I had a big problem with a pre-order a few years ago. It's when they put stuff on the website for the upcoming season, but it's not in stock yet. It was the Kenzo tiger head sweatshirt that was hard to find initially. I pre-ordered in either January or February for May delivery I think.
It was getting close to time so I called, they said it was still in thev queue. Then I got notification with ship date. Then it was canceled. That was the worst.
Also honestly a lot of stock in the stores gets squirreled away in the back rooms by sales associates saving it for certain clients. So it shows in inventory, but the can't actually find it. This has both helped & hurt me.
I remember when my Celine plaid LOVE LIFE sneakers came out I had to buy right then because there was a waiting list. They were supposedly very limited & sold out quickly. Then at the end of the season designer clearance sale, suddenly a whole bunch showed up, including my size at big discount.

That's interesting, Az, about the Canadian stores. I know that one of the things that doomed Target there was their lack of inventory, so I hope Nordstrom doesn't have the same problems. I bet they are keeping wholesale orders modest, so they don't overcommit themselves and have a lot of money tied up. But that can backfire, too.

I'm sure there are unique challenges in trying to keep a hybrid (stores plus online) inventory management system up to date, but other retailers seem to do a pretty good job with it (Target, for example, can tell me if stuff is available at my local stores, reserve them for me for pickup, etc., all the same things Nordstrom can do).

The YLF notifications only go out once a day or something, right? I was getting those for a while but by the time I got the email, stuff was sold out or the price had gone back to normal. I think the fact that they're price matching other stores' prices makes it more complicated too, because who knows when those prices will go back to normal. They used to put stuff on sale and leave it there until it sold out, so you were more aware of the timetable you had to work with and not playing a guessing game.

Nordstrom is a new thing for us up in Canada, and while I love their return policy, I have noticed that they are frequently out of stock. I popped by the downtown store yesterday to see if they had those striped jeans (they didn't), and tried on several other things, but they had very low stock -- hardly anything in my size.

As a side note, I went home and decided to order to black-and-white stripe pants, since they didn't have them in the real store, and, only a week after they first appeared on the website as a new stock item, they are down to one size only! Waaaaah! (Not Nordstrom's fault; they must have been popular. But I still can't believe I missed out after only a week!)

Yep, consider me another irritated shopper. I've had this happen too. I understand that stock might not be updated in real time online, but they should at least update it every night. On one particular item, I had this happen for three days in a row: I kept checking online to see if by chance there had been a return and maybe it was back in stock. Every day, it would show that it was in stock, but when I would add it to my cart and try to check out, I got the message saying it wasn't there. Why in the world is inventory not updated daily?

I empathize! Personally, I have such bad feelings over my holiday ordering that I am going out of my way not to order from Nordstrom online. If I want something that's not in my local store, I order it through the store or go without it.
And Una, I agree with you--I wish I could get notified. I've used the YLF Finds for that--I think if you identify an item as "shopping" or maybe it's "considering," that you get an email if it goes on sale.

Just to add, I also hate when I have something on my wishlist (which I check daily) and then it's on sale and GONE before I see the price drop. There must be a way to get notified, right?

I guess it's somewhat comforting to know I'm not the only one! Donna, the rep did check and it was truly out of stock. Why it was showing as available, I don't know.

When this happened to me once, the rep was able to check inventory at the bricks'n'mortar stores and send the item to me. You can also have a store check inventory at the other stores. If I really, really want something, this is what I do.

Sigh. I am so tired of something showing as back in stock on my Nordstrom wishlist, being able to add it to my cart, and then trying to check out (right away, not delaying) and being told it's not available. It's happened to me at least 10 times, not exaggerating, since the beginning of the holiday shopping season last fall. I just did a live chat with a Nordstrom rep and she said that it's a known issue and they're working on it.

I know inventory management is a moving target, but this is really frustrating. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me ten times, ??
