It can be tricky to figure out what to wear in these types of fields! I once interviewed for an archaeology job that was office based, so I dressed for a normal interview. The people who interviewed me were dressed like archaeologists, though -- jeans and hiking boots! I got the position but I felt a little silly in my suit and heels.

I don't think a red shirt is unacceptable for an interview. I was really surprised to read that.

I personally always wear white with a gray suit, but I don't think it's mandatory - especially in my industry, where people often interview in jeans and tshirts.

#3 is probably one of best button down+pencil combos I have ever seen.

You were thorough in analyzing your wardrobe needs some time ago, you were also thorough in hunting these pieces down. Everything is great.

The hair is fantastic and you are one beautiful woman (I don't remember 'seeing' you before).

Steph-- I was thinking we are close to being "twins". It is nice to hear someone else talk about the same issues I deal with with fit. I do sew, I'm just not advanced enough at finishing and pattern fitting to try my hand at garments that need to look polished. Then again, my grandmother who made all her own girls' clothing (as well as her own) and my mother's wedding dress doesn't like to tailor clothing for me either since she feels like with my bust and waist to hip ratio that it is practically like having to recut the garment without the benefit of having a muslin to work off of.

For those that might be confused, my specialty is museum-type work (talk about a limited job market!). In my experience, employers like to see that you can look put together and responsible/meticulous since they are often offering to let you handle artwork and artifacts (in museums or galleries) that are priceless or worth millions and occasionally there are front-of-house events where you need to look presentable. On the other hand, the work I do is generally behind the scenes and is fairly active and dirty-- plus the industry is creative so showing a style and an ability to be adaptable and rugged is a positive-- sometimes there are testing portions to interviews where you might be asked to handle an object while being observed, climb ladders, or lift things, just like you would have to at work. Too "banker" or "librarian" and you might not be seen as artistic enough to design exhibits in an aesthetically pleasing way, or be creative in problem solving, or willing to handle some of the more "interesting" things that manage to come into the collections. Plus, some places the environmental norm is skewed since the researchers you work with are rocking the "safari and mountain man chic" look, or maybe the "I love my blue hair and tattoos because I am an artist or social scientist" look.

I really appreciate all the feedback. You ladies are making me blush!

Girl, I totally feel you on the interview. THat's what I've been going through with potential clients as of late. I think it's the market - it's not you! (Well at least that's what I tell myself).

Now anyway - onto your outfits. #3 is what stuck out to me the most - perhaps it's because the pink shirt looks great on you and also because that skirt also fits impeccably. You look amazing!

The pink is TDF on you - both color and fit. Love it tucked into the skirt! All of these look like workhorses for professional clothing, and will be versatile for you.

Ugh, alterations cost a fortune. If only I had the time to do them myself!

Sorry, but a red shirt is NOT interview appropriate, not in my book, and not for the first interview. Neither is black. You need a good white blouse. And you also need a jacket that fits properly, for both the skirt and the pants. This combo is lovely and is great for work once you have got the job, but I would suggest acquiring a well fitting white shirt. Then you will be set. I interview a lot of people and I have seen some awful interview outfits over the years-it really matters.

Heehee, Elly - you'll be getting those "Oh, what do you know about clothing troubles! Look at her gorgeous figure! Everything you wear looks perfect, you can wear whatever you want!" type of comments when you are out wearing your new duds, for sure. Just grin and say thank you, no one wants to hear what it takes and they won't believe you anyway :)

That sucks about the interview. It is nice to see that your boss was upset, though! And when the next one comes up you can focus on interview technique, qualifications, etc. with no clothing distractions. Time and money well spent!

12-14 in tops and 6-8 in bottoms? Hello figure twin (ha-except i'm a couple inches shorter and bigger in the waist). Truly the best advice i can give is to learn how to sew, and/or learn how to do your own alterations. You can also research made to measure services, after factoring in the cost of alterations it may be worth the money. i've had a good experience with e-Shakti, and they have a wide variety of fashionable and basic clothing. There are other services out there online, and some tailors will do made to measure as well.

I also find that it's very important to acquire clothing with a plan, as you have here. When you are this hard to fit, things just don't fall into your lap and you need to think ahead so that you aren't left with gaping wardrobe holes. I am not kidding, recently i spent two whole years shopping for a pair of jeans and NOTHING WORKED. Finally, i started to learn how to sew my own and now have two pair plus the knowledge i need to make more. I just realized it makes more sense to put my time and energy into what i know will pay off. It's not as 'fun' as shopping on the spur of the moment, maybe....but it makes a huge difference in your day to day options in the closet, and in actualizing your personal style.

I'm 50 in May, and the only item that ever fit me 'off the rack' was my mom's wedding dress. It was made for her by my grandma, which explains that! Don't despair, just realize that a lot of what works for other people may not for you, and put your energy into what DOES work for you. Wow, i love that pink on you!! Happy Day, steph

I'm glad you like the hair Angie-- at first I was a bit shocked by it, but definitely agree the face framing layers are much better than the long and shapeless 'do I was rocking.

I agree, the sleeves are a little long, I do like them to reach the fleshy part of my thumb, but I have about 3/4 of an inch to play with--- the tailor pressed the french cuffs a bit lower than I had at home. Hopefully re-pressing them to my liking will take care of that. Otherwise I will shorten the sleeves. Plus, in day-to-day life I prefer to scrunch or roll my sleeves most of the time.

I do like pink! Especially deep or hot pink-- once it warms up a bit here I will have to pull out my pink midi skirt and pink day dress.

I need to hem the charcoal pants, but no worries-- PPL was my pet peeve before I ever found YLF! I think the black will be ok, since my oxfords are about 1/2 an inch higher than the shoes I had them on with.

It is a little short Angie (a bit below the shoulders with some shorter layers). I think mostly It is pulled/swept away in these pictures. I had very long hair until September or so, and then cut it and donated the length to a local operation that makes wigs for children with cancer (fine hair is in demand).

Elly, thanks for sharing photos and description of the tailoring results. It's very helpful for those of us considering what to get done. Your pics are inspiring - the effortlessness, lack of distractions, and sheer pleasingness, of the sight of custom fit clothes on somebody reminds me how worth it it is.

I love the pink shirt on you. And I never would have noticed you had large shoulders or bust. You've dressed in such a way that my eye takes in an hourglass figure.

Thank you ladies!

I really appreciate hearing that things seem to be a success. I had an awful search trying to find pieces.

The job situation is disappointing-- one week I get a notice that I am the most qualified of the applicants, the next week I'm getting "the call" that they filled the position based on other criteria. My poor boss was quite upset.

Claire-- you made me laugh--- I am not tiny! I'm 5'8" and the tops are a size 12-14! Over the course of this adventure I learned that no one cuts clothing for a lady with a 28G or GG bra size that also has long arms and broad shoulders. I do have a small waist though (26"), which is why I try to show it off, esp. if I'm not wearing something form fitting on the bottom. The halogen skirt is a 6, and runs big. The pants are both size 8.

IK-- thank you, you made me laugh and smile.

Sara-- it is indeed the ponte pencil everyone loves! Add me to the list, although I might have a hard time dressing it down for the casual environmental norm around here after the interview process.

Bummer about the interview!!! I'm so glad you got these great work appropriate clothes that are ready to go at a moment's notice though. You are a tiny little thing! Because of your measurements, I think the alterations made quite a difference in fit. I like the skirt with the shirt tucked in. I think you could leave either shirt untucked with the pants because the proportions change. Maybe a belt to show your waist (without being too bombshell of course)? I hope you get another interview somewhere and have the occasion to wear these really soon!
