One new thing:
- Read more novels (after a year of reading almost none!)

And a few things to continue from last year:
- go to the gym regularly for cardio classes and yoga
- maintain a mostly gluten-free/dairy-free diet for continued digestive health
- Stay on budget, especially for clothing
- Develop and expand my style
- Stay connected to myself, my husband, my dog and my family
- Do my own "work" for my own growth, before I expect others to work on themselves

Lovely thread - thanks for starting it!

I don't make hard and fast resolutions, per se, but I do try to reaffirm each year that I'm moving my life in a direction that aligns with my long-term goals and dreams. To that end, here are some things I am being mindful of as I start the new year:

1) I am continuing my practice that started four years ago, after my mom's death, to keep overcoming my fears -- to keep trying new things even if they sound scary or unrealistic for me (for example, starting my running habit).

2) As above, to do the things I've always wanted badly to do, but put off for whatever reason (I.e., my big solo cross-country road trip, taking at least one big photo workshop or expedition each year).

3) To push my art practice further and start teaching workshops.

4) To address a health issue that has been looming in the back of my mind. That means scheduling some surgery for this spring, after I complete my half marathon. I've been putting off thinking about it, so I will bite the bullet and tackle it when I get home from vacation.

5) To continue improving my overall health and fitness with balanced eating and physical activity.

6) To spend more time with my friends and family who are going through some difficult times.

Hmm, I tend not to make resolutions because they can so rapidly turn into a guilt-fest when I break them. However, I do want to work on the following:

- long list of small but neglected DIY tasks (esp. my closet and the front garden)
- mental health stuff
- paring down and better organizing stuff in the rest of the house
- making the house look more "designed" in general and less haphazard

My house is the biggest thing I want to work on this year. I was a student when we moved in and didn't have much time or energy to invest in it beyond making it liveable. It definitely has a cluttered "student" vibe to it at the moment and I'd like to work on making it more stylish and easier to keep clean.

What a lovely idea for a thread, Denise, and such a cute yet deeply thought-provoking cartoon!

I'm not the world's most optimistic person; in fact, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool cynic, so I especially admire Angie's last one. I might even borrow it this year, as adjunct to my first goal, below:

1. Model a more balanced lifestyle (that's LESS multitasking, oddly enough, Self!) for my child/ren.
2. Keep new healthier eating and exercising habits alive after the baby's here on the outside!
3. Be more assertive for both my own self and on behalf of those I love (especially my child/ren --- yes, another 'resolution' occasioned by pregnancy, wouldn't you know it?!)
4. Find work I enjoy that also honours our budgetary needs without shortchanging myself or having to pinch pennies.
5. Stop waiting for my parents (and other seniors around the family) to change their attitudes and change mine to develop sang froid in the face of their quirks, while drawing the line as necessary for my own peace of mind. I don't *have* respond to anything with botheration, not even to aggravation. Deep, calming breaths! (::waves at Lyn*::)
6. Spend more time with the SO --- and make room in our lives for him to do likewise (that means taking on a few more chores around the house, even if I don't do it to the same standards or take longer at it).

Great idea to put them in writing.

I have been researching healthy lifestyle and my plan is to focus less on the outside and work towards a healthier inside including body and mind. This includes eating healthier and reducing stress. Both Angie and Denise have articulated the idea better than I could. I want to be healthier and more positive which means happier to me. Less worry and more content.

Wishing you all a wonderful 2013.

Thank you for sharing these, I love all of your thoughts!

I try to practice gratitude on a regular basis.

I don't have a radio (or heat) in my car, so I practice a mental gratitude list when I drive. I start with the basics -- grateful for a roof over my head, grateful for basic transportation and money for gas, grateful for a job, grateful for my relationships (bf, family, friends, YLF, customers), grateful for my health, grateful for my pets...

I'm getting my sister's 2002 VW in a few weeks though... yay heat! Yay radio! Now I have something else to be grateful for.

I think I should add "grateful for all of my great clothes" to this list!

I prefer quantifiable resolutions so my first two are
1 - Buy and eat more frozen raspberries! I dislike and so eat hardly any fresh fruit, but I do like these. Currently I only buy about 2kg a year, so although they are expensive it won't break the bank to get some more
2 - Read 12 christian books this year

The last one is my main one but I haven't really worked out how to quantify it - to cut down on procrastinating. This is a major fault of mine.

My only resolution is to get a journal article I have been working on since 2008 (2 mat leaves and a brutal first review after submission to an Old Boys journal which made me drop it for a couple years) finally published, and also another book project on its way. Those are my two main academic duties I really want to discharge.

Other than that, this year taught me how well I don't deal with constant stress, so I am going to try and be more mindful of the big picture as well as the small details. I am blessed with friends and family and a generally rewarding job, so I need to appreciate that more

Nice resolutions, everyone!

I no longer make resolutions either, because I can't resist the temptation to make too many, or to make ones I can't keep, and then I feel like an idiot. But I do have one immediate plan for 2013: to learn photoshop. I guess it's sort of a resolution because it's something I've wanted to do for a long time and have never managed to find time for. This January, I will. I've looked into different colleges -- now it's just a matter of picking one.

It's not a resolution that's as noble or meaningful as some, but for me it's a step toward an end goal, and that is, realistically, the best I can do.

HAH! That's a brilliant cartoon, Denise. And your resolutions are as deep and meaningful as I would have expected.

I don't make resolutions at all, but I am impressed with all of yours!

Each day I try hard to think about the glass as half full and not half empty.

Each day I don't want to take what I have for granted.

Each day I want to be less judgmental than the day before.

Each day I want to wake up and go to bed happy.

I am grateful for my life, & try to keep tolerance & kindness (for myself & others) at the forefront of my mind.

Here are mine:
1. Don't sweat the small stuff. If you can make out this Roz Chast cartoon -- I'm talking about the "Why did I say/do that" or the "feeling wronged" column. I want to better let go.

2. Practice acceptance. Goes hand-in-hand with #1.
