Haha, well I guess I'm lucky on duties but have NEVER been waved through!
I don't cross the border often and the police make me nervous so I always tell them exactly what I bought

ETA -- if it is clearly marked on the item that it is made in Canada, US, or Mexico you should not pay duty (but will pay GST and HST).

If it's not clearly marked that it's made elsewhere technically you should also get it without duty but I'm not sure that happens.

I know that when I've gone into the little office I have noticed that duty is differential on some items -- less on my Aquatalia boots, for instance -- or maybe no duty at all and only tax.

Smittie!! What? You don't get charged duty?? I am coming shopping with YOU!!

Here's how it is supposed to work (in theory).

If you go across and come back the same day, technically you do not get any exemptions. Having said that, often I tell them that I bought something worth $100 to $200 and they will wave me through and tell me to have a nice day.

Having said that I have also decided several times to declare honestly the approximate amount and then I go into the little office where they calculate duty and taxes and I pay up. Ugh. But better than being arrested.

If you go for 24 hours or more, you get a $200 exemption. Again, you can often tell them you bought a bit more and they'll let it go. But not always.

If you go for 48 hours or more you get to claim $800 worth without duties or taxes. Typically they don't even ask questions if I've been gone that long, or at least they don't ask seriously. I tell them I bought a few articles, they ask me to estimate the $ amount, I lowball it, and they say fine.

Ok, thanks. I don't the no I've ever bought anything from Nordie's online.

When I'm driving over the border, and am bringing stuff back, they don't charge me duty on what I bring back.
Is that just because it's too hard for the boarder agent to determine the country of origin?

So The "duty free" thing in clothing...
I thought with NAFTA and all that, most clothing is duty-free anyway.

I didn't read the fine print, so not sure how long this is on for. I was "testing" an item to see how much the duty would be, and a thing came up saying to use the promo code "dutyfree" at checkout. I didn't notice it advertised anywhere before then, the sneaky devils.
