Suz, you saying yours don’t feel like denim makes me wonder if mine are different? They definitely feel like denim.

Aquamarine, thank you. I think I will be more diligent in the future with polishing my jewelry.

Jenni, I was born and raised in California and I call it sunscreen or sunblock. We live at 4600 feet now, and before this we lived at Lake Tahoe, at 6300 feet. The sun is very intense. I’m only half joking when I say the growth industry here is skin cancer removal. :(

I’m with Angie, I’m just happy to “see” you again, one of my first forum friends I feel. You look fab! Cute bag.
I don’t have any answers about the tarnishing. Glad you’re wearing your sunblock!
On my 65th birthday in March, on a ferry in the sun, I sat next to 2 visiting Californians. I heard them mention “sun cream” so I introduced myself and said we call it sunBLOCK in NZ!

Yes, I think your denim *must* be light, Janet, or we have different pants! Denim does come in 3 gauges. Most of my other denim is considerably heavier than these pants, though my new Levis (with lyocell added) are lighter.

My railroad stripe pants don't even feel like denim at all -- they are a cotton fabric but not a denim weave. But they also have the tiny bit of elastane or whatever, which makes things hotter as well.

Suz, maybe all my other denim is lightweight, so these feel heavy by comparison? Anyway, they felt heavy to me. BTW, I was probably being a big baby WRT to the heat. First, I wasn’t used to it. Just the week before it was cold. Also, it was 92F with virtually no humidity. So those who suffer in the humidity, feel sorry for us, having to apply lip balm twenty times a day. :)

I have to admit I would not wear them in 90 degree F heat, either! They are not that light! Just lighter than most denim. For my climate they work in intermediate weather. Up to 75 or so. Maybe higher with ocean breezes. But 90 and humid? No way! Then again it never gets like that here in the absence of a heat dome.

Lynn, thank you. The pants are not made of lightweight fabric, IMO. They felt heavy to me, probably because it was a hot day. It got to 92F. I wanted to wear my new pants, come Hell or Highwater. :) This weekend the highs are going to be in the 60s and 70s, and the pants would be fine. Suz and I definitely live in different climates. Hers really sounds lovely.

What a darling mini tote bag!

The cropped utility pants are lovely on you, a perfect compliment with the white top. And I agree I would not have felt comfortable in shorts for the dentist either.

I have not experienced the tarnish issue you mentioned, however, I use these two sided cloths to clean my silver jewelry after wearing it. Maybe it adds a protective layer to the jewelry?

Irina, thank you. I’ll look into it.

Lisa, I love this little tote. Actually, a tote with short handles and a long strap that zips shut is my favorite style of bag.

Angie, thank you. I think the sunscreen plus sweating caused the tarnish. Gold doesn’t tarnish. I have some gold jewelry. I should get it out and see what I have. I haven’t worn it since I went grey.

Here is the small tote and a giant LE tote I bought 25 or 30 years ago when I went to Wisconsin for a seminar. We use it to store tote bags!

I have no answer for your tarnish question, I'm afraid. I wear sunscreen, necklaces and light tops all the time without a hitch. Granted, I'm wearing gold. Could that be it?

Carol, thank you. I thought the sunscreen was dry, but I did get a little sweaty.

Suz, I’m glad you approve. I just love railroad stripes. It’s funny, a week ago it was cold, and yesterday it was pretty hot. I really can’t give up sunscreen. The sun is intense here and I’ve already had several suspicious things removed. Luckily, no skin cancer, so far.

Donna, I’ll try your experiment. The sunscreen is Elta MD, which my doctor uses. I thought it was zinc because it contains zinc, but now I realize it actually both chemical and zinc, which is misleading. But it’s not awful to wear, so I’ve been wearing it year round. I use a different sunscreen on my hands, zinc, which turns them a pasty grey. And when we were in Galapagos last year, I wore all zinc everywhere, except for this, on my face, neck and chest because I thought it was just zinc.

Would a realistic test be: A dab of sunscreen on white paper => dip the necklace (maybe near the clasp?) in the sunscreen => rub that part of the necklace on a white facial tissue. I assume you use chemical sunscreen vs. physical sunscreen? I'm trying to use physical sunscreen in places that might touch clothing having stained so much (luckily) exercise gear.

I am chuckling -- what is "heavy denim" to you is "lightweight cotton" to me! Different climates for sure!

They look good on you! Amazed you had to size down -- I didn't. I guess my waist has expanded even more than I thought, oops! But really, it just goes to show you how variable fit is, in all items. It's a wonder any of us ever get anything to fit us!

And of course I love your blue and white outfit. The bag and strap are really cute!

I don't have an answer to the tarnish question. I rarely wear necklaces so even though I am a silver person, it hasn't come up. The necklaces I do have tend to be choker-style rather than dangling.

I'm with Carol on sunscreen, though. It's so ick that I try to get it to dry on me first. But honestly, that is hard in humidity.

I don't know. Sunscreen is a pain for me anyway, so I try to put it on and let it dry before putting on clothing, or being very, very careful to rub it in well under the neckline.

I don't see why a silver neckace would do this. All I would say is, maybe try the same process with a white shirt, and no sunscreen, to see if the same thing happens.

I do like your summery outfit, but I agree--almost any denim is hard when it gets warm.

Yesterday, I ran some errands in the morning, then went out in the afternoon to the dentist. It was in the low 90s in the afternoon, but I thought cropped pants were better for the dentist than shorts. I wore my new railroad stripe Wit and Wisdom Utility crops, a new white sleeveless tee, old navy Vionic flipflops, and a sterling silver necklace and pendant. I carried a newish small natural and navy canvas tote from Lands End, with an embroidered strap from Amazon. I’ve been using it a lot since I got it. I felt pretty good in this outfit in the morning. The pants are made of heavy denim and were a little too warm for the afternoon. I sized down, but the waist was still a bit big, but not too much.

As I was getting ready for my dentist appointment, I noticed tarnish on my tee, at the neckline. The chain had seemed untarnished but obviously wasn’t. I wonder if the fact that I was wearing sunscreen or that I was a little sweaty had anything to do with it. I changed tops to go to the dentist.

I suppose this has happened before, but I wear a lot of charcoal, so I wouldn’t have noticed it. Has anyone else experienced this? Did you change how you store your jewelry? I don’t want this to happen again, so instead of my lackadaisical jewelry storage, I suppose I should get those special anti tarnish bags. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
