I have done both but I think the puffer is a better choice for keeping you toasty as you walk around!

I'd vote for the puffer. It will keep you nice and cozy. Plus, many puffers are washable while a wool coat will need to be dry cleaned. After running around the city you're going to want to wash your coat!

I live right out of NYC and beginning December - when temps fall below 34 - I break out my long puffer coat. Around New Years can be awfully cold, especially if you spend some time outdoors, when I used to commute to the city, I wore puffer for the whole winter season, even subway stations are freezing then (but trains are heated, of course). Especially if you're coming from a warmer climate, definitely a puffer...

I vote for a puffer, especially if you are not accustomed to temperatures below 30's.
New year's weather is generally brutally cold. Don't forget a hat, scarf and gloves...:)

I'm in the same boat. I've got a beautiful long wool camel coat, but I've been debating buying a puffer for awhile now. But, I've got so many other items to buy--all equally important--and my budget is not limitless. That said, I love the look of a short puffer coat and think it is much more versatile than a long wool coat. Just be sure it flatters you!

I usually don't break out the puffer until it's below freezing. No way to tell until the weather report is up. It also depends how hot or cold you run, and where you're coming from.

They can both be fab if they fit well and flatter your body shape. In this case, I'd suggest going with whichever will keep you more comfortable. Will you be outside a lot?

Hitting NYC 12/28: brrrr, cold! I have the basic black wool very long coat. Should I stick with that OR be FAB like Angie and buy a puffer coat??? Which is MORE fab?
