It is definitely possible to find shoes that don't require a break-in period to be pain-free. It takes some research and a lot of trying on. I've found that cheap shoes are more likely to hurt my feet; however, painful feet come at all price points--my Dolce & Gabbana slingback pumps were some of the most uncomfortable shoes I've ever worn. I wore them twice and passed them on because nope no way not this chick I don't care how freaking much they cost nope not happening. I do find that better materials and better craftsmanship often make for a more comfortable shoes, though.

I do not keep any shoes that rub, or give a hint of a blister at first try on. I have comfortable shoes from a wide price range,, fron$19.95 sale sandals to $149.95. I have found some expensive shoes to be the most uncomfortable. So for me, it is factors such as style, material, brands, etc. to be guidelines as to how they will work for me.

This never happens to me. Or rather, if I feel any discomfort at all when trying on the shoes, I assume it'll only be worse with more wear, so I don't buy them.

I hate when I get a cute pair of heels, and they hurt my feet. I can almost never wear heels without some kind of discomfort. Even some flats hurt my feet, but I found this tutorial to actually really helps https://youtu.be/yvbQOeHUIQ4

Pain from the get-go is bad, usually. Cheap shoes likely won't ever break in, especially if they are synthetic leather because it won't stretch, but leather will break in a little. My Clarks ballet flats pinched a tiny bit on the top of my foot (not on the strap, just the where the toe box ends when I first got them and I just wore them with thin socks (I know, the horror) the first few times until they stretched a bit and now they're the most comfy things I've ever owned.

I don't buy shoes that hurt from the start. I don't mind some *slight* breaking in, but I'm pretty good at distinguishing between shoes that need to be walked in for a few hours and the ones that are just never going to feel good. Correct sizing was something that took me years to learn, though. After wearing pointe shoes for much of my teen years, I tended to wear street shoes that were too tight, reflecting the snug feel of ballet shoes. I finally started fitting my shoes a half size larger and fitting to my larger foot and my feet are much happier.

I do tend to have feet of iron, though. The only shoes I consistently avoid are very pointy shoes (except for one notable exception) and peeptoes. My first three toes are nearly the same length, which causes problems in these kind of shoes.

My feet can't handle cheap shoes any more either. They're so tempting, but it's better for me to invest in one good pair when I can afford it.

I have a bunion on one foot and have been debating with the doctor about surgery. As Maya said I don't think cheap shoes cause them, but if you have any tendency (and I believe most people do), cheap shoes will aggravate and accelerate the problems. In my case it was probably due to cocktail waitressing in cheap 3" pumps when I was young (shudder).

I read once to invest in your shoes and your bag, then wear relatively inexpensive clothes and no one will know the difference.

This summer I finally came to the realization that my feet can no longer handle cheap shoes. So I'm doing a lot of trial fittings at shoe stores and taking note of which brands seem comfortable. If something feels comfy in the store, I'll just keep walking in them around the store while I hunt for other pairs. Then I try to stalk those pairs online for a good sale.

So far I've bought a pair of brown Dansko sandals, tan White Mountain mules, and black Bare Traps ankle boots.

Theresa one brand you can get pretty easily here are Hush Puppies. I got a red pair from Mathers last year that are extremely comfortable. Myer & DJs also stock a lot of different comfort brands, but I know that doesn't help you much.

Honestly though I still think Me Toos are cuter than the Hush Puppies. And even with the cost of international postage they are cheaper (esp if you get the Me Toos on sale somewhere). I wear size 10 (sometimes 9.5) consistently in both Australian and US sizes. Am I being enough of an enabler here?

Theresa: bunions are genetic, sometimes, I think. My grandfather had terrible bunions (he never wore high heels or pointy shoes obviously), I actually remember him in sandals, my mom - pretty bad, too, unfortunately, she actually gave up 'shoes' and lives in sneakers.. I'm spared so far, thankfully, I do have slight bunions but nothing causing trouble. I have to admit though, I do not wear high heels or pointy shoes (apart from a few crazy years in my early twenties), because I don't want to aggravate the problem.
About breaking the shoes in, I think it all depends on the shoe, some brands that 'last forever' like Fryes or Dr Martens are said to need to be broken in. Tough leather and all. But overall, Id say good quality shoes shouldn't hurt. I'm still waiting for my Fryes, so I can't comment on it, hope it won't be that bad. Used to have a pair of Docs in my teenage years and honestly, I think it wasn't that terrible. I do have fussy feet too..

I can relate, I've done some serious bruising breaking in new shoes. These days, I can deal with some minor discomfort but bruising is no longer allowed!

Over time I realized that a - I cannot wear any synthetic materials ( I'm so sorry cute animals) or patent, without serious consequences. b- I needed to go up 1/2 a size in most shoes, that eliminated some of the problems.

