Of course the practical implication of this post is that it put EF pants onto my Nordstrom suggestions scrolling view, and I was enticed by a pair of half price EF pants. They are $84. I’m trying the Stretch crepe slim ankle pants in the rye color. I can’t really tell from the description and comments if they will be more like pants or leggings, nor how warm they really are. I’m thinking of them as quality leggings to wear underneath some dresses. On the other hand, I like to keep one pair of khaki or olive pants, (completer piece) and am also deficient in that category.

Oh, I agree, Jenni!!!!!!!!!!!

What I meant to say is that I am no longer going to get hung up on having to achieve a certain cost per wear in my decision-making process. I still want to know the exact number of items per category, the date something was purchased, the cost, and how often I wore it.

But I am no longer going to focus on achieving a low cost per wear. That obsession took the joy out of actually wearing my clothes. Further, it was heartbreaking when I was editing my closet earlier this year and saw how infrequently some items had been worn. Heartbreaking. I made the process much harder than it needed to be.

I'm finding so much value in tracking after doing it now for 2 years. It has given me back a feeling of control over my wardrobe and spending. This is just as well at present as we are spending money on the new house we are building instead. It's true that it does take a little of the fun out of it, which I've seen I think both Angie and Bijou say as to why they don't wish to track. I feel it has been worth it to me, to understand myself better. And I haven't lost all the fun!
I mostly buy bricks and mortar. The whole buy/return/reorder/rinse/repeat must be so exhausting.

I want to second Echo's comment about NAS. I too was pretty upset when NAS products were sold on deeper discount a few weeks later. I lacked Echo's backbone. If I remember correctly, I got a price adjustment by driving to the store.

But as 3Style pointed out, this process takes a lot of time and energy. I am genuinely tired of this process. To help me step away from this mentally-exhausting process, I have been focusing on the price I am willing to pay for a given garment. I just recently started to define what I think are reasonable prices for me.

I am also less married to counting every wear and forcing myself to achieve a set cost-per-wear. That too was pretty exhausting and took away some of the enjoyment. Don't get me wrong, I'll still record information on my spreadsheets (labor of love), but I won't get hung up on the numbers the way I have in the past.

Personally, I think companies like Nordstrom will need to re-think their historically generous positions on returns and price adjustments to avoid alienating their customers. It’s hard to fault customers for using a generous policy to their advantage. Unfortunately, reacting by placing arbitrary restrictions on generous policies, especially when sporadically enforced, ends up irritating customers even more than a restrictive policy might have originally done.

As a non-American, I find it fascinating that those of us who live outside the US are less prone to feeling aggravated about our purchases even though we live in an environment where returns and price adjustments are much stricter. I used to be envious about Nordstrom’s generous policies, but I’m not so sure anymore.

I have had an undelivered item that was still in transit to my home and that was ordered 2 weeks prior yet they refused to adjust the price because they did not have my size in stock.
If they want to enforce the 14 days adjustment they should consider the date of delivery of the item. I found that annoying and returned the purchase.

This made me so angry after last year's NAS that I returned the items and did NOT re-order them. NAS is for fall items, so of course they were hanging with tags still on two weeks later, and they advertise the NAS as such great prices. Well, I won't be fooled again after I've seen the prices reduced further than the NAS prices within a month after purchase for two straight years. In the case of the sale and new fall merchandise, I think it is a terrible policy.

In the case here, yes, I would return and reorder. If the items have not been worn or used, why would you not?

I have lived in the USA for 10/11 of my life, yet I too find this discussion foreign. I buy things at what I think is a fair price for the quality and the time in the retail season (having done a bit of comparison shopping before I bought) and then I move on to the next item that needs replacing.

I don’t see the sticker price as an opening offer in a negotiation, I see it as the price per share, so to speak, and I think about whether or not I agree with the valuation. So to my way of thinking, if you bought the option to wear an article of clothing, decided not to excercise that option, returned it for full price back (which is already generous, some places have restocking fees) and then you bought a new option at a lower price, which could then also be returned at will (in full) that deal is already better than nearly any other type of tangible asset which one can possibly buy. What more can you ask?

Just yesterday, I nearly kept a Nordstrom blouse I’d ordered online, but I was concerned it might ride up, so I put it on with tags and went about business as usual (not eating or being messy, of course, just normal household tasks). And sure enough it popped up twice in half an hour. So back it went today. I was already concerned that the price was exceeding average for that level of quality, but I generally fancied it (it reminded me of both my grandmothers in a good way). The fact that it didn’t perform as expected was the turning point. I’m always very careful to lint roller everything and remove any deodorant smudges and fold neatly and so forth. I feel like if manufacturers are not willing to put in the time testing their clothing to work properly, then they essentially are paying me to do it for them, by offering free returns. If I’m wearing it longer, it’s to test performance, and not to see whether I like it. I like almost nothing, and of what I like maybe 1/3 fits, so it’s very obvious to me when I like something. Though I have to have a cooling off period to get over my initial crush, as I discussed in a previous long post.

Right now, I’m averaging about $70 for nicer clothing items (with a fair number of inexpensive summer things) and roughly twice that for shoes and very roughly 3X for better coats.

I’m having a hard time understanding how $240 is expensive for casual pants and yet $160 is reasonable. There are plenty of good options for pants at AT, Talbots, and even Nordstrom at the $70 price point, and occasionally less.

That being said, I haven’t done a head to head comparison of Everlane or Amour Vert etc (for favoring greener retail) vs EF in terms of longevity of the garments. These newer brands are definitely less expensive. I plan to attempt rounding out my fall/winter wardrobe from Everlane.

