I've been practicing this delayed gratification thing for my entire life--first out of necessity, and now because I've come to realize it's the smart way to shop. I keep my eye on things I want and whenever possible add the items to a wish list. I then wait to see if they go on sale. If the price is right and the item is still available in my size, I pounce. Sometimes the item sells out and I lose out, but most of the time I do end up getting the item for a lower price. That said, if it's something I need (vs. something I want). I go ahead and pay full price. By shopping this way, I keep my budget in check and don't feel bad paying full price when I need to.

I find shopping very frustrating so I don't do it for fun...so no constant browsing for me. I tend to not shop or to shop a lot, which is I guess what is happening to you. Also, I delay on seasons just from not knowing what I really want until I'm in the middle of the season.

I do get that edgy feeling like I'm missing a good sale, or that what I want won't be available when I get around to looking. What I've noticed is that sales are constant anymore...miss one, another one is up in a week. And not finding what I want is sort of constant so now or later doesn't matter.

Since chucking half my clothes and trying to do better thanks to YLF, I'm trying to get a wish list and shop with some intelligence. Constant browsing would help, but I'm settling for periodic browsing. In the long run I think either way will be fine for your wardrobe...it's only the fun you might miss if you really like to shop.

Oh dear...I'm very much prone to delayed gratification. So bad in the past, that my wardrobe could get quite embarrassingly shabby. My financial advisor was the one who told me I should start spending some of my money!

Since I'm more bricks and mortar, and there isn't much that is wonderful where I live, I tend to shop when the opportunity presents itself...such as travel for business or pleasure.

I keep Pinterst boards, and 'Look Books' with pages from magazines, and when I shop, I'll go right to the SA and point at a picture, and ask "Do you have this?"

I agree with Deb that if you miss something, there is usually something else pretty fab put there. Then, of course, there are the iconic things one saves up for and will always be available...for a price.

My work goes in some degree of cycles as well and I may not have any extra time for several weeks in a row. So realistically I'm more likely to have some spurts of energy and time intermittently and not every day or even month. But then I don't want to feel like I have to buy something just because some time opens up--if it isn't really what I need or want, I want to do the DG thing and say, that's fine, I can wait until the next free time comes along.

I'm not a good internet browser to begin with but I did branch out this year to try some other retailers. That was somewhat successful, but also can be draining to always wonder what's around the next website.

However, like you I learned that there's always going to be something else later, if not now, so it can't hurt to save up time and $$ for something better. Also I like taking a breather and trying things out at home before adding something else new. I don't want to be focusing too much on what's wrong with my wardrobe--meaning, I have really liked the changes I've made this year, but want to figure out how to stay on the positive and not feel constantly that it's not adequate--that just has that slippery slope feeling to me and also can be mistake-prone. So making an effort to take time to feel blessed, as it were, has become more important. Retail research is okay; retail therapy isn't as good.

I think one thing that has been useful is trying to get some handle on Angie's ( and others) various lists and descriptors of where items fit in --needs and wants, essentials and statements, basics or pops, landscape changers, trends, replacements, upgrades, refreshers!

I've put several of them in a gemish there, but actually I'm finding that developing a style and shopping language is helpful.

I do not like going to brick and mortar stores. I have always been a catalog browser, even as a child. I did not buy much but loved to look. Then web shopping came about and I do the same thing. I load up the carts and leave them there. I go back periodically to see if anything is on sale or if I cannot stop thinking about it. Then I know it is time to purchase. Now with garden centers and plants, that is another story. I have many needs in this department. Even when I have nowhere to put them.

I shop in cycles. I also don't have a lot of time for shopping. Also, I work on a computer so even in the evenings when I potentially have time to shop online(when not cleaning, cooking, taking kids to soccer practice, watching a little bit of TV or reading a book before bed), I don't usually want to go anywhere near a computer. I like shopping this way because I get to thoroughly evaluate every new purchase without getting distracted by something else new. I'm excited about my new things for weeks just because I have new things so rarely.

I prefer constantly browsing, but that's primarily online. I do not have the time or energy to constantly browse in person. If online shopping did not exist, I would just shop less. (Which may or may not be a bad thing).

