Joy if it were anywhere but Nordstroms I'd think you're out of luck. They are magnificent so I know you will get resolution somehow. Either go to customer service at your store or call. I would be shocked if they cannot figure out what happened.

Joy, I'd be optimistic, honestly. Money can't just disappear off a Nordstrom GC without it being used or transferred to another GC.

Joy, I worked in CS at Nordstrom. Call your local store's CS department. Give them the GC#. They can look at the history to see what the money was used on. If the person you talk to doesn't know how, talk to someone else. There's a program we use to see GC transactions.

If a GC is retired, you can't add money to it. So something else is going on.

Joy - just one more thing. If you get a Nordstroms Card (not credit card, but debit card) it works just like a regular debit card in that it takes the money out of your account immediately - and also tracks all of your notes. So, if you were to lose them (which I always do) or if they were to expire they could just look them up on their computer and in fact see that you had not ever used the notes. Probably won't help you now - but in the future!

Debbie, I'm pretty sure that I lost the money because the card was "retired" before the notes were added. I'm sure you can use more than one note at a time making a purchase.
Rae, I will try my own call but don't feel hopeful. When I tried to use the card and it had nothing on it, the SA called. She said they told her that the card had been retired and it wouldn't be possible to put the notes on it. Still, they were. I don't have paper copies and they notes are probably considered redeemed when they were put on the card. I just don't understand how several different SA's as well as Customer Service who added my notes to the card over the months never said that there was a problem.
Kkards, it has worked very well on the past to put the notes on a gift card. I've done it for years with no problem.
Thank you each for your empathy. I just didn't want this to happen to anyone else. I'll see if I can get a really patient customer service person who is willing to see if the notes may still be active.

That is weird, and unfortunate. Hopefully if you contact them they can reconstruct the trail of actions and get you your money back.

I had never heard of putting the notes balance onto a gift card until I was at Nordstrom with DH recently looking for some shoes for him - the shoe salesman mentioned that they can do that for you if you are worried that the notes will expire before you can use them (of course gift cards don't expire, or at least they legally can't here in California). It had never been a big concern for me - I'd always managed to spend them on something way before the year was up.

Ugh! I'm guessing you didn't keep the receipts the SAs gave you when you added $ to the notes? Have you called into your Nordies card customer service to see if the notes are still active? If they were never truly added to your gift card, then they may still be in the system, even though you don't have the paper copy anymore.

It IS true that you can keep reusing a gift card after you drain it. But what I'm guessing happened is the SA automatically "retired" the first gift card without thinking about it.

So that no one else makes this mistake. I had gotten into the habit to putting my NNs on a gift card so that they didn't expire. I'd just bought some gifts and used a gift card, then realized I had new NNs and asked the SA if she could put them on the gift card that I'd just used. I liked the colorful card and could identify it quickly in my wallet. I think she had some trouble but did it. Over the months I put more on it,saving up for NAS. When I went to use it at NAS, it should have had over $400 on it. It had nothing. I call said it had been used up and more could not be added. Moral: don't recycle your gift card! Start a new one.
