I totally agree about colours and psyche being intertwined. Currently there is an on-going health crisis in the family and I feel best in black and olive. Maybe it is connected. Whiskey is fabulous on you.

‘They do not make me happy!’ Wise words, Sal, when considering what colours to wear (and which to put on a ‘do not buy’ list.). I have made the mistake of choosing black when buying a puffer - twice! - and regretted it both times. ‘Black goes with everything’ didn’t turn out to be true. I would have been better off choosing the olive, or the navy, or…any other colour!

Blue and brown look great together. For me, it would be navy and cognac.

I haven’t been wearing pale pink. I don’t know why. I look at it and then choose something else. Since I quit the handbell choir, I haven’t worn any of the things that I had for our performances, mostly combinations of black and red. I think I’ll donate it.

I'm still wearing a bit of black since it's the easiest for work - however not outwear or jackets. My blacks are graphic tank tops with other colors mixed and couple pants/skirt. I like the dark navy as neutral but it's often not the right shade to combine with other pieces.
Your colors are pretty fantastic and you always find great combinations for your outfits!

Interesting Carla! I feel the pandemic changed what colours I wanted, I just felt a lot more somber at that time and through the next year or more so I dressed in darker colours more often. I still do that in winter, which is right now for me, with the occasional bright colour on some days, like red. I think I find my black clothes in winter quite soothing, and also black is our national colour, connected with our most famous sports team the All Blacks.
So I agree with you it’s mood related, and possibly light related also. I am certainly not unhappy currently even though I like my blacks!

Interesting. I think blues and browns are great on you Carla - although I also love seeing you in red and black as well. I too am moody with colours so I support this totally!

I have been "thinking" about trying to limit my colours more to

White/off-white
Black-charcoal
Navy
Toffee/Tan

With brighter accents
Orange
Bright green
Corals

There will be exceptions of course. And I do like experimentation with colour. But I think I am going to stop trying to make light grey, fawn/beige and olive work for me, in general they do not make me happy!

Love your addition of whiskey browns and blues, seems a nice bridge between the starkness of black/white and bold brights.

I do wear black, but not very often in summer, I feel the need for a bit more colour and lightness at this time of year. Greys and faded blues are currently my dominating neutrals, but I'm also enjoying various shades of orchid, mauve, rasberry and even some teal in the mix. It seems the seasons are the biggest factor when it comes to my colour choices and pattern preferences.

Carla, you look smashingly good in rich earthy browns like whiskey and dark blue (and red)! *happy dance* I like you in light blue with a strong white too. Fun to switch things up.

I completely moved away from black and grey in 2016, and haven't looked back. I don't want to wear them in patterns either. 10 years and counting! Dark blue is my black. Tan and toffee are my grey. I wear every form of saturated cream, off-white, and white.

I stopped buying all shades of olive in 2020. I don't mind a bit of olive in a pattern though.

My non-neutral palette is large, although focused. It's the same colours over and over again for decades. Exhubertant sour brights, and some pastels. I am very emotional about and affected by colours. I get a rush wearing the colours that make me happy! I am sad when I wear colours that don't. Same goes for the decor in our home.

New-to-me colours are tans, toffees, whiskey, cognac, saddle, and gingerbread! They work with my darker blonde hair, and I'm loving them! They have a bigger place in my styke than ever, and feel extra horsey. Unexpected :)

Nodding along to your life events->emotion (either felt or desire to be felt)->color (either as an expression or to evoke a certain emotion)

Checked my closet after reading this post and it’s black black black navy or whites/taupes. Somber for some, structure for me. I do have a marigold matching summer top and shorts which I love wearing in the night of summer—tho it’s always a little surprise/shock when my eye lands on it.

I guess I express emotion in clothing in the exuberance of shapes.

Interesting shift and observations! I like the light blue-whiskey combo for you.

I’ve moved away from black as a default, and have mostly resisted adding black tops to my wardrobe. It’s feeling a bit harsher with my aging skin, although I think I still wear it reasonably well. I think the key for me is to wear black tops *with interest* — a distinctive cut or texture, and not just a default.

Lately I’m moving away from prints and patterns, which feels unusual for me. Scarves and an occasional stripe are my exception. Somehow I’m just feeling a more refined and slightly simpler approach and solid colors support that — I’m more content to let my jewelry, footwear and accessories do the work that prints did in the past.

As far as color, I still mostly stick with the same core colors that have populated my wardrobe for decades: black, grey, white, greens, blues, burgundy/plum, and a smattering of coral, red, rust and brown.

After wearing very little black for years, I have just added a back in a few black items. Also some white items! I’m not really in love with any particular colors right now, though. Dark florals seem to be my thing these days, in various colors.

Brown and blue are lovely on you and it’s nice that you are finding and wearing colors you are feeling. It sounds like you are editing out black in order to replace it with navy then?

I have been especially attracted to white and recently found a top in a shade of blue that I love. But am actually wearing more black than usual. I am very moody, including with my color choices. Blue and brown are a favorite combination.

And also, to wear more black or white. Neutrals calm me and it feels needed right now.
I love blue and whiskey brown on you!

I like your environment and mood connection thesis. I'm slowly editing out or not buying as much colour now - I'm acutely aware of how I want to present, and what I don't want to look like (as I age) and quieter colours seem to appeal to those feelings. I also don't have that exuberant / extroverted personality that supports colour . I was on a rust/cinnamon kick a couple of years ago but I don't wear those pieces much at all anymore.

I do like your blues and whiskeys - they suit your soft and low contrast features and hair very well.

A while back, certainly before the start of the year, I decided that I wasn’t going to add any more black items to my closet. Black is a good colour for me, but I did have at least one black representative of almost every fashion item - from hats to footwear. Not anymore! In addition to not purchasing black items, I’ve been editing black items out of my closet.

Though I still wear white, I haven’t added any white items this year either! I was considering white wide leg jeans, and white denim Bermuda shorts, but just didn’t ‘feel’ them.

If there’s been a colour theme for 2026, it’s been light blue and whisky brown, with navy as my main neutral. I feel this happens in phases. Exuberantly happy and I’m into bright colours. The pandemic and some deaths in the family and its black and navy blue. Feeling mellow so sky blue sky and woodsy brown.

Have you fallen out of love with any colours or into love with others?
