this day my work horses are: skinny dark wash jeans, loose fit boyfriend ripped jeans, burgundy skinny jeans/pants, maxi skirt in grey marl and ocassionaly oatmeal color pencil skirt.
Everything else rotates around these bottoms, and I am in serious need to update my tops from tees to shirts, shirt-like tops and blouses :)
I almost forgot my two pairs of simple, minimal stud earrings, they both get a lot of wear, with any outfit.

Winter - my black booties. Burgandy skinnies

I have a fairly small work wardrobe so lots of workhorses there - grey suit. several dresses, striped tube skirt. Some cross over to casual as well, so get plenty of wear.

A black bottom, be it pants or a skirt. I build the rest of the outfit around either the black pants or black skirt. I get a tremendous amount of wear out of these pieces. My work wardrobe would fall apart without them.

I'd like to help but I don't post outfit pictures. No camera and if I make the mistake of having hubby take a picture of me well, it's like a friend said who has gorgeous sporty style and has lived all over the world as an army wife, raising five kids, so can cope with anything: Oh no! I would never allow THAT.

hmm maybe my answers would be useful as what NOT to wear.
My wardrobe is very different winter to summer. Today I am wearing two of my workhorses - I don't work outside the home. Black background hawaiian shirt with medium large buff yellow flowers with some light cocoa brown and light sage green foliage. Paired with cotton sateen leopard pencil skirt. Favorite easy for fussy feet sandals: formed hard sole with 2 1/2 " height but also
1" front platform. Securely strapped below ankle and one band across toes. Have these in black with small tan X's stitched across front band and in medium caramel brown with same X's.

Why: I am just a Hawaiian shirt gal. My maternity wear over a quarter century ago was Hawaiian maternity shirts. This was before Big Lebowsky but it's a favorite movie of mine. The Dude abides. So, I like florals in various incarnations and I like the dappled quality of leopard and I like to mix prints.
The leopard skirt gets a ton of wear with both prints and solids and I have 4 Hawaiian shirts so that genre gets lots of wear.

My other summer staple is a thin chiffon overlayer print skirt. I usually like geometrics or abstract geometrics.

I have jeans for emergency fitting-in situations :D but don't own a jean skirt, chambray shirt or denim jacket.

I like that the sandals have a tailored element. I love anything with top or saddle stitching. I love the look of thin, elegant strappy sandals on other folks but they just show up that my own feet are not thin nor elegant. So I like more substance to my sandals.

ETA: although I have florals in various styles, I prefer a masculine cut garment with the feminine, lush print. Also, answering your question made me realize that I have 2 distinct styles or silhouettes. In some cases, I like some movement to my clothing - usually in skirt area or at bottom of pants leg (fluidity) but in other cases I like stillness and an emphatic element in my clothing - got everything nailed down. :D

Where I live, the dominant season is summer. There are mild winters and too short springs.

Fall & Winter: black skinnies, jeans, trench coats, tall boots, ankle booties, olive military jacket.

Oh, if I lived in a cold climate, my tall, leather boots (flats) would be on my feet every day!! Even if it is not so much a look of the moment, I would wear those skinny jeans (or leggings) and boots until someone pried them off of me. Sounds dramatic, I know, but I live in Florida... so I have been deprived of some serious boot time over these past seasons when the look was raging.

Nude shoes. I love them every season, and have them in all different styles, but my current favorites are my Nine West, ankle strap pumps. I feel like they lengthen the leg line with dresses, and also love the ankle straps with cropped pants this season. Those are my biggest work and church staple at the moment. My biggest casual go to are my skinny jeans. I also am loving BF jeans this season, but my skinnies are what I can't seem to live without.

Welcome, Quietgirl! I've been enjoying your comments on the Forum. My best workhorses are basics such as great- fitting jeans, black ankle boots, and a trench coat. When I put any of these on, I feel fab. I find myself turning to them several times a week (the coat not so much, since it's getting warmer), quickly bringing the cost per wear down to mere dollars or even cents.

Things that I reach for consistently, year round, include jeans (blue, white and black), sweaters, boots and interesting bags.

If I add black pants, nice knit tops, some other styles of shoes, and a couple of toppers, I could basically get dressed every day.

I like to have a few dresses and skirts, but In general I don't consider them to be workhorse pieces.

Right now I'm in the middle of building my wardrobe and my style (still figuring things out), so I don't have a lot of workhorses, since I keep changing things up. Right now, in general, I keep reaching for a lightweight multicolored scarf from Target (I call it my confetti scarf, because it has lots of "bits" of color and goes with almost every outfit), my white tanks from BR (as layers), and lightweight cardigans (as toppers). Quite unimaginative, I suppose!

...and I never said why! Well....I guess they're easy and comfy to wear, fit my fairly casual lifestyle well, I always feel good in them and I feel like ME, if that makes sense. They're the foundation that makes a bit of added whimsy work.

I think this is too broad a question to know how to answer helpfully. My quick answer is: Gap berry Sunkissed shorts. But I'm living a casual life, currently in a hot climate, where I don't need work clothing. I'm sure if you are an office worker in a temperate climate my workhorse doesn't do you much good. Or even if you don't wear shorts shorter than 4" inseam, for that matter.

Hi quietgirl! My absolute boil it down to the bare minimum workhorses....jeans, my wide belt, boots or ballet(ish) flats, fluid tops. And a scarf or two 'cos I love them. I could add other things, but these are the real honest wear to death items.

I guess it depends ... for the summer, I reach for my Clarks wedges all the time, and in the winter, I wear tall leather boots... I have a large assortment of leather belts from Anthropologie that get regular wear ... and I have a fabulous jean jacket ... tons of loves in my closet! Are you thinking of anything specific?

So, quietgirl, are you looking for specifics like brand, fabric types etc. or more general, like sandals, jeans, shorts, blouses, sweaters? What season(s) and occasions are you trying to cover? It's hard to narrow it down otherwise. I'll start general-ish. Regardless of season, for work (or dressier) occasions, I lean on the safe silk button down blouse. Most of mine are either Vince Camuto or White House Black Market. They can be covered in the cooler months with a topper, and aren't too hot in my warm office building. They drape wonderfully and come in fun colors and patterns, and can be dressed up or down. I keep my ancient favorite pair of black patent pointy toe Prada pumps under my desk, so even if I'm wearing sandals, I can switch for meetings etc.
