Those new knits look perfect for an Australian winter. I have not heard of Birdsnest, it looks like a great site, thanks for the introduction.

It is 18C or lower every night and morning here in Colorado,, it is good for using a fire pit or hot tub., but just feels nice, not cold. Right now it is 18C with 15% humidity and that was with afternoon rain. My DH runs warm and wants the air conditioning on. It will get cooler, so, no. This is summer in the high country. It is hugely different from Kansas although both are 4 season areas. It is what you get used to, when we lived in Southern California people in puffer coats said our blood would thin out. It did and we felt the slightest cold much more. The TV weather just said that it was warm out there. Crazy,

Hello everyone, thank you for all your sensational ideas! Thanks to your tips on suitable fabrics, I bought a few lovely non-wool warm things! Birdsnest is an Australian online retailer that is based in a rural area and supports independent and Australian labels as well as offering a great online styling service. I always have luck on this site :). I love my new warm items!

Ha! Anne, my Canadian sister-in-law said exactly the same about my parents-in-law’s New Zealand house! We didn’t know how to heat houses properly in our countries since we thought we had temperate climates! It’s getting better with time, here- rules about insulation and so on.

Thanks for the shout out Angie. Yes indeed welcome from another Australian (it's 20 degrees and I am wearing a dress, long cardi and tall ugg boots though my feet are rather hot)
I second the suggestion of uniqlo. I just bought a turtleneck fleece skivvy from there that's so cosy https://www.uniqlo.com/au/stor.....gI43PD_BwE

Australian houses do often tend to be cold inside on winter, often colder than outside by the middle of the day. My Canadian aunt said she'd never been as cold as inside in Australian house in winter.

Birdie77 - welcome to the forum. I increasingly am finding my skin will not tolerate woolen knits and am increasingly buying cotton, silk, viscose, acrylic and cashmere knits. My favourite knits are from Cue, Uniqlo and Boden. Boden is only available online but the sizing is the same as Australian sizing and in my experience very consistent.

Hi birdie77 and welcome from a Kiwi! I also find it cold at 18 degrees C :)
I do wear wool but don’t like it next to my skin, usually. So in our winter I wear what Cee wears with a high-necked skivvy under the woollens. I think the USA forum members call those “mock turtle necks”.
Our family also has polypropylene thermals.

Brooklyn and Cee, 18C in Seattle = many in shorts, tees, tanks, sandals and dresses because they think it's Summer. Accept me. I'm covered up in three layers (cami, top, denim jacket, jeans, pants, sneakers), because I think it's mild weather. It's hot when it's 30C plus. Growing up in Hong Kong and Cape Town will give you a very different perspective on what is hot. High five to both of you!

Thank you Suntiger & Brooklyn! I agree that a great coat can make a huge difference but during these #iso #workfromhome days, it’s nice to have cosy warm things to wear inside. Hope you’re all keeping well and safe in other parts of the world. Fashion is a fun and frivolous mental escape from all the terrible things happening elsewhere at the moment.

Just wanted to say hi and welcome!

I like cotton knits because they feel soft against the skin. Cotton/silk blends in particular feel great. They can be hard to find however. A lot of stores do viscose/nylon knits. I think they feel pretty good as long as the viscose content is high (I look for at least 80%). Any lower and they sometimes feel stiff and scratchy. Not as warm as wool but easy to find.

Welcome! I can't wear any animal fiber next to my skin either, though coats are ok. In winter I wear cotton, poly, or velvet- with a cardi or jacket as a second layer. I don't layer under, because my office temp is unpredictable. Then I make my coats do the "heavy lifting". That said, I commute by car (BC19) and spend as little time possible outside when its under about 50F- so ymmv! You probably have milder weather than me though. It gets below 0F here some days, though normally 30s in winter.

I read someone was looking for warm clothes and my Canadian senses tingled!

To me, nothing beats a real warm winter jacket. I could wear a t-shirt under mine when it's -20 degrees out and still not feel cold.

But if you're looking for warm clothes to wear inside, then try to find a thick but soft, velvet-like sweater made with a blend of cotton and polyester or possibly some viscose. And if you really want to feel like you're living under a warm blanket, add a large cowl neck.

Also, I find that the length of the sweater makes a huge difference on how warm it's going to feel. A mid-tigh length sweater is going to feel a lot warmer than a hipbone length sweater even if both are made from the same material. I wear longer sweaters with thick leggings or slim pants to avoid looking like I'm drowning in fabric.

The idea of layering with warm underwear like other people suggested is also great. But personally I don't feel comfortable in multiple layers, and I can't stand wool either, so I wanted to share another option. Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words, and for the YLF support, birdie77. Lovely to see you post for the first time. An official welcome!

There are lots of Fabbers from Oz here, so you're in good company: Anne, Bijou, Brooklyn, Cee, Lucy - to name a few.

I echo the ladies. You're after cotton/viscose/rayon/silk/polyester blends. Try fun sweatshirts too.

I wear a camisole EVERY day, and thermals in Winter. It really works.

As for silhouettes, try looks like this. Nothing too constricting over the mid-section, and quite flattering:

I don’t wear any wool either for the same reasons. I have found some cashmere to be tolerable as a second layer.

For warmth I find a camisole under everything makes a surprising difference. I’ve got a couple ones from Uniqlo’s long underwear line, but the others are just knit tanks from Target.

My sweaters are mostly cotton and you can find thick ones if you look. I also wear a lot of flannel and other tightly woven shirts in the winter. Polyester fleece is a great option if it works into your style.

Acrylic sweaters are warm and give you the chunky vibe like wool, but I don’t buy them anymore since they always always pill on me and and look cheap quickly.

Thank you everyone. I’ve never thought about silk but that’s a great idea. Thermals are the best! I just feel envious when I see people in warm cosy knits because I know that the minute I wear them, I’ll start scratching but they look so tempting.

I don’t know if you are thinking casual or workwear, or your personal style, but silk blouses can also be a little warmer under jackets and sweaters.

I’m with you on fitted things in the tummy area! I run super cold. Sweaters themselves are often not enough for me, because the wind goes right through them. I’m all about thermal under layers.

You might look at fleece and velvet or velveteen. I find polyester very warm. You might also invest in silk undergarments with long sleeves and full length legs. I can and have worn these under a long sleeved dress and not needed a coat. They also make excellent PJ’s, especially for travel.

Long sleeve skivvies under a knit may help.

Good luck, Birdie.
