Anne, I love your idea of wearing a dress one day a week. I love dresses and am slowly collecting a few comfy casual ones but I just need to get into the habit of wearing them. Count me in!

I have had a few summer resolutions
* to wear a dress at least one weekday a week, and a skirt on another
*not to buy any T shirts

My style resolutions for the year are to concentrate on hair, glasses and accessories, especially shoes.

I have done a lot of shopping this last year and YLF has contributed to that although post baby years tend to be bigger years for me anyway. Since I am getting more exposure to new styles I have to be careful to not just buy a new style to have it, but work out if that garment is necessary.

I want to work more on looking nice everyday, not just when going out.

Like a few others, I'd like to lose some weight, at least 2 pounds to get back to my pre preggy weight, ideally about 5 to get to the bottom end of my normal weight variation (I always conceive at the top end).

And vaguely related, I'd like to make it to the end of a long swim event coming up soon and do a 10K fun run under an hour (which modest ambition will show the serious joggers among you just how slow I am now).

You're right tarzy, they have served me well. Tell you what being a student again has really made me realise how frivolous I was regarding shopping beforehand. I used to have items hanging up with tags still on that'd never been worn. Actually that should be resolution #8 for me. Only buy things I love and will get a lot of wear out of. No more closet orphans!!!

I hear you on the quality vs quantity. But $500 for a belt!?! That's nuts!!!

Tam - it sounds like you have gotten good value from many of your clothes, and it's now time to replace some things! I hope you can treat yourself to some fab items in the new year.

One of my resolutions is to buy less quantity, but better quality. I am looking for a nice red belt, and I came across this one. What do you think? (IN MY DREAMS! SIGH.)

Tanya this is a great topic. I have really enjoyed reading everyone's answers.

My goals for this year fashion/shopping wise are largely related to the fact that I'm starting work (in 12 days eek!) and need some more workwear and other basic wardrobe item replacements for things that have been kicking around in my wardrobe since before I started studying 4 years ago and have been hanging out till I started working again to replace.

My goals are:

1) Replace basic wardrobe items that desperately need it. Things that are at the top of my list to buy/replace are winter items so I have a few months lee-way before having to get started on these. They are:

     - Flat-soled knee-high black boots - the zip on my current ones is breaking. Each time I zip them up they come apart a bit more and I worry it may be the last time I get to wear them. I think they are synthetic because the "leather" at the top of the boots is looking very worn too. They have served me well for at least 6-7 years though, so the time for replacement has well and truly come.

      - Beige knee-high boots - I had to throw mine out during winter when the inner and outer sole finally wore through and water was leaking into my foot. Again they have lasted me ~6 years & I got a lot of good wear out of them before saying goodbye.

2) Find the perfect pair of skinnies that I can wear under the new boots come winter.

3) Only buy workwear items that I love and think represent my personality. I think that the reason I avoided basic business shirts etc all these years was because I thought they were conservative, uncomfortable and frumpy. Playing around with vests and layering this year has shown me they can look smart and fun at the same time. Since I'll be spending 60 hours a week wearing these clothes I want to like them and feel good in them.

4) Invest in a leather jacket. Since I ride a Vespa this is really a need as well as a want. Leather offers a lot more protection than the denim jackets or puffer coat I wear at the moment. Seeing some fab leather jackets on you guys has made me realise that spending all the $$ on this can actually look good as well as be functional on the bike. I have always thought of leather jackets as being masculine and taking me back to my heavy-metal, grungey days. I'm excited to find out it doesn't have to be that way!

5) Not settle for things that aren't perfect. PPL is a major culprit in my wardrobe in this respect. If they don't make them long enough, I cannot buy them!

6) Find a pair of comfy and nice looking sandals and flats so I don't have to wear my birkies every single day :)

7) Go through my wardrobe and clear out things that aren't 100% or I don't love. Items I haven't worn for 2 years would be a great place to start.

I stopped to make new year's resolutions a few years back. I just do what I feel like is the right thing and tend to come up with resolutions all year long. :)

However, here's my rules regarding fashion/shopping currently:

1. For basic items, I'd keep replacing them with high quality ones when they worn out. This would improve my whole wardrobe in the long run;
2. I'd keep reading Angie's posts and other fashion websites to find new items that interests me, and add a few that fit my style and look good on me;
3. I can't promise to stop recreational shopping but I'll do my best to reduce it. I really should stop shopping online because I return about 50% of them!
4. Never, ever buy non-petite sizes clothes online any more, I've learned my lessons so many times in the past. :)
5. Swapping clothes with fashionable friends. I'm planning to host a party in January. I hope it'll be fun!

Laura, I completely agree. A while back I wanted to start looking for more vintage stores and consignment shops, but I never got around to looking because I was so busy with school. Now that I'm out I would like to do more "recycling" with clothes.

