I downloaded the Stylebook app today and photographed the outfit I wore today and played around a bit trying to see how it would work. I think it is fun but it will be slow to enter all my items. I will need to parcel this out in small doses of free time.

Well done! I look forward to hearing how you are doing with this.

I set up Stylebook a couple of weeks ago but haven't been following up with it. This motivates me to keep it up.

OH, I am so glad you did, Staysfit! It has already saved me from duplicate purchases... making it well worth the pricetag. I am into my second year with it and it works perfectly for me. It is also fun to look through my looks from Late Summer last year and see how my style has changed.

Send me a PM if you decide to purchase it or have any questions. (The erasing thing is a bit tricky to understand at first.)

It's amazing what we can learn from our own closets! I was convinced that I needed skinny jeans this fall, and then I tried on all of my jeans yesterday, and -- while I don't have many pairs -- I do have the skinny thing covered, and also, I learned yet again that I don't love the look on me anyway. Do we forget? Just get pulled in by shopping? Just love the styling of a magazine picture? All of the above???

I love what you are doing and that DD helped you. I'm really interested to see what you decide about the many ivory tops and the duplicate jeans. These lessons are among the most interesting and illuminating posts. Please keep us updated!

Quietgirl, I just looked up stylebook on the internet and it made me laugh! It seems to do everything my DD and I are trying to do! If it really works well, it's a brilliant idea. I love the idea of having a visual instead of a verbal description. When DD and I were creating the spreadsheet I asked her if there was a way to upload photos of the items! She told me it would be too cumbersome. I am looking forward to showing her the app!

I know that can be a huge job! I catalogued all my clothes last year into an app called Stylebook. Not only are my clothes catalogued, but I can take them with me everywhere I go.... at least if I have my iPad with me! I use it when I see one of Angie's posts. I immediately go to my virtual closet and translate Angie's vision to what actually exists in my wardrobe. I store it in the Stylebook category called "Looks". Later, when I went to get dressed, it's all recorded for me. For non-visual me, it is a lifesaver!

My DD who is gifted with computers helped me create a spread sheet in Google docs. Which is in the cloud, (I now know that isn't in the literal sky).

We listed item item type, identifying details like color, collar style, pattern, sleeve length, etc. We listed brand name, size, price if I knew it (estimated mostly) and then a column for times worn.

It's a long and cumbersome process in my closet, but it will be well worth the effort once it's done. In theory I can rearrange it in various ways. Make new lists from it, etc. To do all that I will probably have to get on the phone with DD who will walk me through the insides and outs of manipulating a spread sheet.

My best guess, if I include my athletic clothes, I'm half done. DD is heading back to school today so the rest of the task will be mine to complete on my own.

I know DD and DH will hold me accountable. So far so good! No spending, and, I'm on my 4th Ivory shirt.

I also think it's a good insight about your buying pattern. Continually trying to address a fit and flattery issue you were vaguely aware of -- yet not understanding how -- it's kind of like bashing one's head against the wall again and again. I've done the same thing, and it's befuddling (not to mention painful.)

Wow! It's helpful to have someone to "report" to when you have to go on a shopping fast. But you can spend this time to prepare yourself for some fruitful shopping after the fast! Continue cataloging your closet and wearing what you aren't sure about, and research what clothes are best for your body type.

You can pick some favorite items from your closet and style them with other closet items to make outfits. This can be a very helpful exercise, because it is here that you will find wardrobe holes. For instance, you might find that you love skirt X and have several tops to wear with it, but you don't have any shoes that are just right for the outfit. You could put the shoes on your shopping list. That way, when you do get back into shopping mode, you'll have a very specific shopping list and will stay focused. And most important, you'll be happy to see that your new purchases are working well with your already-existing closet.

My daughter started to help me catalogue everything in my closet. I had the idea of putting pins on items when I wore them, but she convinced me it would be better to take them off. She also suggested that a catalogue would help me to know how many of each items I own, and if there are any gaps that need filling.

In the first hour we realized that if there are any gaps it would take us a while to find them amongst the still very crowded clothing items in my closet. Despite my recent closet clean out, we catalogued 196 items in 2.5 hours and still did not finish the clothes folded on my shelves. I have to admit that there were more than a few areas of repetition. Not only did I have a large sweater collection, but an almost equally large t-shirt collection, and of course there is my ever expanding collection of Ivory blouses. I have repeatedly purchased 11 pairs of the same style of blue jeans, and my daughter laughingly said I could be on the hoarding shows her college friends watch. How humiliating!

Rather than let shame take over, or be overcome with the fact that I am a shop-a-holic. I prefer to admit that I have made poor choices and try to understand why I have done this repeatedly. I suspect part of my problem has been thinking I have a pear shaped body when I really have a straight/boyish figure. When I read Angie's suggestions of how to dress for my body type a lightbulb clicked on in my head.

I have begun to sort through my numerous Ivory tops, wearing one every day, and trying to see what I like and don't like. My daughter however, has added a new challenge. She wants me to refrain from shopping for 30 days starting today. That's until September 26th. No clothes, no jewelry, no accessories and no shoes. She said I could replace used up make-up and purchase buttons for the sweater that I am knitting. I told her I had some back ordered items. She suggested that I call and cancel them.

So here it goes, I'm about to enter No Spend September.
