All sound viable, white and cream can look good together. Difficult to say though without seeing. Denim jackets are always a safe option if you don't want to look too dressed up. I was wondering if you had one. I have a very light white one that works in summer. The black rayon sounds nice. Wear the one you will feel your best in is my best advice :). If you feel like it post some pics. I think the black or the denim will be perfect. Denim more casual, black more elevated.

Lise, I don't have a lot of summer jackets. It's very casual in our 55-plus community, and I tend to "run hot" more often than not. LOL That said, I have, from last season, a Jones NY white tissue linen "jean jacket," for lack of a better word -- sits at waist with jean jacket details. But white won't work with the black/cream polo, and the linen is ultra sheer, so the zigzag pattern would show through. Also have a J Jill basic silky black rayon topper that fits like a loose cardi (no buttons; no trim of any kind); hem ends mid thigh.Also...is black on black on black too much black? I don't want to be too dressed up. I also have a fitted blue denim "jean jacket" by Mavi. All of these are from 2024.

These are all for evening. I agree about all black head to toe being too heavy for day. I will prob just wear shorts for day touring.

Black will work perfect.y especially at night. I like casual cotton jackets in summer. I also have a linen blazer . What summer jackets do you have? How dressy do you want to be? In the day time In warmer weather I find head to toe black too heavy. This is a personal thing. I think any third colour could work. Also light denim. Then again you probably won't need a day jacket....

I have very light weight long button-less cardi/dusters that are good for this purpose too. Ones that are floaty not frumpy IYKWIM..

Thank you again, everyone! I ordered the VC vest. They only have it in small; I hope it's not too big. I fear XXS would be too small.

Lise: what kind of jacket would work over those pants? What color/fabric/cut/length...? Solid Black?

I like the pants. Not dated at all. Will look fab with the cardi buttoned as a top. Love the black sweater vest also to wear buttoned, also fab with the black pants. I like the Pearl sandals and the last sneakers. I also like the other sandals but if they not as comfortable leave them at home. Probably a light jacket might be necessary for night?

Sounds like a great time to be in Newport. Schools will be back in session so it will be less crowded and easier to get around. Assuming you’re touring the mansions- imo super casual and so what ever you wear is the right thing. Same goes for the Cliff Walk, when we did it there was a mix of every day street clothes, athletic wear, & hiking gear. Found the same thing at the places we went for dinner. Since it’s a tourist spot imo almost anything goes

Thank you so very much, all! So grateful for your thoughtful feedback! <3

Angie: Your suggestion to start with the shoes makes perfect sense. However, suffice it to say that these are not exactly fun/trendy athletic shoes (see attached). I have two pairs of white trainers, the one (which needs to be washed!) is the more comfortable. The RYKAs, which are my court shoes, might be ok, though I’ve never worn them for anything but court play. I do have a casual Taos sandal which I can wear as long as there’s not a lot of walking involved.

Kkards: I will be there around Sept. 6, which is, in effect still summer, weather-wise.

Liz: It will be just a little getaway with sightseeing and outdoor activities, weather permitting! I would love to be able to mostly wear what I have, but am willing to purchase a piece or two if necessary.

Lise: Do you think the black pants look dated? Or could I wear the crocheted polo with them?

Carol: I love the Keds you posted; unfortunately, I can't wear Keds if I'm planning to walk any distance without pain. My feet are hard to fit and generally unhappy if I don’t totally cater to them. LOL! Do you think the vest (if it's still available) would work with the black pants? Or, again, are the pants from last summer too dated?

I presume the metallic sandals with the faux pearls in my first post are just a "no" ....

I looked up Newport, and I guess it has a sailing history. So I love that VC vest with its bright buttons--so smart. I would consider if there are maybe a pair of sneakers you could get that are comfortable but fashion-forward. I think Keds would be great in a beach town, or maybe something metallic if you were also wearing it at night.

I think layering will be key, in the fall it starts to get colder at night the farther you go in the northeast. I also second the suggestion to build outfits around shoes. Last time I was in RI I did a lot of walking touring the historical homes.

My information for Newport comes from The Gilded Age, so I'd recommend a bustled skirt, gloves, a decorated hat, and a parasol to protect your skin from the wretched sun . Hair should be curled and twisted into an elaborate undo and go easy on the jewellery. You need to signify social status but not in an ostentatious way. ;).

A couple of questions. When in September will you be there? I think the weather at Labor Day would be different from the weather in September almost October, although after this spring, I’m no longer sure thst the calendar/seasons mean much. What will you be doing when you’re there? I was there Mother’s Day weekend 2 or 3 years ago, i found it pretty casual, at least for the places we went,

I always bring a lightweight shawl/scarf that I can throw over my shoulders and or wrap up , especially when traveling during the transition months.

I was in Newport a few weeks ago, and indoor air conditioning everywhere we went was brutal. Anywhere along the water got chilly, too. I run cold these days, but I’d suggest planning on layering if possible. As for trainers, everyone wears them so no worries.

What to wear (age 65-plus) for September long weekend in Newport. Pear body type, 5'4". Feet don't function in anything but cross trainers. I've got widish leg black pull-ons (crinkly rayon-ish fabric; GAP 2024). Thinking of purchasing VC black sleeveless buttonup sweater vest if I can get it in black to pair with the pants. Not sure if it will be flattering though. For another night, I've got black/ivory open crochet short sleeve button up cardi. Do I wear it buttoned? Partially buttoned? Open? Will neckline look weird unbuttoned because of the collar? What to wear over it if it's chilly at night? Also have gold metallic sandals with pearl accents. Will all these work for two nights? And what to wear by day? Shorts and tees? How to update basic stone-colored cotton shorts? Also have very baggy knee length washed denim shorts... Tops for these? TIA!!!!
