Agree with your decision. Your knife- pleat skirts are more flattering and versatile. You could for sure wear this type of skirt in a scaled- down version for your frame, but this one is not the one.

Yes I have my best friend who has done that. We do often like similar things but she has an enormous wardrobe with no compunction about adding to it, especially if she finds something on sale or secondhand online where she feels the price is good. Then she has sometimes given something to me. Because I am now so much more careful with what I bring in here, with one top that I only wore 3 times over several years I returned it to her saying I wasn’t wearing it enough for it to deserve a place in my wardrobe and she could give it to someone else or donate it herself. That changed it back into her problem not my problem and seems to have cured her from doing that to me. Similar to Jules’ strategy!

Anne, in my life my mother is the one who tries to pass on random thrift/seconds store items that aren’t quite right for her (and usually odd in some way or other). I’ve learned to be quite firm about handing things back to her ‘oh no thank you’ and not let her get away with making it my problem. Alternately if I have a donation bag going I tell her I can put it straight in there If she wants. We’ve gotten to the point where I can sometimes acknowledge/appreciate to her that she found something interesting but that doesn’t mean it’s going to fit me or my life. The latest just last night was a lovely silk dress that is clearly child sized… she had some delusion it would fit my sturdy teen kids. I admired it and sent it home with her.
Anyway, I am commiserating not lecturing I hope

Thanks for the encouragement not to keep the skirt, Joy. I certainly don't need any. It's a little bit of work even to wear the two I bought this year, only because I have been such a dress wearer skirts mean extra thought (and I probably need to buy a few more tops)

I think it looks fabulous, and I love the slight asymmetry in the pleats. I'd give it a whirl on altering the waist, with at least a loose basting stitch. Then style it, go about your daily activities. If you like it, make the alteration more permanent. If not, take it out, and donate. That said, my sense from your comments is that perhaps you don't like it enough to go to the trouble. So, it might be one to donate straightaway.

Zaeobi, it is a bit different, but I had some items in this fabric, bengaline, before, about 14 years ago when I joined this forum! One architectural style didn't get much love then, but I think might now, since Deborah has showed us many of those looks.
Bijou, not sure that I can be bothered altering, but yes, could be good for work, which is where I wore it yesterday, and probably for casual as well.
SF, It would look better on your leggy height, but probably too big for you.

Sal and Angie. What do I think? Well, I would never have bought it myself, and I did buy two new skirts already this year.

It's good quality, was bought from a consignment shop. But I am not inclined to spend anything on alterations and my sewing machine is broken. I could take in a side seam at mum's , but not sure I would hem. (so your question answered SF)

When it was given to me, I checked if it was OK to donate if I didn't want it, and I am inlined to do that. Let a taller, slightly bigger person enjoy it.

Thanks for your help in thinking it through!

It looks a size big. I also think it's a little long. I suspect it won't be that comfortable to wear slung low on your hips, and at almost maxi length. Especially when you sit down. Your call if the alterations are worth it.

It’s really great but does look a bit big and long. Just an idea: I had a maxi skirt shortened by taking length off the top, not the bottom. It would require taking off the waistband and taking in the top in waist and hip, and a new zipper, so that may be too much. But I think even if you have it taken in at the waist to bring the waistband further up, that will help. Can you pin it so it fits you higher up on the waist to see how it would hang then?

That skirt has a ‘look’ about it that reminds me of the stuff you see from the Row, and kind of sits alongside the super wide leg pants trend. You need to be very purposeful styling a fashion forward ‘look’ otherwise the whole thing can be kind of overwhelming. If you feel up to the challenge, and if that amount of material is easy to move in and do the activities of your daily life, then by all means play with it.

It's a beautiful skirt and looks pretty with that sweater. I think it looks too big for you overall and kind of overwhelming, though. The length is part of it. If you took it in enough that it sits higher and is more of a midi length, I think it could look great with a pair of tall boots. I don't know that I'd simply shorten it, because the long line of pleats is part of the skirt's appeal, to my eye.
