So glad for the pics~ See, this changes everything! You have lovely, wider shoulders, a narrower torso but defined bust, and a defined waist. This makes you look more like a slender hourglass to me. Now, I have a booty that I keep, well, behind me in most photos -- perhaps you don't like to accentuate that part, and it makes you feel like a pear?

I've come to realize that I've always been an hourglass in frame -- my shoulders are squared, and roughly the visual width of my hips. However, my weight distribution made me look more like a pear in my 20's, an hourglass in my late 30s (pregnancy boobs that never went away), and a fuller hourglass, secondary apple since hitting 50 (I now store my estrogen in my waist, not my ovaries, lol).

I'd encourage you to play up that defined waist, and use a clear, strong shoulder structure in your clothing to make the most of shoulders, as a way of making you feel like your hip curve looks great, not pronounced.

(You also have beautiful large eyes, a lovely smile and wonderful, moderate to high contrast coloring. So glad you've come to have fun with style. The forum members have been such a help to me, and I've met several of them IRL, including Angie, over the past 5 years.

Great point, Beth Ann. It's what I'm working toward. I feel fashion rules are really guidelines, not laws. It's just fun for me after 35+ years of focusing on everyone else to focus a little on me. Here are my pictures. I didn't know if it was easier to tell with a cami or turtleneck, so I took both.

Welcome, Liz! I'd encourage you to give some thought to the elements you'd like to highlight, and the colors, shapes, and outfit formulas that make you happy and excited to get dressed in the morning. I think these are as important to good style as conventional figure flattery!

Ditto what Liz said. You'll see lots of discussions about this on the forum. Measurements provide some information, but don't define your shape. If you have a very round bottom, for example, it may stick out more in back and not create the impression of broader hips to narrower waist and shoulders that the measurements suggest. Or you might look in the mirror and say, yup, definitely what I see is pear. It sounds like you probably are a pear, but a slim one, so you have thinner legs to show off along with a beautiful waist.

I'd suggest doing a visual check -- not measurements -- to be sure you are a pear. Body shape is about visual silhouette of your frame. Are your hips/bottom half visually larger than your shoulders (not your chest measurement)? That's the hallmark of a pear. You can post a photo here of yourself in close-fitting dark clothing, arms down at your sides, full silhouette, if you want feedback.

And then, if your shoulders are narrower than your hips, is it a large visual difference that you want to compensate for through your clothing silhouettes, or is it a slight difference?

Welcome to the forum!!

There are lots of articles about how to dress for different body shapes, some of the pear guidelines may apply and some of the rectangle or hourglass.

We are a friendly bunch here and always willing to help.

Welcome, Liz. I am a rectangle now but was once a pear with very thin legs and thighs. I think you should read all the suggestions for the pear shape but you may need to experiment and make some observations as to what works best for you. I was slow to learn that skirts and dresses that had any fullness made my legs just look thinner. You can wear your skirts short, especially with your narrow thighs. Try 60's style mod dresses or others with a straight silhouette and pencil skirts.
Figure out where your waist is and look at your shoulder line. Those things make a difference. Most of all have fun with the journey and break the "rules" sometimes.

I found this forum trying to figure out my body type. I'm 5'7", 130 pounds. My measurements are 34-28-39 which I thinks makes me a pear. My hang up is I have very thin legs, including my thighs. It is my understanding that the pear shape has thick hips and thighs. Should I still follow the pear fashion guidelines?