Online shopping results in its own brand of delayed gratification though, namely that of having to wait for things to get shipped to me. There's also the possibility of having to wait even longer to exchange for a different size or color or other thing for PPP reasons. For example, I've
already gone two rounds with ordering tube skirts, and am waiting on
round 3. So many variables when you can't try it on in person - size,
color/pattern, cut, length, etc and I do feel a little bad about
ordering all the permutations at once.

I was going to wholeheartedly add Suz's two reasons to the job time eating one but then I realized I've been online shopping since the last millenium. Definitely a case of necessity is the mother of invention. NOTHING was available up here in Tahoe. I remember having to search online in the late late 90's for a yoga mat (it wasn't quite as mainstream) and buying my first clothing item, a Marika crop bra top for workouts. Oh, yeah, and my ancient Tanita bodyfat scale in about '97 or '98. But now I digress . . . hee hee

My circumstances have always enforced some degree of delayed gratification, for different reasons at different times.

1. Finances. Couldn't afford stuff, therefore I could not buy it. (This is not so big a problem any more, except for super high end items or major purchases like boots or coats, that I couldn't go crazy on if I wanted a budget for anything else.)

2. Simple availability. Stuff isn't available where I live and/ or can't be ordered. Got to wait, in that case, for my shopping trips to the city.

I never used to browse online at all until I joined YLF. Now I go in cycles for sure, depending on my work schedule and where we are in a given season.

Rae, I definitely prefer constant browsing! But delayed gratification is like exercise - not what I want to do, but the more I do it, the easier it gets.

Frankly my life doesn't 'force me' to shop one way or another but I find that when I am bored/down/with not so much to do I browse a lot. Which doesn't mean that I buy just that I wish a lot, thinking trough, rationalize and eventually make a decision.
When I have more things to do I have more fun with my wardrobe at home, don't feel so stressed out to buy the perfect item and eventually when I have time I go back to the stores and have more fun trying things.
So although I am human and resisting temptation is hard I am happier with delayed gratification.(if only I could do it all the time...)

Delayed what now?

Only half joking. I just keep finding immediate needs recently, especially for more comfortable shoes. Sigh. And 4" heels used to be NBD. I wish I didn't have to devote funds to this, but I do prefer to browse constantly, for professional and personal reasons.

But for wants (rather than needs) I'm doing far, far better with PPP delay. As long as there is a hunt on, I'm happy, lol. Waited a good year for my b/w bag replacement. Waited many years to plunk down serious money for the perfect ripped jeans. Still waiting on perfect khakis, which I hope will always be around to try.

Which do you prefer now that you've experienced both?

Yeah, with Mo on this one. Can handle delayed gratification, but really sick of the holes in the wardrobe transferring from year to year. Especially when in my case the budget allocated for sone essentials is only available intermittently as well (bane of freelancing) and not finding those items means constantly squandering said budget on unworthies and their replacements. But yeah, I have very much realised I can do without the latest and even the greatest---my challenge being more about realising I don't need to or should not rush to stock up when opportunity does present, that there will be other opportunities and better shopping if I save up longer perhaps.

I have cycles. I call them moves HA! But, yes, right now shopping is on hold (ignore the grasping at lemmings recently) until I hit FL. I am actually kinda sad that my new Spiegel leather jacket (mottled back panels and all) will hang for a few months here until I can come back for a visit and decide if it's cold enough to warrant packing it up.
I also get so busy at work in high season that it's all I can do to find a half hour to hit Ross in the middle of town, honestly. So I go weeks at a time without shopping when schedules are busy. It is refreshing in a way, and maddening at other times.
Refreshing to know you can get by just fine without and life goes on. But maddening when you are searching for something in your not so spare time and the season is closing down on you (printed shorts and striped maxi dress, I'm thinking of you!).

My new job leaves VERY little time for browsing or shopping in person or online. On the other hand, my hours mean that once every 6 weeks I get a week off with pay, which allows me to catch up with haircuts, friends, DS's school, and so forth. The first of those "break weeks" is coming up next week.

Because of this new schedule, I'm realizing that although it makes me antsy, I can survive waiting to search for and order items I think I need. It's meant that some things have passed me by, but it's also made me realize that's not the end of the world. It's a good lesson and not one I probably would have ever learned had my circumstances not changed.

Do you have any thoughts on this? Does your life force you to shop in cycles, rather than constantly browsing? Which do you prefer?
