Judy, you're so right about tee shirt pockets.

SF - check out Cuddliduds, they were my gateway to thumb holes.

ETA a correction: it's Cuddl Duds, no i.

For the record, I LOVE thumb holes in sleeves. Have actually been known to slice them into the cuffs of gearish tops, for all the reasons Janet mentioned. (Also sun protection.)

Suz, I think the Ripskirt doesn't fly open because it's closer fitting than the typical A-line wrap that closes at the waist with one ribbon and a tiny button. And working cuff buttons are a lovely detail that usually indicates good quality.

Bijou, my favorite Simone Perele bras used to have a metal SP charm in front. Every time I washed them they snagged something. They must have gotten complaints because now the "charm" is embroidered.

Z - ROFL

SF - yes, it's worth it to have a piece the way you want it.

Angie - happy to make you laugh!

Roberta - shoulder buttons can also be a painful add-on for anyone who relies on a crossbody bag. Strap + button pressing into shoulder = ouch.

Meanwhile, I scored a NWT aubergine Burberry wool wrap coat on The Real Real. It fits my shoulders but there is just too much heavy fabric at the waist, bunching up around the belt. There's a center seam in the back, however, so I'm about to take this one to the tailor.

I'm sure the bill for this alteration will have me acting like Lucy Ricardo, hiding a receipt from Ricky. (JK, Mr. A is nothing like Ricky.)

I dislike bras and undies with little bows or even worse little charms on them, as they can create funny lumps and bumps under clothing. Generally underwear is that, to be worn underneath clothing, so the additional bells and whistles are not welcome!

Thoroughly agree with the wrap dress, skirt and top comments, wraps in my City which is windy, are a disaster.

I took a bunch of stuff to the alterations place last week, including a pair of shorts & some pants. I had thought they both had back pockets sewn shut, but closer inspection reveled there were no pockets at all! Just a couple strips in the back with trim on them that looked like pockets. She’s opening them up and actually putting in pockets for me. I can’t wait.

This is a fun thread, April -- thank you!

I'm with journey in loving all the "once there for a reason" details -- epaulets, storm flaps, coin pockets. But April, you are so right about wrap skirts and dresses. Except -- miraculously and inaccountably -- the Ripskirt! How come that one does not fly open? I do not know. But it doesn't (at least mine doesn't).

What I don't like is non functional buttons on jacket sleeves. I want those buttons to function. I have a lovely jacket from Hobbs that Angie also owns but the sleeve buttons are merely decorative -- it drives me crazy. At that price, non functional buttons? Argh!! It's clearly not a feature that bothers Angie or she'd have told me! But I couldn't know in advance since I ordered online and I was not sending it back to the UK after paying import fees etc. So I live with it.

I will pile on with hating non-functional features like buttons at the shoulder and faux pocket flaps (especially on leggings - what?). You can't remove them without damaging the garment unlike those wee bits of ribbon at the shoulders.

I also cut off the sleeve tabs! I have tiny, very sharp scissors just for these "alterations".

Good call, April, you are so right, and it's no wonder that the last time I owned a wrap skirt was in my 20s, and I do remember a few unintended Marilyn moments.

I think it's really tops and dresses. Something about when it looks wrap-y from the front and it all ends in the side seam...

Lesley, does that hatred extend to skirts? I find a true wrap skirt more or less a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen...

Angie, this is probably because a.) you have learned to boss your clothes around when something irritates you (e.g. Snipping off those thin thread loops that hold a "self belt" on a garment, or snipping off those ribbon loops meant for hangers that Jaime dislikes), also you're more strict than some of us about saying "I know ___ drives me crazy, therefore I will not buy this garment."

Jessikams nailed my pet peeve, when there's something ornamental that *could* be functional but is not, like button closures that are fake. The thing I have long hated is anything with a wrap detail that is not a true wrap-around. Could be my PTSD from all the nursing tops I had to wear for three kids...

i love all the traditional, there-for-a-reason back-in-the-day, things.like epaulets from military shirts, back storm flaps on military style trench coats and aussie outback coats, and the coin pockets on traditional jeans. to me they don't look cluttered and extraneous, but clean sleek and practical. and if youve ever been caught in a torrential downpour on a long trail ride, youd love those back storm flaps! they can mean the difference between being warm and dry or wet and freezing.

as for the cotton gussets in undies and tights, blame p.r. for that.

long ago there were innumerable articles about women suffering from yeast infections because of the air tight construction of their polyester intimate wear, so companies started slamming in tiny bits of cotton in most everything, not really caring if it actually did anything, but so they could say they had addressed the issue.

forgive the wordiness as well as the lack of capitalization and punctuation, have a gimpy paw so am hunting and pecking with my left finger.

