Deciding to return something that's almost right but not completely right can be really hard. Good job with not settling! I have had to return items that couldn't be altered as well. It hurts, especially after you've already envisioned yourself wearing the item.

Too bad, but sounds like that was the right decision. I had a similar kimono I bought and tried several ways to make it work and considered hemming, but ended up returning. Sometimes a tweak can make a piece perfect but sometimes it is just too hard to make work.

Thanks cindysmith. I don’t have a need for a kimono as dressy as that one, or more dressy clothing. But I have a less dressy one I will wear soon. It is a much more useful item just not as special.

Those are hard decisions to make. Sorry this one didn't work out for you; but as I've learned from Angie, we just haven't found the perfect kimono for YOU yet. Hope your perfect kimono shows up soon!

Jane, Suz, rachylou, Toban, kkards, Angie, thanks for the support.

Suntiger, thanks for the scarf suggestion.

Bijou, that’s true. I rarely regret not buying something, but some of the items I was most on the fence about become workhorses, so I have trouble differentiating.

Jules, learning to admire the pattern and leave an item would be useful for me. You are correct that it is a relief to have made that decision. Shush, don’t tell anyone but I have a few more items with an as yet undecided future.

Isn’t it great to feel that kind of certainty in your clothing decisions? Well done.
Patterns are my downfall, so I’ve had to learn to admire them in items that just don’t work. At the same time when I see that the patterns I love are in style, I feel free to overdose - at my price point. Right now it’s PJ bottoms in all these botanical-inspired prints.

I have never regretted not buying something. Usually there was a very good reason for leaving it behind... However, I have regretted many inappropriate purchases. This is what I have to remind myself of when faced with these sorts of dilemmas. I think you made the right decision. Well done.

Such a beautiful kimono, but i just passed on one too that hardly got any wear in the nearly 15 years i owned it. The wide short sleeves make them impossible to layer over without bunching, so have a very short climate window. My solution, which could be yours too, is keep on the lookout for a scarf version!

I purchased a beautiful burnout kimono as a possibility for a dressy occasion. I didn't find the right dress to wear with it for that particular occasion. Now I have possibilities.

I've held onto it for a while as I loved the material but not the dropped sleeve. I had an epiphany this week. I could use my Nordstrom alterations credit to have it altered.

Sadly, today I was told that it couldn't be done. The alterations person liked it the way it was. I did not. I looked at it in the dressing room for a while, then wandered around the store while I pondered whether to return it or to take it back home to try it on with the items I thought it could work with. After a while, I heard Angie's voice.

"NEXT!"

So I walked over to the counter and returned it. I'm still a little sad.
Goodbye beautiful material almost right kimono jacket.