My goals are similar to the rest of y'alls.
1. Spend less over all
2. Buy fewer nicer things (less is more) once I lose these last 10 pounds
3. Don't buy something just because it's cheap
4. Eliminate wardrobe orphans via donation or find pieces to go with them
5. Focus more on accessories and shoes to make the pieces I do have fabulous

One other thought, and then I am off to make breakfast :)

I really feel that we (as a whole nation) are headed back to something more simple. The rampant consumerism of past decades isn't sustainable. Did anyone ever read Simple Abundance back in the day? Something along those lines. And it feels right at this point re-use, recycle, re-purpose the things we already have - and it requires creativity, which makes it fun too.

That's my general resolution for 2009 - to get back to those principles. Okay, I'm off my soapbox now and on to breakfast!

Well, my other goal this year is to lose weight so giving up shopping isn't really an option. :)

That said, I do have goals as it relates to my wardrobe as I lose weight:
1. Get my pants tailored or buy new ones as I go down in sizes. Having done this before in my life, I know that pants are where I see the real changes. Wearing baggy pants only makes you look heavier, so getting new ones as I drop in size is a big motivator for me. I use pants-shopping as a celebratory reward in my weight-loss journey.
2. Pull out all the shirts that have become too snug and bring them back into rotation as the weight falls off. I have several I am really looking forward to wearing again!
3. Try on new styles as I get closer to goal weight! There are certain trends that do not look good on me right now, but I am curious to see if they will look good -- or if I can find them in my new size -- later this year. Skinny jeans and more dresses being the first two I want to try...

Best of all, with a smaller size I will be able to hold out for sales longer, and will be able to shop at more actual stores instead of ordering online. I am really looking forward to THAT!

Great question!

1) Get back on the exercise bandwagon - because if I don't, then the wardrobe I've built up will stop fitting. :-(

2) Cut my clothing budget in half, to make room for the inevitable car payment that is likely going to be needed. The car was supposed to last two more years, but we are being told it is "terminal" - though they can't predict when it will fail. I would much rather spend on clothes than a car... but oh well. It's not likely I will get a raise or bonus this year either, and something's got to give.

3) Try to hold out longer for sales. I have long been conditioned to never wait for sales, because if I do, my size is usually long gone. I think this may be changing this year. But, maybe not... I have a sneaking suspicion that in a downturn petite options will be one of the first things to disappear. We shall see! Either way, I'll continue my "shop with a list and keep the coupons organized" strategy that has been working well in recent months.

4) Hold on to receipts, don't take tags off until I'm sure, and don't procrastinate or dither or get anxious about returning things that just don't work out. I really hate returning things, especially in person; it makes me uncomfortable. I don't think I'm the only one that feels this way. But my girls are now taller than me and a size larger so I can't get away with pawning my caste-offs on them anymore!

5) Don't buy more clothes than can fit on my hangers, in my drawers, in my shoe racks, and in our storage bins. I actually have a few extra hangers at the moment, which is kinda nice.

6) Less recreational shopping; I tend to do better when I shop alone on a mission with a specific quest in mind. This is about sticking to a list. Lists help you be more discerning, I think. But, there will probably always be room for those unexpected finds. (I will just keep the tags on until I'm 100% sure it's really a keeper).

7) Continue trying to see how many outfits I can make out of the clothes I already own. But also rotate outfits I already know work. The latter requires me keeping track.... if I didn't, I wouldn't remember them! I have already started putting last year's late-winter/early spring clothes into an online photo album so I can remember. This is also good to have to help me remember what I already own that may be tucked away in storage, so I don't accidentally buy duplicate items (been known to do that...)

Such a good thread, Tanya!

I'm on a shopping restriction until June. I'll be leaving my current workplace in June, and will be looking for another job. I have what I need to get through winter at work and in interviews, and if I can save my clothing allowance until my contract ends, I'll have a larger amount to work with if I need to update my wardrobe for a new job. I'm allowing myself to buy necessary things - for instance, I will definitely need a new bra or two - but I'm laying off on purchases I can wait on. I think it will be wise - who knows - six month's allowance could pay for a month of rent if I can't find a job!

I have been thinking about this a lot lately!

1. Buy less, but of better quality. This is so much easier said than done.

2. Shop with a list and a plan. I feel I buy too many things that don't work with other things I have. I need a master plan!

3. Experiment more, yet also stay true to my own personal style. This is very challenging. I want to develop more of a signature look, but don't want to get into a rut.

4. Learn what fits! How does one do this?

5. FIND A PAIR OF JEANS THAT FITS!!!!

1) Spend less overall. I know quality matters, but I think I need to be more of a bargain shopper. I am not at a point in my life where getting investment pieces is really a practical anyway (not that I get any now).

2) Only buy things that are absolutely perfect for me, or will be perfect with a simple alteration.

