Well, this is coming from a person who does not have a lot of hou-ha events that require dressy dresses, and no longer wears strapless and spaghetti-strap and so on to any event, but to me, spaghetti-strap dresses usually have a limited role in the wardrobe.
As opposed to, the perfect LBD or something.

So it sounds like that may come under the category of, you don't have to buy something just because it fits. Which is something I am trying to keep in mind!
So keep on with your plans and focus.

Did you read Angie's blog post on shopping list categories? You still can be open to surprises, but this may not have been the one.

I think if you are trying to refine your wardrobe it is best to stick to a list. Having said that - if an item was an 11 out of 10 I'd buy it. It doesn't sound as though the dress is perfect for you, so I'd suggest leave it:)

Good for you for walking away!! Sometimes it is the sale talking to us and not the clothes.

If only I *would* impose some rules on myself!

You did the right thing. I still miss that navy A-line skirt and brown jumper I passed up but you know, missing and regretting are too different things.

Good for you for walking away. If you are still thinking about it a week from now, go try it on again and see if you still love it.

Being able to walk away can be almost as satisfying as buying something! I've realized that all the pieces I don't wear much are things I had my nagging doubts about in the store, so I think going with your gut was a good decision. I recently walked away (after two lunchtime trips to the store and trying on 5 colours/sizes in all) from a top that was about 70% off and a big fave with ylf. It looks great on so many posters here and I really thought it was a no-brainer but... just not 100% on me. Plus I think I am sick of certain winter trends and need to move on.
A spaghetti strap dress would probably require a jacket for day-to-day wear right?

Sounds prudent to me! I always figure I can go back in a few days or a week if it is still on my mind and if the item still there it was meant to be and if not it wasnt....

I am trying to improve on my approach to shopping as I have many orphans. I have recently adopted a firm stance that I wont shop anywhere that does not have a return policy because I often find things look better in the store, or I think I have things that will go but actually dont. I love that you were so strong, had a list and followed it. For sale items I have started to ask myself if I would purchase it at full price - sometimes that helps

I had a gap between picking up kids so I stopped in at Meltz, which is a store that sells a mishmash of branded and non branded items at discount prices. I really want a blazer, and I thought they might have something. They didn't. Which is odd because blazers are in all the shops at the moment.

Now in theory, I don't actually want to be spending money on clothes. It's a week until payday and I am trying desperately to save so that I have money in reserve for when I become a full time self employed doula later in the year. Some of the money I have thus far in savings was originally put aside for my new, thinner wardrobe, so I shouldn't feel too guilty spending some money on clothes.

I browsed for some other items from the shopping list I have been creating, but found nothing I liked. I did however find a chocolate brown maxi dress in the softest fabric, that looked so pretty. It had spaghetti straps and a copper brown sequin detail on top (and I definitely do not like shiny sequinny things but these did not offend my eye for some reason). The dress was about 3 inches too long though, so I would have had to shorten it before I could wear it. It was going for a steal and I wondered around with it in my hands but at the last minute left the shop without it.

Not sure whether I was strong or silly... I find it really hard to find clothes that fit and flatter, which this dress did, but at the same time, I am trying to find some more focus in my wardrobe and style and although this dress could qualify as rather boho, it wasn't on my shopping list and I though that the money I would spend, though minimal could be spent on something else more important in this last week before payday.

Anyway, I am home now and still wondering whether I shoulda bought the dress!

So - what are your self imposed shopping rules?
