I cannot say enough great things about the Victoria Secret Lace-Waist shortie (Kelly included a link). I size up one size. They are cotton, they come in a bzillion colors, they never ride up (no wedgie), there is no muffin top, they are inexpensive....and, of course, no VPL. I LOVE them.

I almost exclusively wear the CK invisibles hipsters anymore and I don't have any problems at all with them rolling down. They do stretch as you wear them, so slightly snug at try on is ideal. I can't say the same for the Jockey version of laser cut hipsters. Those drop like snapped elastic on me. They are awful. (FWIW, I used to wear the natori too, but the invisibles are truly impossible to see.

I've been meaning to come back and update! It turns out that my old cotton Fruit of the Loom bikinis offer the least VPL. I'd moved those over to workout gear only after stocking up on some nicer undies during one of the Soma deals. The Jockeys are pretty good, too!

The DKNY Fusion Hipsters ride/roll too much. I think I threw them out already. The Commandos roll down. The Bali pair shows VPL and the elastic within the lace started coming undone after one wash. Boy shorts ride up on me, no matter the brand.

I hope I can find more of those FOTL!

I get panty lines in everything...it's a thorn in my butt! I have yet to have a mishap with the Soma vanishing edge panties...they are awesome, and last for quite a while if you don't put them in the dryer.

Boyshorts fit horribly on me. It's worse than a panty line, it's a panty speed bump back there. The concept seems fool-proof, but I just don't get it!

I am SO SO sorry, just realized I had made this post with incorrect information. It is the Tactel I like so much, much smoother and clothes just glide right over. I usually get them at Macys when on sale, along with coupons. I do hope I did not lead anyone down the wrong path. I am not even sure they still make the Modal.

Another fan of the Jockey...I have really enjoyed the more recent version with the lace trim. Make sure to get the modal and not the other, softer, kind of fuzzy one. Good bum coverage!

Would anyone like to read some ongoing updates? I picked up several more pairs to try, and realized one major thing: my Athleta Prima capris are just about impossible to wear without VPL!! Not a single pair works with them. Several pairs work with skin-tight yoga-pant-style capris, though! And a few other pairs of tighter pants/jeans that I have VPL problems with.

So, shopping while wearing my Primas might have been too stringent a test. I've decided to aim for minimal VPL so I don't drive myself crazy. Here's my report so far:

Gilligan & O'Malley modal thong and modal boy short w/lace -- both were terrible. I already threw out the boyshort because it rode up like crazy. Keeping the thong to see if I can ever get used to it, and ordered a cloth liner for it.

Shimera boyshort -- not bad, but they do ride up a bit. I want to give these another try. I also have a bikini or hipster style that I was going to return, but I decided to keep them. Will report on those once I get a chance to wear them.

Commando cotton bikini -- I surprisingly liked these, BUT the top rolls down. If it was a string bikini with less fabric up top, they might just be perfect. They are cheeky, though it only took a few hours of wearing before I didn't notice them anymore. (I'm probably returning a pair of CK invisibles hipsters, because they look identical to these and I suspect the top will roll down the same way.)

DKNY Fusion Hipster -- similar to the Commando with the unfinished bottom edges, but with a finished band at the top. No rolling at the top! But they ride up noticeably, unlike the Commando pair. Still, I like the unfinished edge so I want to give these another try.

Jockey no-VPL promise bikini -- these showed serious VPL in-store with my Prima capris, but there's virtually no VPL in any other of my bottoms, including skin-tight workout capris. I don't know why they work, since there's clearly a prominent edge at the bottom. I'm wearing an unforgiving t-shirt maxi dress from Target today, and these show minimal VPL. (I had originally tried the Shimera bikini/hipster today but it created muffin-top with this dress.)

Still have left to try:
CK Seamless boyshort -- seem very similar to the Shimera boyshort.
Bali One Smooth U No Lines bikini -- I almost left these behind, but they seem very comfy and are the prettiest of the bunch.

Returned/returning:
Hanky Panky boyshort -- too cheeky, ride up noticeably. Still had VPL.
CK invisible hipster -- fear these will roll down at the top.
DKNY bikini with very wide lace edge -- this one seemed promising, but the back has a V seam that looks like a thong under clothing. Funny enough, the leg holes don't create VPL, just that V seam. No thanks!