Also, if I feel that a blister is forming, I promptly reach for my aquaphor ( I always carry some since I suffer from chapped lips) and rub a small film in the area where I'm getting the friction. It helps! I think Vaseline would work as well.

ETA: hahaha I see there is an actual product for this. I confess, I don't read all of the answers before I post. I must check this one out!

It used to happen to me with mostly every single pair of shoes I bought. It's so not happening anymore, I think I've learnt how to choose my shoes. I have very fussy feet eventhough I'm only 22, I think it is genetic, and when I complain about shoes and hurting feet, my 22 year-old girlfriends look at me like I'm weird because they are capable of sporting 20 euros shoes (I'm Spanish) with high heels -ok, not so high but like 2/3 inches) without any suffering and I just can't. So yes, I try to save from clothing to spend it on shoes. And I do spend quite a lot of money on leather, good quality shoes. Maybe that makes me a posh girl, well, my feet and I don't care anymore. Last pairs of shoes I bought from Clarks, Wonders and Campers are just incredibly soft. The Camper ones have a 2.6'' inches heel so they do hurt my feet, but that's me not being used to high heels, and after a whole morning wearing them around Barcelona for the first, I had no blisters at all.

I find that the Diana Ferrari Supersoft brand is pretty comfy, and so is Airflex (from Betts, I think?). Some of the styles are a bit nanna, but each season usually has something on-trend and attractive.

I haven't bought cheap shoes in years because I've got no toughness in my feet at all. But the other month I slipped and got some cute purple ballet flats from Novo... they were so cute! and the soles were padded! When I got home I realised that as lovely as the soles were, the uppers were made of something that feels not much sturdier than cardboard, and about as sharp in the back of my heel.

But price isn't always a guarantee of comfort - some high-end brands assume that of course you'll be torturing your feet for the sake of fashion, darling! And even Angie has some 2-hour shoes for sitting in rather than walking.

LOL Tam, I think being a shoe snob is not necessarily a bad thing! How do the Me Too's compare to our sizing? I'm usually a 7 here, or a 38 or a UK5...

I've found these pairs of homypeds that I surprisingly like (just for running around town/school etc)!!! What do you think? Otherwise I may just bite the bullet and order some Me Too's!

I think there is always going to be a bit of trial and error in getting comfy shoes. Having said that, certain shoes like the Me Too Swanns fit me like a glove from day 1 and have never caused a problem. That is the holy grail of shoes as far as I'm concerned!! Maybe I've become a bit of a shoe snob, but I wouldn't consider buying "cheap" shoes from kmart, or even target. I just don't see how the materials they are made of can be comfortable when worn for long periods of time. Maybe I am wrong, but I don't want to put my feet through agony in order to find out!

I noticed last time I was up in the big town, that one of the podiatrists has expanded into the store next door and are stocking shoes, so I think I will go and have a look in there next time I'm up to see what they have.

Do any of you Aussie gals know of any particular brands that are easily found here that are particularly comfy? Besides the good old "Homypeds", I can't think of any brands that are particularly focused on comfort, but then my shoe selection is smaller than most!! (And last time I looked at the homypeds range, they weren't quite the granny shoes I remembered them as!).

I can see there being a lot of error though as I never know if they will be comfy till i've worn them out and by then it's too late to return them. i've started heading towards the wider fit section x

I do something similar. I use Body Glide, which is a non-chafing stick (looks like deodorant!) for runners. Rub it all over my feet and makes my shoes MUCH more comfortable. You can get it here: http://www.drugstore.com/bodyg.....body+glide

Theresa, I thought you might be interested in this post from Sally at Already Pretty

http://www.alreadypretty.com/2.....table.html

a GREAT tip for making shoes more comfy is to rub some leather protecting cream on the INSIDE of your shoe, letting it sit for 10 mins, wipe off the excess with a paper towel then put on and wear for as long as possible. Since doing this, my tight peeptoes are MUCH better.

Theresa, to answer your question, that only happens to me with pumps and ballet flats.

With sandals, the straps keep the shoes on (and my toes stick out of sandals anyway, so it isn't an issue usually--I can wear my normal size).

With boots and oxfords, I'm fine. My heel sometimes slips a bit but it doesn' t bother me at all. Socks and/or insoles often take up a lot of space anyway.

I only wear scrunchy elastic ballet flats to get around that problem. They look a little funny but it's a small price to pay.

With pumps I can only wear mary jane straps.

The only downside to sizing up is that I'm having a hard time getting used to having "big" feet (not really big--US size 7, which is a UK 5 I think). My feet are technically only a 6 or UK 4 in length, so the extra inch really is hard to adjust to even though it's perfectly normal to wear a 7 at my height and weight.