I think too many boots have pull tabs that aren’t needed when boots have zip or laces or both. The tabs interfere with pant hems. I think I can cut some off but sometimes is an issue.

Tops with side vents that are very long and if go above waist.

Stealth cut- outs in the backs of tops. I’ll see something that looks great on the rack , but pull it out and go, whaaaat?

Elastic waist skirts without a side zip or enough stretch for my waist- hip ratio.

Pants with belt loops only on front so that belt slide up in back. Yes, I can try to go find some matching cord or something at JoAnn’s to sew a back loop, but, really.

Wearing a sweatshirt tucked into sweatpants right now - it keeps in the warmth

Granted it's a smoothly elasticated waistband - I tend to take the drawstrings out of all my elasticated waistbands (like on the skirt shown). Can't yet decide what to do with the leftover ties though...

I love those rolled sleeves tabs but can never seem to find them - please send all your bad luck this way instead, lol!

Olive green reminded me of the bulky drawstring ties at the waists of sweatpants. They create lumpy areas under tops, and many of them don't actually gather the fabric anyway, because elastic does that. I don't ever tuck tops into sweatpants, does anybody?

I kinda like epaulets because I often feel my shoulders can use a little more emphasis.

Coin pockets on jeans, yeah, LOL. Pretty much a traditional touch that is useless in practicality.

I immediately cut out those hanging loops. Nothing quite like putting on a nice dress and realizing the stupid loops are hanging out the armhole. My clothes stay on hangers without them just fine.

A few days ago I wore an old blouse (10+ years old) that had those rolled sleeve tabs hanging down inside the sleeves, which I never roll and secure with those tabs. I set the top aside to cut the tabs out of next time I have mending to do!

I’m annoyed by large labels sewn into the hems of nice scarves. I don’t want a big label hanging out of my scarf, even if it’s designer. I have to spend a little careful time with the seam ripper to get those out.

Built-in bras in sporty casual dresses — I’m looking at you, TitleNine. Maybe this works for smaller-busted ladies, but even at my skinniest, they never worked for me to any significant degree. And now the idea is just laughable. Can’t they make a version without the built-in so-called bra too??

I like epaulets. They help keep my shoulder bag strap on my shoulder even without buttoning it over. (Which I did see done in a WWII-made movie.)

As someone who’s spent time working in retail distribution centers and in back rooms of stores, these hanger loops really do work.
Honestly I’m more peeved by the things that are missing than the things that are there, most of which we have talked about here.

Yes Phoebe re: chest pockets. Instant dealbreaker for me!

Gotcha re: trench flaps. I thought that could be the case, but it looks odd to me. These are the same sort of coats which often have no hood, which to me defeats the entire purpose of having a raincoat.
@April the retail photography seems purposely deceptive. I notice it a lot on Amazon, with models holding coffee cups or whatnot, standing in odd positions, and a Lot of photoshop.

Thanks to all my fellow peevish folk for these observations.

Some reactions:

JK - if I had to unbutton sailor jeans, I would never ever wear them. I can only guess they went for convenience with the zipper, but I can see how it would add a lot of bulk.

LJP - not sure about the actual purpose of the cotton gusset (thanks for the correct word!) but I do find that multiple waistbands and all the layers that accumulate around your midsection when you're dressing for cold weather is unpleasant.

When I was working, I remember days when there were underdrawers, tights, a skirt, the base of a long stretchy camisole, a HeatTech, and then whatever was on top. Too much!

Sally, Zaeobi and others suggesting sewn-pocket reform: I had this issue yesterday, when I wore this jacket. The flaps appear to be merely decorative, but I'm not sure.

This is probably less about clothing than about online retail photography, but I intensely dislike when a garment is only shown with the sleeves pushed up to the elbows. Retailers usually tell you the sleeve length in the text, but not always.

The second one I object to is when a garment's color is given a less-than-clear name. Midnight - is it black or very deep blue? Fog - you'd think that would mean gray, but sometimes it's a pale silvery lavender.

I love how Uniqlo does this (or used to) - if they have 6 different green Heattechs, each one is just labeled "green."

Flappy ties of any kind get cut off. So capris with a drawstring on the cuffs are knotted off and trimmed, as well as those rolled sleeve tabs. Nothing dangling will survive.

I feel that way about a lot of ruffled garments. I’m a big ruffle wearer, but the ruffle tacked on in the middle of the garment, I don’t get. I get ruffling an edge, but not the ‘appliqué’ ruffle.
