I like the cropped skinnies. I think they work when worn with the right sandal, but it seems like it's dependent on a warmer climate and season.

Although, I must say, as a tall woman who is often asked where she parked her canoe, it is nice to have a "cropped" option so that abbreviated pants are more likely to look intentional.

Angie, does that mean you actually saw baby bootcuts in stores?? I've been hoping to find a decent pair for months and the selection has been terrible. Hopefully this means there will be some in stores soon.

My only tiny faint praise for them is they work well for some of my boots with a more fitted lower calf/ankle. Too much scrunch there wads up in the boot, but an ankle length skinny works well. It relegates them to being only worn with mid calf or higher boots though.

Meh. I'm not a fan. The combination of that length and the skinniness is not flattering on those of us who carry more weight in the bottom half. Besides, few regular length pants are long enough on me -- these just hit an awkward above ankle spot that's neither here nor there.

And here's my big beef. They are not short or roomy enough to be cool in hot weather, nor long enough to keep ankles warm in cold weather, so for me the wearing season is very limited. I'll pass all around.

I have never worn skinnies. I do wear leggings with a tunic, long shirt or mini skirt even though I am 58 (so there Daily Mail!). I can not stand feeling like a sausage. I like my denim to be a bit looser. This is why I love boyfriends and straight jeans.

I have some linen pants that are wide legged but I have longer legs and am tall (5'8"") so they work for me. I would pass out from the heat in skin tight jeans in the summer.

Cciele described the differences perfectly. Cropped skinnies are ankle length, and suck the living daylights out of you.

I prefer my own cropped pants to be much shorter - calf length or there about - and not as tight.

As for alternatives, I vote low rise pleated denim silhouettes, culottes, harem pants, baggy tapered styles with full length inseams, linen cargos, tapered Bermudas, breeches, baggy chinos, boyfriends - anything at all - as long as it's not that unflattering length and a "sausage casing fit". And when you're petite, ankle lengths are either full length or not short enough. And when you're regular height like me - you want to climb the walls - it's all too short.

I like these! But mostly because I'm short (just over 5'3"), so they are like the perfect length for me. I'm neutral on them when they are actually worn as intended.

Always Trying, I think what most of would like is for some choice because a cropped skinny doesn't fit every figure or taste. I actually would love to see a slim, straight-legged linen pant for my spring/summer option, or a midi length gaucho style in a soft silky swishy fabric that draped from a fitted hip, or even a looser, slouchy floor-length pant in a gauzy cotton. My athletic calves and non-existent hips and rear means that a leg-hugging cropped skinny that fits my lower leg is ridiculously huge on my hips.

I think, when we talk about "cropped skinnies," those are leg-hugging pants that end around the ankle. Capris are cropped pants that fall below the calf and above the ankle.

Many here are fans of pants cropped on or above the widest part of the calf, because they tend to look more flattering than ones with lower hems.

But much depends on styling and footwear.

In other news, I think I'm getting used to the look of cropped skinnies. It's everywhere in the Bay Area!

Would you all please describe what you want in alternative styles?

I hope to never see skorts, coulotes (sp) , gauchos, or any of those things ever again, and will never wear anything like that. Wider leg pants in any length shorter than full length pants are called capris, right? If women are suppose to look so awful in capris what is the alternative? If they have skinny legs we just call them cropped skinnies and not capris, so that makes women buy them because someone loudly and clearly told them not to wear capris.

I certainly can see knowing what lengths and widths of any kind of pants and or bottoms one feels comfortable wearing, and feels looks best on them. However I have to add, and it has been said on another board in a discussion of frumpy, wider leg bottoms are cooler in hot weather than something that is tighter to leg to let air circulate, and they will wear them when shorts are not appropriate or for any reason not to wear shorts--or bare legs with skirt.

Another thought, as baby boomers are aging more women are aging out of bare legs in shorter skirts or shorts, so we need alternatives that don't make us suffocate in the heat.

Guess it depends on just exactly one is talking about. skinnies that fit very tight on legs almost like leggings, or skinnies that are big enough on legs to not ride up when one sits down. that is a look and feel I don't wear in any length. Only have two that I keep for wearing inside the tall boots. I like the ones that I have seen called crops that are just below the knee, and ankle pants that are maybe an inch or so above ankle bone. These are the two lengths I prefer for warmer weather.

I'm petite and pale legged, but I wear slim capri pants in the summer. It gets hot, and I don't feel comfortable wearing shorts. I just make sure to wear the right shoes with them. It may not be my best look, but I don't really care when it comes to being comfortable on weekends. I don't wear them to work or out to eat or anything.

I guess cropped pants are longer than capris, right??? Those I don't wear.
