I have recently started challenging similar thing here in the UK. Data Protection Act actually states that the company that asks for my personal details must give me the explanation what my data will be used for. Since I've started asking why they need my data and refusing to accept "It's a company policy" as an answer, and pushing that they actually act illegally by initially not providing me with the full explanation of what data's for, they suddenly can process the returns with no fuss.

Hmm, interesting. I'm not a fan of returns when I have to give my license. It's so much private information and more than once I've "magically" started getting mail. No privacy anymore sometimes.

Interesting. This is in SoCal. A few weeks ago when I was at AT they were installing some new small scanner/reader thingies next to the register.

Then, the next time I went in to do a return they asked for my DL and slid it through the scanner/reader thingy. And on the receipt for a purchase I just made, there is a printed statement, "A valid ID is required to return or exchange an item ... reserves the right to limit returns or exchanges regardless of receipt."

I don't know what they do for cash - this is for purchases made with an AT Visa card.

Seems like a policy change to me!

I've made lots of returns to AT, Loft, and Limited, and never had any of these problems as long as I had the receipt and the credit card that I used for the original purchase. Are these issues coming up for purchases made in cash or with a credit card?

At Nordstrom (master of lenient return policy!) we also ask for ID when giving cash back -- and lots of customers complain about this, but there is no way to bypass it. Not sure why we need ID anyway, it's always seemed odd to me, too. No ID is required for credit/debit/gift card returns, though.

I wonder if they adopted something like The Limited?

I rarely shop The Limited, but once brought home a number of items and as I weeded through them, I would return them one at a time and they took my driver's license and ran it through a separate machine each return.

Then when I went to return the last item, they wouldn't let me return - it was their number of return transactions in a certain number of days policy based on tracking my driver's license!

I was peeved, took my item home, called their 800 number to complain (to no avail). Rather than wait for their number of days to reset, I had my daughter return it for me using her driver's license.

Dumb policy! So I hope AT's is more sensible.

I, sort of, understand asking for ID because they are also trying to prevent employees from illegitimate returns, but . . .

I bet they really did! I know I wouldve appreciated it....Ive seen this at NY&Co also.....Kohls always wants ID, but havent seen anything about limiting returns on their receipts. Shoes.com has it on their site they will not let you purchase from them if you return too many items (what is too high a precentage, I wonder?)

If you have paid in cash for your items and wanted to make a return, in order for the computer to go forward at Ann Taylor and LOFT a screen for a cash returns pops up that asks for "
NAME
ADDRESS
PHONE
ZIP and email
I always though the advantage of paying cash was your info was private, And this info was too invasive... so I would just tell people...if you would rather not share your info... I can just make it up...123 Micky mouse lane etc

Most people appreciate the fact I didn't press them for private info for cash back.

Curious, I've never had to fill out anything at Loft. I do know that Limited/Victoria's Secret take down your license number when you return and restrict it to a certain number of items in 90 days.

Has anyone else noticed this? When I return items at AT now, they ask for my ID. On the back of the receipt it says something to the effect that they reserve the right to limit returns. Interesting.
