Thanks Kari - I'll ask about them (when I finally get around to choosing a frame!)

Anne, you and I are just about the same (my prescription is -3.5 and -4.25.) I can read about 8" from my face without correction, and my eyesight is still changing. :(

The last two times I've got new frames, the opticians urged going to a lighter weight composite because if I used the standard lens, it might be too heavy & uncomfortable on my nose & ears. They also suggested the polished edges when I got a less chunky pair of frames because the lens sticks out farther than the frame. I haven't tried the rolled edges that Merry mentioned but might ask about it next time.

Robyn, That sounds encouraging!
Kari. I am shortsighted and wear glasses for almost everything ( I can read book in bed, but that's about it) My script is -3.25 and -4
I do wear contacts, but not everyday, as I have sensitive eyes

Anne, if your prescription isn't very strong, you may not have heard about the polished edges if there's no way you'd need them.

My vision is pretty terrible, and I switch between glasses and contacts about every other day. I'm grateful that there are so many thin, lighter-weight composite lenses available with anti-glare coating so I'm not stuck in coke-bottle lenses.

Hi Anne - I've worn them now for several years and the feedback from friends is that it's easier to see my eyes, especially in bright sunshine. And professionally, if you are being photographed or interviewed, they help to get your "eye messages" across.

Thanks eveyone - I was away for the weekend

I was meaning for normal glasses, not sunglasses. Sometimes when I have bought glasses I have been asked if I want these - the main advantage stated was better photography, but also they said they would look more professional and be better for communication.

I hadn't heard of polished edges before!

If you're talking about anti-reflective... I just got new glasses with this coating, and honestly, I can't tell the difference. I haven't really checked out if there is less reflection seen by others - if this is true then they're probably worth it.

In the past I have had issues with more scratching and this coating, but I haven't noticed that yet on my new glasses. Here is a writeup:

As another glasses wearer, I'm also a fan of anti-glare lenses and polished edges. Depending on the frame style, sometimes I also get rolled edges to minimize the appearance of my bottle-cap lenses.

If anti-glare is what you mean by anti-reflective, I think they also help the effects of glare on computer screens if I remember correctly.

I'm also a fan of anti-glare lenses for eyeglasses. I get a lot of flares when I'm driving at night anyway (not the best night vision) and anti-glare seems to help with that.

I also like that when I'm photographed in my glasses, you can see my eyes without a big reflection from the camera's flash. It makes me think of my glasses as a fun accessory that enhances rather than blocks my eyes. Definitely worth the extra money in my book.

I've been told to be careful with anti-glare lenses because the are more prone to being scratched, but I've never noticed a major problem with this.

Another glasses feature that is worth the money for me: polished edges. My prescription is strong enough that the lens actually sticks out a bit from the frame, but with the polished edges you really don't see it.

Anne, do you mean sunglasses that don't have "mirrored" lenses? Mine aren't mirrored, but they are plastic, so they are reflective. Does that make sense? Anyway, I prefer non-mirrored shades because the mirrored ones remind me of the 70s and 80s. If you're going for a retro look, I think it's fine. I haven't actually seen those kind around while I was shopping for sunglasses.

Oh, or do you mean a non-reflective treatment for the lenses of your specs? I think they call that anti-glare here. Anyway, I have anti-glare, and it's really great, especially if you live in a very sunny place. The difference is that if you look at the sun shining off a car, it's very bright and blurry, right? But if you have the anti-glare stuff, it cuts down on the shininess off the car. It makes it easier to see things without squinting, I guess. I don't know, my lenses just came with it, but when I got my specs, they showed me un-treated lenses, and it made a difference. It was like the difference between polarized and non-polarized sunglasses, if I remember correctly.

Anyway, not sure if that helps. I recommend it.
