I think you should go slowly and perhaps not invest in the really expensive pieces right off the bat. One thing not to forget is how messy life can be at home, and on a ranch I imagine, and think about if you'll wear some of the things you love with a more casual pant without worrying about destroying it.

Interesting questions Celia. I was very comfortable with my corporate look and I miss it. There may have been a level of confidence I had with suits and heels that I am looking for in my new life.

Welcome!
Now that you are in a diferent stage of your life is there any specific item that don't want to wear because you are so tired of it?
On the other hand, is there something you would like to try?

Thanks everyone for the advise. Suz I agree, MOTG is my favorite for inspiration. I am still learning how to navigate this website and also love looking at forum

Well, this is sort of in the opposite direction ... but I'd say *do* save one or two of those professional suits. You know, you think you're done but then some occasion comes up where a suit would be handy. They're pretty versatile.

Welcome to the 60+ group of YLFers, colleenmarie. I'm 63 and like to think of myself as semi-retired; my "retirement", such as it was, lasted only a couple of months until I got called back into action, but at a less demanding pace.

I know how challenging it is to morph from professional dress (which now occupies a much smaller segment of my life) to a more casual style. In my case, I also chose to make some lifestyle changes that resulted in my losing a sizable amount of excess weight. Those two changes, coupled with the inevitable changes that happen as your body ages, resulted in my having to start re-building a wardrobe from scratch. It has been fun but also terrifying at times.

Suz's suggestion to look at the MOTG formulas is a good start. The formulas were lifesaver once I figured out how to tweak them to make them fit my age and lifestyle. I also found Angie's thoughts on how she constructs her outfits to be valuable; you can find them in the Archives under Angie's Outfits.

To be honest, though, I get most of my inspiration from looking at the wide variety of outfits that the forum members post on the forum and the discussions and tips that I've gleaned from Angie and the forum members. The forum is an incredibly supportive place with a wide range of ages, interests, occupations, and styles. Post a question like "what kind of footwear works on a ranch" and you'll get dozens of opinions; we are a highly diverse group who love to share our opinions about what we like, what works for us, and everything in between!

Hi Collenmarie !! Welcome ! Congrats on your retirement. That is an adjustment. I went through the same thing with clothes when I quit my corporate job to be with my children.
What did you like to wear on your days off before you retired ? Are you a jeans person ? What kind of things are you going to be doing ? Do you like boots or super comfy "skimmers" ?

Personally, I have gotten to the point where I can't live without a black ponte pant, a pair of jeans, and one colored pants ( no matter what season it is ) some sort of blouse and camis or demi camis . I also love ponte knit skirts and tights for the ease and washability. I am not a dressy person. Someone like Marly has a great laid back casual style torqued up....

I have to third Suz's suggestions of MOTG ( mother on the go ) which is really super fab casual on the go.

Welcome!!

If you've been here a while, you've probably seen us recommend Angie's MOTG formulas. But I'm going to recommend them again - they are very helpful places to start! You don't have to be a mom to benefit from these.

Not only that, but her outfit in today's blog post might serve as yet another inspiration.
And her client, Karen, dresses in a wonderfully put together way that doesn't involve high heels!

I guess its time I posted after reading for six months or so. At my age 60 I may be one of the oldest I like to say I'm shaped like a goblet of fine wine, large on top and fairly nice long legs. I live on a ranch in Northern California and my style is casual western outdoors with a wannabe Ralph Lauren look.. My challenge is to look chic and put together. Please help, as a recently retired professional living in suits and heels I now have the task of building a new casual wardrobe. I would live to hear any ideas
