YAY!!! And I know exactly what you mean about those bins. They are a mysterious pain ("What's in that one, again?")

My brief rule: if you can't see it, you must label it.

Angie, thanks! Yes, I'm feeling very refreshed for the new year and motivated to keep things tidy.

The other thing that I notice is that my new wardrobes aren't crammed full, but nor is there a ton of space left over. I don't feel like I need to do a super strict one-in-one-out but my wardrobe feels like it is about the right size currently, so I think these "containers" will provide a useful guide rail in terms of maintaining wardrobe size.

Congratulations on a great transition! We have matching closets! (Mine is also Pax with white doors.) I especially love the last sweater - the neckline looks great on you, and I am with you on warm!

bonnie, ack, just a hanging rod with no doors! I have had some hare-brained house ideas in my time (see: photo #1) but even to me that sounds inadvisable.

Anyway, yes, I think a PAX closet could be a good solution for you. My husband did most of the putting together, I think if your husband has experience with other IKEA furniture he could absolutely ace the assembly.

Keeping in mind that I am still in the honeymoon phase with our new wardrobes, I would say that the shelves for shoes are working really well. I think the shoe shelves are metal, while the regular shelves are laminate/particleboard. My shoes generally stay on the rack by the entry door overnight before being put away, so I'm not usually putting wet/dirty shoes in the cabinet if that makes sense. The advantage of the regular shelves is that they are cheaper than the shoe shelves (I have a lot of shoes!) and I think more flexible in terms of configuration. My husband has a pullout shoe shelf at the bottom of his large cabinet and he likes it, but I think it's not super space efficient (have I mentioned that I have a lot of shoes?).

I really recommend IKEA's online wardrobe planner. It will help you place things so that drawers for example do not conflict with door hinges (that's why I have a basket and tray in my cabinet instead of all drawers). And you can try out different options/configurations.

Happy to answer any more questions. Good luck!

I am really interested to see your closet. I moved in December to a house without a master bedroom closet. The previous owner had it taken out and had an open closet with no doors just poles to hang clothing. DH says he can put in a PAX closet because he has lots of experience with Billy bookcases. Did you put it together yourself? I notice you used shelves for shoes rather than the shoe shelves. How are they working for you? The drawers look really nice and useful. Thanks so much for sharing this. We live about 200+ miles from an IKEA, and it's hard to make decisions without actually seeing the product up close.

Thanks all! I just knew this was the sort of place that would appreciate a good closet makeover. :-)

Bijou, ha, my shoes as soon-to-be-coddled shelter dogs. That rings true!

Mainelady, what a great idea to plan two tops at a time for each bottom. I'm going to try something like that.

Sterling, yes I agree, taking the time to KonMari fold is sooooo worth it! Oh gosh, it must have been a couple of weeks of wardrobe chaos. Too long! But now it's all receding into the dimness of memory....

torontogirl, your simple outfits with subtle but spot-on details are actually a great model for me for my work from home wear. Please post lots of WIWs in 2019!

nemosmom, please share how your quest for a work-from-home uniform goes!

Suz, you are SO RIGHT about outfit planning being a period of creative reflection. I carve out time and focus to accomplish other creative things -- why should this be any different? Thank you for this excellent way of framing it.

karen isn't the sweater divine? I feel that the picture doesn't do it justice, it's really great in motion. It's made by Demylee for Scoop (I'm not too familiar with either of those brands) -- I found it on Ebay. Lucky score!

JAileen I'm lol-ing at "porn for women." Like that Ryan Gosling "hey girl" meme.

And thanks Runcarla, Janet, Jenni, rachylou, Style Fan, Jane, cindysmith, Canada, and Cardiff girl for indulging and sharing in my giddiness!

Oh wow - I love closet pictures! Isn’t that really porn for women? * :)

Your new storage is lovely. I especially love your shoe storage. I could look at these pictures over and over. The quilt on your bed is gorgeous, too.

* A few years ago my friends gave me a book called Porn for Women. Mostly it was pictures of men vacuuming, and that sort of thing.

You are inspiring me to tackle the closet (perhaps after DD returns to college post holiday). I love folding drawers that way and now must go google KonMari folding to learn new tips. It is a sign of how busy my life has been of late that I have not organized my drawers this way in ages.

I missed your clicking thread (busy life!) and will now search it for insights. It sounds like you have identified some keys to help you moving forward. I am learning that my life is so casual, I need to find ways to dress my style that don't feel inauthentic to my uber casual world.

Love that sweater in 8 - such a gorgeous color and shape. Who makes it?

What a fabulous new closet and a huge improvement on the old version! Wow! Congratulations on making the change.

And congratulations again on your new epiphanies and purchases. That time of reflection was really helpful. So glad the "house shoes" idea resonated for you, and that it's helping you feel pulled together. Ditto the 'at home work uniform." You look fantastic in the version you show here. Great idea to layer under the tunic instead of over, too.

There is nothing wrong with outfit planning. It's not rigid at all -- it actually offers you a period of creative reflection each week as you plan, and then you can get on with being creative elsewhere in your life while you go on auto-pilot.

Oh another beautiful closet! I like how you have dedicated footwear that is comfy yet stylish for working from home. Upping my game when WFH is a goal of mine this year; it's too easy to throw on loungewear if I don't have any reason to be face-to-face with the world. I wear sherpa lined knitted socks in the winter, but a refined slipper could be the answer!

SarahD8! I love peeking into other people's closets. Congratulations on the remodel! IT IS BEYOND GORGEOUS!

I loved seeing the drawers too. I am a huge fan of the KonMari style of folding. It took me an entire weekend to change my wardrobe over to the KonMari style, but it was well worth it. I can see everything in my wardrobe instantly. The organization is gorgeous to behold.