This thread is hilarious! ClearlyClaire, Mo, Marley, Karie --- I am with you all, sisters!!

I've tried just about every style and they all crawl up the yin yang on me and/ or leave lines. Honestly, I once tried on a pair of jeans WITHOUT UNDERWEAR (my OWN jeans, I hasten to add) -- and I STILL had "VPL." --- must be that "double chin" effect, Marley. My Kut from the Kloth jeans are the worst offenders with the placement of the pocket detail. No matter what, it looks like VPL. Since I love everything else about them, I'm living with it. :(

Anyway, my best solution so far has been those Jockeys that Gaylene linked to. They are not perfect but they do it pretty well for me and they are not horribly expensive and also go on sale. Now, if you are looking for "pretty" or "sexy" you will have to look elsewhere. This is why I also have a never ending search for "pretty," "sexy" bras in small sizes!! Because if my undies are going to be relentlessly plain and utilitarian, then my bra had better have at least a little bit of fizz.

I'm going to try to pick up Jockeys today. But an interesting thing happened with the Commando pair I wore yesterday and last night. By the time I needed to change, I didn't even notice the cheeky line. BUT! The top kept rolling down so it looked like a string bikini. If it WAS a string bikini, it would've been totally comfortable, LOL.

I almost always look like I have panty lines even when I don't. My issue is that I have a swayback, and that's the way pants look on me unless I do a swayback alteration. Did you try the Jockey skimmies? For me, that's the best of the bunch - pun intended - they bunch the least :)

I also like Bail briefs.

I've had good luck with Warner's "no wedgie" hipsters. Instead of a narrow elastic in the back that digs in and makes a line across your butt there is a wider strip that lays flat and stays down.

If I were to buy undies that covered my entire cheek - they would practically have to drop down to the back of my knees - because my butt cheeks have dropped that much! So . . . I just go with thongs - Hanky Panky - once I tried them, I was sold and never looked back. I always stock up at the NAS - and they pretty much last forever if you don't put them in the dryer!

All I can say is that every style crawls up where it doesn't belong on me, always has. Many thongs are unbearable as well. I only like the ones I like because they lay flat, near the nether regions, but don't crawl up to hide. TMI, I'm sure. But the more material you have to crawl the worse the discomfort. Just my experience.

I agree that sometimes granny undies work better than smaller undies at reducing panty lines.

I do think that it's difficult to get some of the cheeky undies to fit right. They do have a tendency to get bunched up. I think that's why people wear thongs—better to have just a small strip bunched up than lots of material! But if the underwear isn't getting bunched up on you, and you're just reacting to not having your whole cheek covered, I would just give yourself some time to get used to them. I switched underwear styles about a year ago, going from grannies (which I'd worn my entire life) to bikinis, and it took me at least a few days, maybe more, to adjust. Now when I wear grannies, I feel like I'm practically putting on armor!

Pastrygirl, I am SO WITH YOU! I want my whole cheek covered as well, TYVM. If I wanted a wedgie, I'd jam a thong...err. Sorry. But seriously.

A few years ago I bought a set of the Soma vanishing edge underwear. The first, trial pair I bought was nylon. It worked great and was super thin and stayed in place. Then I found out they had the same style made of modal, so I bought the rest of my set in that fabric. It was okay at first, but since has relaxed and bags out, somehow. The silicone doesn't grip my bum anymore and the whole thing flaps around my rear like a drag racer's parachute (at least that's what it feels like). They aren't worn out looking (I never put them in the dryer) but I still need to replace them. I'm pretty sure you can see VPL when I wear my white jeans, so I usually try to leave my shirt out in back and just semi-tuck the front.

I just got a 2-piece bathing suit from Lands' End and I really like how the bottoms are cut. The leg openings are nice and snug, and they manage to contain my entire bottom. That's really what I want in my underwear. Does that mean I need granny panties? I feel like the line they would create would be so much less obtrusive than a line creeping diagonally across my cheek. What is it with the VPL paranoia anyway? People show their bra straps all the Live. Long. Day. and I've seen more whale tales than I ever cared to see. Whew. I apologize for the rant.

