I am going against the stream and voting for the first one. It is a bit more exciting in both the hem and the general look. I like to be original though and the second dress is nice but conservative...it all depends on how you feel about them! which one fulfills the happiness factor?

I prefer the second but my preference is based on proportion more than anything. The waist on the first one seems a bit low for you. If you look at them side by side, you can see that the waist sits higher on the second and the proportions seem better - at least to my eye.

Both look lovely on you. I have a black lace/nude underlay tadashi shoji dress and love the brand.

Both dresses are quite stunning. I err more towards the second as I have thing about hem ruffles:(

I like them both on you. #1 looks a bit more modern with the lace pattern, but then again #2 looks a bit more feminine shape-wise. They're both great, just different.

Neither of them read as matronly to me, although the shoes go in that direction (sorry).

I much prefer #2. While the lace is a great idea, I'm not crazy about the hem or sleeve detail of #1. It feels more girlish or less sophisticated.

Caro, hi! Im not really looking for black; it just so ubiquitous. So at least I found some partly not- black. Navy isn't great on me but I keep my eye out for charcoal, bronze, dark taupe, burgundy. Keeping current dress on hand ' til new size comes in.

If I were you I wouldn't be looking for black. Do you wear navy? My reasoning is you can wear navy anywhere you can wear black & also to weddings & parties when black may be too sombre.

If you do need a black dress then I like #2 too - it is more sophisticated imo. If the smaller size doesn't work could you have this one altered?

I think you all are great help. # 1 is very close and I so wanted it to work when I ordered it. The ruffles are net and not me. I like swirly skirts with knife pleats or gores better.

Angie' s jean post may have helped , too. If she can still be looking after trying on 50 pairs of jeans, maybe I can try not to get grumpy over 4 dresses! Also I will have to keep capsule strategy in mind. The point is to have a small capsule of dressy items that I really can grab and not be in a tizzy shopping before each event, and not just collect random dresses.

Dress in number 2 seems to be much more of a classic style that'll remain stylish for a LOOng time. It also seems to be more forgiving as far as the fit goes. I like it more and it seems like it'd be very easy to wear a cardigan or jacket over, like the last comment said about dress number 1.

I love the lace on nude dress, but I'm not crazy about the bottom ruffle hem. #2 looks great! A minimalist clean cropped cardigan or jacket would look great over it (although IMHO you can totally wear it sleeveless).

So hard to get all the right details in one dress! I do know I like the dark lace over nude/taupe for a look that is softer than black. That type of fabric is everywhere now, though mostly in sheath styles, so that's why I'm looking to see if I can find the right style. Probably will be so "out" in a year!

Here is a Tadashi Shoji dress that was in transit during my post on dress delivery.
Black lace over nude.

Now, there is a fit problem. The bodice has darts that create roomage intended for bustage, and I am unable to, er, fulfill the expectations. "My" seamstress may be able to take in the dart and still get the right fit, but I would have to see. I think it is otherwise the right size and just after I ordered it I see no more small sizes available. It's also "straighter" though the self-belt is too loose, so I would aim for more fit. The material and pattern is really pretty; is the style too "girly", do you think?
I am not sure of my eye anymore for the matronly-girly balance.

Next to it, just to compare silhouettes, I've re-posted the Adrianna Papell dress in size 4, which is too big as-is, but I've ordered the 2 to see if it would fit better, .

Neither of these is actually intended for MOTB (hoping for more spring-like color) , but are under consideration for my imaginary party lifestyle, which includes wedding guest opportunities. #1 is definitely a party frock. #2 is problematic due to being sleeveless, so if the new size fits and I added it to wardrobe it will be an orphan unless I develop jackets to go with it. Still it's kind of interesting because the fabric, which is actually a kind of subtle print with black and bronze, has some ability to dress up or down (e.g., classic tailored blazer vs. blingy bolero/cardi stuff), whereas #1 is all dressy.

Any comments are welcome!