It's frustrating and difficult but my footwear collection is FINALLY getting where it needs to be after years of trial and error (mostly error). I no longer rationalize or try to doctor my shoes into working. If they aren't perfect from the get go, forget it.

I had bunion surgery 3 years ago and it was not fun. I do not wear ill fitting shoes, nor are most bunions caused by ill fitting shoes. Ill fitting shoes just make them worse.

Carole that's a really good point about the bunion surgery - my Nan has a shocking set of bunions and she was told it was from wearing ill fitting shoes her whole life - is that true?

I think you've all convinced me though - I need to try some higher quality shoes...

Off to read Angie's post on the minimal shoe wardrobe you need... I sure can't have as many frivilous pairs of fab shoes as I do cheap shoes LOL

hmm lots to think about! I suspect my next few shoe purchases will be higher end to compare...!! Great, I'll be SYC'ing forever as far as clothes are concerned just to fund my shoes next!!

Kari your hot spots are mine exactly - little toe and back of heel.

Kim that does make perfect sense!

Maya its interesting you mention sizing up - I often find in stores that when I size up, my toes feel happy but then of course they are too long and don't stay on - how do you get around that? or is that just a matter of wider shoes in my regular length?

KG I had a pair like that - initially a blister then perfect... but sadly I wore them to death! hmmm a sign perhaps!!

Megan that exact same spot is a big problem for me if I wear peep toes too! I have a pair of red ones at the moment that have a small opening and they seem to be the only peep toes I can wear because the opening really only shoes the ends of my toes and doesn't rub on that spot! So we are peep toe blister twins LOL

Thanks girls!

Never, ever wear shoes that hurt your feet and cause you pain. That being said, I do allow a little break in time around the house to make sure. I have wasted more money on shoes that I think are going to be comfortable, and end up hurting my feet and go in the donation bag. I now know what brands I can wear, what my trouble spots are and how to fit them and completely avoid any shoe that doesn't fit the bill no matter how cute they are. I'm hoping to avoid painful hard to recover from bunion surgery by changing permanently the way I shop for and buy shoes. I'm not sure it's possible but I am going to try.

I find it depends on the style of shoe and what they are made from.

My patent leather ballet flats were comfy when I first put them on but cut into my heel by the end of the day BADLY. But I perservered through a few days of pain and now they are SO comfortable. The exact same shoe in soft leather was as comfy as a slipper from day 1 so it must be to do with the patent leather.

I must have weird toes because any peep toe shoes take some breaking in and I usually get blisters right on the botton of my big toe nail- weird I know!

Honestly, most of my flats do have a break in period and more often than not, a blister is involved. My favorite pair of flats are leather Kenneth Coles. I've had them for several years--wear them mostly in the spring and fall without socks. It seems the first wearing and the first wearing of the season involve a blister on the back of my heel. Once the blister heals, I'm good for the rest of the season. I think the key is to not wear them all day for the first few wearings--something I usually forget to do.

No way. Your shoes should not cause pain ever. A slight initial discomfort is one thing--I get that from new jeans and new bras as well, and it goes away quickly. But you shouldn't have any lasting marks (like cuts, bruises, or blisters).

I get pain in the same place as you. My toes are not as slanted as most people's so most shoes cut them off in the wrong place. I size up wherever possible for extra length/width.

this is a hard one... occasionally a blister might be part of the break in process, but if the shoe is *uncomfortable* from the get go, I say pass. If it is comfy and after a few hours you notice a hot spot, you might still be okay.
I will say too, that when I finally bit the bullet and bought my first pair of expensive shoes, my life changed forever My husband wouldn't necessarily say for the better, but my feet are sure much happier than the checkbook ;-)

Incidentally, I am reminded of a conversation the last time I bought running shoes. The guy had me trying on several pairs and when I would say "oh, I feel the arch support in this one" he would say.. "that one is out" When I questioned him about it, he said that I shouldn't "feel" the shoes on my feet. If I feel a spot, then it is going to be a blister within a mile. He said my feet should feel that they are being slightly hugged, but I shouldn't feel pressure anywhere. Makes sense!

I'd say no, and I've been in exactly the same boat since I used to think that initial foot pain from a new shoe was normal. I've noticed a huge difference with comfort-oriented brands like Me Too, Indigo by Clarks, Fidji (on the expensive end), and even the Miz Mooz oxfords. Life is too short to wear shoes that cause blisters every time. My hot sports are also on my little toe, which is long but curls under the toe next to it, and especially at the back of my heel. If a shoe threatens to rub there, I just won't buy it because I know it's only a matter of hours before I have a burst blister to deal with.