The second picture made me laugh. That in-between stage is so important, but it is always chaos. How long did you have to live with the chaos? I can stand it for a "period" of time and then I start to go stark raving mad.

Congratulations on graduating to a wonderful, beautiful and functional closet! Your world is going to be significantly easier and getting dressed much more time efficient.
I understand what you are saying about preplanning outfits. I do like to plan a couple of outfits ahead of time. It makes my mornings so much easier. In the winter I wear pants most of the time. When I plan outfits I will plan two top options for each pair of pants. I may not wear the same pair of pants twice in a week, but will very likely wear the same pair of pants the following week and I already have the top half of my outfit planned. That said, I am very flexible about changing my mind. I am fine with totally changing the plan.
Enjoy your new closets!

I love closets. Your new system looks First Class. Your shoes will eventually settle in. Or maybe they will feel extra special all the time. How nice would that be?

A beautiful closet and a fun post. You are so right that even if you are going nowhere, you still deserve to dress well, just for you. The new closet will make a world of difference in dressing with ease.

I am sure you and your shoes will get very accustomed to their new business class lifestyle. I got a dog mid year that had been at a kennel and was a breeder, it too no time for Miss Margot to enjoy her new luxury lifestyle. She now sleeps at my feet on the bed!

That is awesome. What you had before looked so difficult to manage. Harder than my 27 years of small closets! Also well done on the new stuff. I often wear earrings at home- not today. Today is very hot and I have a singlet and shorts with only my watch. But earrings make me feel more put together, as do nicer slippers.

Oh wow, I love a good closet post, and your new closet looks so streamlined and fab! Well done and congratulations! I know how good it feels because we had a new system installed in our closet a few years ago and it totally changed how I looked at my wardrobe. Inspiring!

Happy new year all! The last several weeks I’ve been reading the forum but haven’t had much time to post. We’ve been working on a big house project — swapping the master bedroom and office. In the course of all that I’ve acquired proper clothing storage for the first time in my adult life and let me tell you, it’s glorious. I love peeking inside people’s closets, maybe you’ll get a kick out of seeing mine.

Photo 1 is the “before” pic — not an effective way of storing my clothing. I could never remember which bin something was in and the bins were hard to keep tidy. Also, it turns out that having two grown adults sleep in a 10 x 10 room full of textiles in a damp climate is not so great, who knew!

Photo 2 — during. Aggghhhh chaos! For most of the holidays (which are thankfully low-key and casual for us) my strategy for getting dressed was “this is vaguely clean and I know where it is located.”

Photo 3 — Our new setup! IKEA Pax wardrobes. I’m on the left, husband is on the right.

Photo 4 — inside my big cabinet. Just finished arranging this today, ahhhh so happy! (My hanging clothes will go in the room's built-in closet, with tall boots underneath.)

Photo 5 — DRAWERS! I’m thrilled. You can see I’m another aficionado of KonMari folding! (And I’ve converted my husband — he’s KonMari folding his shirts as I type this, lol.)

Photo 6 — inside my smaller cabinet. Shoes and my jewelry box. I keep wondering if my shoes feel the way I did that one time I flew business class. (“Wow, this is pretty nice…but I SO don’t belong here!”)

Now I am super motivated to up my style for 2019! I’ve also continued to ponder and experiment based on everyone’s super helpful comments on my wardrobe “clicking” thread a while back. This led to a few really good purchases towards the end of the year that I’d like to use to guide me going forward:

-Black tunic-length sweater (Photo 7). I started thinking about, what’s the simplest possible outfit that will make me feel polished when working at home? I came up with: skinny jeans, tunic sweater, some sort of lightweight and unobtrusive jewelry (short necklace, small hoops or stud earrings, my rings). I can add further embellishment like a longer pendant or a scarf when I leave the house. I run very cold, but I’ve found that this formula works for me if I wear a longsleeve heat tech shirt (also a new discovery for me) underneath. It’s great to have another outfit formula, it contributes to the feeling of variety and it’s also nice to have a release from the inevitable fuss of layers.

-House shoes — embroidered black velvet slides (Photo 8). These replace my noisy, clunky, seen-better-days wooden soled clogs (which have been demoted/promoted to run-outside-and-get-the-mail-slash-empty-the-recycling shoes). I feel a bit silly raving about, essentially, a pair of slippers, but I’ve been so happy with these! They make my at-home outfits feel “finished” if that makes sense. I find I’m also more apt to dress up a little more, even for an at-home day, knowing I can put these on my feet. This purchase made me realize that although I’ve been fairly good at avoiding buying for a fantasy life, that doesn’t quite mean that I’ve been buying for my real life. It turns out the answer to “where are you going in that?” is usually “literally nowhere,” and I need to keep that top of mind.

-Green and gold sweater (Photo 8). I feel like I’ve nailed “festive casual” with this purchase. I can wear it casually just because — like with the jeans here. Or I can dress it up (I wore it with a tulle skirt when we hosted Christmas dinner). This is a piece that feels dressy and special, but is in line with my lifestyle, which is very casual and low-key. And because it’s WARM, it’s actually practical and wearable for me.

A final insight, not tied to a particular purchase: Nothing makes me feel better about my wardrobe & style than planning my outfits ahead of time (like on a weekly basis). I feel so sheepish about outfit planning, it seems so fussy and rigid! But it’s super effective for me in terms of dressing better, outfit variety, and generally getting more out of my wardrobe. So, I’m resolving to embrace this in 2019!

Thanks for reading and thanks for all of your wonderful help and insights this past year!