3) Buy more dresses. I look best in dresses and it's a pity I have so few. They are also the most comfortable option in summer, and the easiest as well. I don't like to fuss around with clothes as much in summer.

4) Try to experiment more with accessories. I can change up a tired outfit quite a bit if I just had more accessories.

5) Give my closet a thorough cleanout and try and organize it better

love this topic, as it's something i've been thinking about a lot lately! for the new year i am actually embarking on a year of non-shopping - that is, exclusively thrifting my way through the year. i have a small budget per week that rolls over if i don't use it, and at the end of the year whatever i have not spent will go to a fund for breast cancer research, a cause very personal to me. it's very difficult for me, but i do love thrift shopping so - maybe it won't be that bad!

Great topic, Tanya. I am joining you in your resolution to buy fewer things but of higher quality.

The builder who did our house had a saying: "The high price of low quality." It really rings true when sweaters pill after a few wearings, or the like. If you spent $30 on it and thought it a bargain, it isn't when it goes in the trash. You'd be better off saving your money until you can afford something better quality.

I learned this lesson from YLF this fall when I was able to resurrect my 10-year-old Burberry kilt and turn it into a killer outfit. The original purchase price was so worth it in the long run!

Hmmm I'll have to give this some thought.

Off the top of my head, I could use another closet sweep.

I am going to try to buy more investment pieces and buy things I love regardless of the price, and not buy things I don't love just because they are inexxpensive.

What a great topic! My fashion resolutions are somewhat focused around the fact that I'm working on losing weight.

1) Invest in shoes, bags, belts, and other accessories, especially in colours (I like red, yellow, blue/turquoise, purple, pewter, and bronze). These will still fit me no matter what I weigh.

2) Make a concerted effort to wear everything in my closet, and to wear those things in new ways.

3) I have a small ($50) discretionary budget for each month and I will stick to that. Money I earn from consigning clothes or from "extras" (IE payments for poems published in literary journals) can also be used for clothes/accessories.

4) I have an OK basic wardrobe, but if I find I really need/want a piece of clothing, get something inexpensive that still looks good, since hopefully it will be too big in a few months. The three things I can see myself possibly purchasing are a denim pencil skirt, a pair of higher rise skinnies, and a white button-down. If I get these, it'll either be from Old Navy, H&M, Winners, consignment, thrift, or a super huge sale.

5) Get everything out of my incredibly tiny closet that I don't like or don't wear.

A great topic and I eagerly await Angie's blog on the subject. I feel I have enough clothes so hope to discipline myself to get one or two great quality pieces that I feel fab wearing. Pants that fit or can be made to fit well are at the top of the list.
Another resolution is pay more attention to what colors are best on me and stick to those. It wasn't easy as many of the popular colors this fall/winter were just ok or awful but I settled instead of holding out

What a great topic, Tanya!

1. My big goal for this year is to try and get more accessories. Those sort of get left to the bottom of my pile (especially shoes). My black Me Toos are completely worn out because I wore them everyday to school for the past 16 weeks. So, finding comfortable, stylish shoes that can take 8+ hour walking days is top of my list. In order to accomplish this, I will have to spend less on regular "clothing," which is hard for me because I hate shoe shopping, but love looking for blouses.

2. My second goal is to get my head around summer dressing! I need to figure out a way to stay at least somewhat cool and comfortable during the hot summer months here, while at the same time staying at least partially covered up (no short shorts or tank tops!). I think dresses and skirts are the way to go, so I will be spending a majority of my allowance on cotton dresses that I can machine wash. I might have to accept that some summer items will only last me one year. My white J. Crew summer shorts are on their last leg, despite me only picking them up last July. I want to replace my clamdiggers with ones that don't leave blue ink all over everything. But I'm mostly going to stick to dresses and skirts.

3. Buy some decent sunglasses! There's really no excuse not to have them where I live.

I thought it might be fun, considering that most of us have had our first year with the YLF, to say what our fashion and shopping strategies in the next year will be.

Here are mine. The first three are quite connected.

1. I have decided to seriously cut down on my shopping, due to many different factors. I have a lot of clothing, and it is very rare that I actually need something, there are just things that I want. So I am setting myself a fairly small monthly budget and that's it. The only exception is money earned from consigning my old clothes, and maybe a smaller part of my tax refund.

2. Within that budget, I will try to buy less items but of greater quality, and wear them more often. I actually plan to do something which Angie advised at some point, which is to get one beautiful investment item every season and wear it a lot.

3. And I shall only buy things if they are absolutely perfect ( or can be made so with a small alteration). The Gap micro check pants really made me learn my lesson, especially after I found those COHs.

4. I will try to buy more blouses, but the kind that I can actually wear to work ( no shiny silk). Small accessories ( necklaces, belts, scarves) are another area in which I could improve my current collection.

Your turn now!