I’m not criticizing anyone who does get price adjustments. I’m just sort of in awe as to when people have the time to shop while looking in the rear view mirror so to speak. I’m not nearly as busy as most people, but I’m having a hard time imagining putting “check to see if the price for slightly overpriced casual pants has been reduced,” to my calendar for a date which is four weeks from when I bought an item. It seems like an exhausting way to live one’s retail life.... But then again, I don’t actually enjoy shopping. I just like having the nicest things I can afford at the lowest price I can find, at the moment I’m willing to buy them, and all with the least amount of effort. In other words, I see dressing as an optimization problem to be solved.

This is the kind of post that makes me wary about identifying information. I’m definitely trying to have an exchange of ideas, and I’m not judging anyone. Nonetheless, in my experience, in most venues, people would “bite my head off” for this kind of confrontational approach. I trust that I won’t get that reaction here.

Nordstrom has always done a price adjustment for me, in those specific circumstances, beyond the 14 day window. My items always still have tags on. When I try something on at home, and leave it on a while to assess comfort or fidget factor, i am careful with it and make sure it doesn’t appear like it’s been worn.

I started getting some pushback on price adjustments last year after Post- NAS sales, but the nearest Nordstrom is close to me so I take items in for adjustment, just in case I need to return and rebuy.

But frankly, I’ve had enough NAS items go on deeper sale a couple of months later, *still* before their true wearing season, that some of my enthusiasm for NAS has cooled. If they were to strictly enforce a 14 day period on NAS items, I would barely buy anything because there is not a lot in the sale that I can wear in July, August or September. In fact, I think last year I got a scarf and a bag and that may have been it. But I got some NAS items later on when they went on deeper sale (the black Paige jeans with the raw angled hems.

I'm not even sure this is a new policy, because most stores have a time limit on price adjustments if they even offer them, which many stores don't.

I think it's totally reasonable. There's no way for a sales representative to know for sure the tags are still on an item in someone's closet. Full price was the charge for having and wearing the item when it came out.

Thanks everyone. I totally understand why a store would only have a 14 day window and I've always though Nordstrom's price adjustment policy was overly generous - not that I have a problem taking advantage of their generous policy! My basic reason for the question was to see if I should try talking to another customer service agent since they've always made an "exception" in the past. I'm an accountant used to dealing with the IRS where who you talk to on the phone makes all the difference so I just wanted to make sure this wasn't a similar situation! I was actually was planning on making the decision on whether to keep these items this weekend when I have time so just wanted to hurry and get the price adjustment in CASE I keep them; before my sizes run out! Seems like too much work all the way around really!
!

AviaMariah, the thread from last year is in the NAS section right now, poss the fifth one down ( sorry on my phone can't check or will lose this). It's a thread by J'Aileen entitled "Interesting situation with NAS returns" and will have lots of info for you. In NZ we never get anything like price adjustments or the service you have previously got from Nordstroms. And I naively thought that owners of fashion chains here were pretty rich and didn't need my money to keep them going. But we've had an absolute string of failures, mostly owing quite a large amount of money to creditors. So I have changed my view.
And I understand what Kkards is saying. They may not be able to afford every single customer getting the same items cheaper. Just a thought.

I also feel a little discouraged getting things people obv wore to try out before returning. Jcrew sent me a clearly worn sweater.

THAT is a pretty big price adjustment. Of course, you should return them and re-buy them.

It's a big PITA to haul in and return then repurchase on the spot -- sorry, AviaMariah.

At least for a few years, their policy when I've called has been to only adjust after 14 days if the Size Purchased was still in stock (very fair) -- but of course I never try if my size is sold out.

Since so many people order online now I assume they're doing this to minimize losses; if you send something in there's no guarantee it'll end up available for re-purchase.

TBH it's one reason I do little Anniversary Sale shopping.

Too often things were tags-on in my closet since *** they weren't seasonally appropriate *** and then they'd be in my size and marked down 60% in September. Sometimes they'd have been sold out during the sale, then restocked. [They always price adjusted despite 14-day window.]

Now I "shop" for colder-temp NAS items by sticking things on my list and taking a look come fall at what's still around. If something's gone I may be disappointed, but I try to reality-check myself fast.

That said, some of the lighter-weight NAS pieces started as and remain workhorses for me. ;)

If they are still hanging in your closet unworn, it might be better to return them anyway.

As for the price adjustment, yes, this is their new policy. People will have to decide if it's worth reordering and returning. I assume they're doing this to minimize the number of price adjustments. If they have 3 pair of size 4's left, only 3 people would get the adjustment rather than anyone that bought them.

Ok. Imagine you owned a store. You sold some jeans @ $200. Then you marked down the pairs you had left. And then the people you sold them to all called and asked for a discount. What would you do?
How would you stay in business if you gave everyone the lower price?

No, AvaMariah, you didn’t get the wrong person. That’s Nordstrom’s newish policy. I had the same experience, said the same thing you did and the CS reply was the same. So now I take reduced price items with or without tags to the store, return them and then rebuy them at the reduced price. Crazy!

I know I've seen related posts on this forum before but this is the first time I've had this issue. I had a couple higher priced items that I ordered a month ago. They are still hanging in my closet with the tags on as I haven't decided if they're worth the price. They just went on sale and all sized are still available. I emailed customer service with the above info and asked them for a price adjustment and she said she couldn't give me one because I'm past the 14 day window. I told her that I would go ahead and re order and return to get the price but though a price adjustment would be easier for both of us. She told me to go ahead and do that because she couldn't give me a price adjustment???? I've always had them make an exception before. Did I just get the wrong person or is this becoming the norm?
