both of these items I usually head out because that is why I shop there. If I am still empty handed I will browse purses and accessories...Have fun:)

I wondering what your shopping strategy is for Nordstrom Rack (or other similar stores)? I find it easy to get overwhelmed with all of the choices and I never end up buying anything.