OK, if you are looking for backside coverage, try a pair of these No Panty Line Jockeys:
http://www.jockey.ca/catalog/p.....tel-hi-cut

These are actually my favorite travel undies. Comfortable on a 12-hour flight, can be swished out in a sink and dried with a hair-dryer, last forever even if you throw them in the washer and dryer, and are almost invisible--emphasis on almost--with good backside coverage. They do, however, have a very faint line if you are wearing very tight, very stretchy legging-type pants, but with that kind of pant, and if total invisibility is a must, the only real alternative is a thong. These Jockeys are also frequently on sale--3 for $25 in my neck of the woods--so the price isn't bad.

I wear Jockey. I buy the kind that promises no VPL. It is not perfect but a few weeks ago I wore a pair with my Lululemon Yoga pants because all my thongs were in the laundry. I was surprised to see that there was no VPL!!!! I rarely wear thongs and now I have lost another reason (Yeah!).

I also like Jockey because they cover my large butt. At least to me it seems big. All the other undies only cover half the cheek. Sexy maybe but not for daily wear.

I'm totally with you pastrygirl in hating all those that ride up the cheek in the back, they equal painful wedgies, worse than any thong (I need to try Mo's thong rec though). This happens when I wear boyshorts too.

I have a few kind of over-sized granny-cut briefs with high waists that are okay, but still show some VPL under tight or thin material. Actually the most comfortable 'invisible' panties I have are a version of these: http://www.maidenform.com/inti.....s-weightle they basically smooth everything down mid-waist to upper-thigh and aren't uncomfortably tight (I might have sized up, don't recall). They are thin enough to wear under skirts in hot weather, and work great for me under thin knit clingy summer dresses and skirts where otherwise undies are pretty visible. I don't think I've tried them under pants much though, mostly because my pants are thick enough or dark fabric so regular panties are fine.

So far, the recommendations that I've tried have been a bit of a bust. I tried some G&O modal undies from Target (thong is a no-go). I found Shimera boyshorts and bikini, Commando cotton bikini, and Hanky Panky boy short at Nordstrom Rack for cheap. I thought the Shimera boyshorts had the best chance, but they ride up all the live-long day.

The others, I just don't understand! Here is my question: when undies fit like they do in the links below, where they don't cover the whole backside... do you just get used to it? I tug, tug, tug constantly to get the bottom of the undies to the bottom of my bottom, but then that exposes the top. Am I abnormal to want fabric to reach and cover that bottom curve? Is it so unusual? Please, I'm asking seriously! Every pic of undies these days is cheeky, and now I'm thinking maybe THAT'S normal and I just have to get used to it.

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ha.....ts/2905011
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/co.....ni/3060189

ETA: The backside pic in this link is the very definition of a wedgie! How do people wear it like this? http://www.herroom.com/calvin-.....anty.shtml

That was the one I was going to try next, but I don't think so. Help!!

Thanks, all! I've made a list. I just might try one of those modal thongs... at least it will help when I need to shop for additional underwear, LOL. (That's a great idea, Gaylene.)

I tried the Soma vanishing edge but couldn't tolerate the silicone. I have several other pairs from their 5/35 deals, but they are all VPL central! It wasn't such a problem in the winter when I wore jeans and long tops. Now things are showing!

I also don't know how I'll feel with any of those styles that don't cover the entire cheek, like the Hanky Panky boyshort. Just looking at it, I think it would drive me nuts. But I'm willing to try anything at this point!

I really don't like synthetic underwear, but after reading Mo's raves so many times, I'm really tempted to try the Target G&O modal thongs. Modal is made of cellulose, so it shouldn't be as objectionable as non-breathing fabrics like nylon.

And I'm *so* sick of my boyshorts producing a little roll at the top of each leg every time I pull up my jeans.

Commandos are the best because they are raw edged at the top and legs so there is nothing to create a line. At all. For me, they are also shockingly expensive, even if purchased on sale at NAS (which I did two years ago). I also bought low cut lacey panties with raw edges in nylon and not cotton like Commandos at Ross once and they were just as excellent in their absence of VPL. The Shimera boy shorts above and anything not a raw edge at the top give me VPL where VPL might be an issue.

I highly recommend soma vanishing edge panties. they offer variety of styles and materials, so you can choose one that works best for you. underwear is well made and fits true to size. they often run promotions, e.g. 5 for $35 and send out coupons if you subscribe to their website. I wasn't sure about silicone first but it works
