I think you'd look great in those Carey Mulligan cuts.
She was captivating in Far from the Madding Crowd. The casting was very good I thought.
I will have to check out some of her other movies.

Cheryl - I love that cut, so pretty. I'm learning that salt spray can be a pretty amazing little tool. I thought it was only for long beachy waves but it's also a great volumizer and terrific for adding general un-done-ness. Good luck today! Can't wait to see your pictures.

Robin: yes, my hair needs to be casual. It's so interesting, trying to find the right balance. I like a lot of tailored clothing (JCrew, etc.) but don't want the overall effect to be too buttoned-up, and keeping my hair in a sort of looser or more playful cut (as opposed to structured and dramatic) helps me achieve the desired look. There is definitely a casualness underneath it all.

Sally: I found a couple more pics of Carey Mulligan that suggest her cut could have a lot of versatility. Have you seen her in Never Let Me Go? (That was a terrific novel, too, by the way.) Keira Knightley is in it, too. Highly recommend. And Ms. Mulligan is married to Marcus Mumford, the gorgeous (and gorgeously-voiced lead singer of Mumford & Sons). They were pen pals as kids who met and fell in love. True story.

I definitely also like a casual style as opposed to structured. I am beginning to realize that a large part of my overall style is casual.

Sounds like we're on the same course Viva. This is the photo I'm bringing to my stylist today. I want it just a little longer as I don't have that beautiful neck...but I'm over flat ironing, and the "longer in front than in back" look.
I can do this look easy with a simple blow dry, and then some texture sea salt spray.

Actually in relooking at them I also love the Carey Mulligan cut, I was on my phone last night. You have some resemblances in style and look to her - she could be a good style icon.

I love her as an actress too - although she did appear in one of the most frustrating movies I have seen over the last couple of years - "Inside Llewyn Davies" ( I found this very disappointing and gloomy)......I loved her in "An Education", "Drive", "The Great Gatsby" and "Far from the Madding Crowd".

Thanks for the curling wand link, Angie. I will hold onto that. And I do love that picture of Kristen Stewart, but it feels to me like fussy, dressy hair, which I really don't want every day. :(

Jenava, that is exactly what I am going to do. My faves are #2 (the blonde) and 4 (the sideview shaggy bob). Will bring both and talk them through.

I love #4 (dark, side view, a short shag). If your hair is smooth and slightly wavy that could be very easy. I love the sleek with choppy at the end blond 'do, but without some coarseness that could end up looking very different on you.

Thanks all.

Interesting that Lisa and Angie like Kristen Stewart. I love her recent style, and her hair here is interesting but it does seem complex to do and to get to hold that way. I may try it today for fun, but I think a lot of spray will be involved (which I would not want EVER for daily use.)

Sharan, I like the front of your cut but not the hairline. I guess there are degrees of shagginess?

Robin/Tulle, I like the Carey Mulligan choppy bob too, especially if my stylist can use that as a departure point and -- to use Sally's words -- make it slightly more "undone."

My hair is badly behaved so I cannot achieve the news anchor look if I try.
I think you want
- a slightly "undone" or "natural" look
- are prepared to make some but not lots of effort
- don't want hair falling in your face

So you need it shorter at the front with some sort of fringe/bangs....and some layering and texturising.

My list of wants is much the same as yours but I have a strong cowlick so cannot have a full fringe/bangs.

Of your picks I think 5 could well end up falling in your face, and I would find this a challenge to style. I like it though. I can see 7 and 3 on you.

I love the shaggy mop in #7. Fun, easy, sexy. Have you ever worn your hair this way? I agree completely about the long, asymmetrical bang thing: it will fall in your face if your hair has any weight to it, and can easily look weird if you tuck it back absentmindedly. You're pretty close to #8 now, aren't you? I like that one, too. And sleek #2.

Thanks Angie. Your other suggestion (sort of extreme asymmetry) is more drama than I want and also has that in-your-face potential that won't work for me. But your comments here are so helpful. Thanks!

(Did you see my suggestion on your other thread?)

I like #5 best. Very easy to create with product and a curling wand.

I like #6 next. That will require some flat ironing and product.

#8 and #3 are adorable, but to get your hair to look like that daily is challenging.

I like the Kristen Stewart best but think it would be a lot of work.

Jenava's got my wheels turning. I have a hair cut and color in 2 weeks, and I am really wanting some kind of change. Here's a summary of where I am/what I am thinking.

- tried an asymmetrical cut this summer and did not like it (too 80s feeling, plus see next 2 points)
- absolutely do not like a big long bang in my face, which does not work for my job and looks stupid pinned back
- don't really like high-drama high-concept hair, really prefer hipster edge (if this is even a thing, haha)
- not sure I want to go super short but do like short cuts
- always have to fight the "news anchor" look because I am 50+ and have well-behaving hair
- color is actually pretty good, with lots of gold highlights from last color and the sun, although I may add lowlights as a way to start deepening color for winter months

Here is a recent picture of me.

I've narrowed the field of possibilities to three. Do you like any of these, or would you suggest something else?

Sleeker: Now just one sleek left (orig #2) Carey Mulligan -- I like this the best because there is some choppiness to it, and it has a clean neck.

I have removed Kristen Stewart (orig #5) because I really can't commit to a style that requires a curling iron, and I'm just not that good with tools -- although not bad with a straightener, and very good with product.

Shaggy: I've kept 2 shaggy looks (orig #6 Lisa Rinna and 7 unnamed model) which are possible but I think the last is the hardest because I don't have enough natural coarseness.
