Thanks you Anna Belle Elle Krish Christina Suz:-) I think I was thinking I could take some stuff that really needs to go the bin and wear it and toss it. I dont want to be committed tohaving to buy new stuff, and actually iwear black and jersey a lot so changing scarves, accessories even cardigans etc would add pop, easy to carry and easier to purchase. I recently found a cute but v well priced range of clothese here and hought i would take a lot of that. But my gear will have to go the distance and some pieces are starting to go in the seams here at home... 8 hour shoes are happening!

It is true you may not want to see those clothes again after 3 months. A sad thing. But you never know. And in the meantime, these are three months of your life. I say WEAR THE HECK OUT OF YOUR BEAUTIFUL CLOTHES.

In other words, take what you LOVE (assuming it is appropriate to the weather conditions and what you will be doing, obviously). Take the most loved items that will be practical in the circumstances. The ones that make you feel fab when you put them on. In fact, build your capsules around a few well loved items. And if you need more pieces to make them work well for this three month period (e.g. 8 hour footwear, outerwear, etc.) buy those pieces now. This is a quarter of a year we are talking about. A long time to feel miserable in substandard clothing!

I traveled for 5 months in a carryon. I packed a lot of black jersey knit in simple silhouettes - Eileen Fisher pants, skirts and tops. It was very boring - but did allow me to not worry about what I was wearing everyday. I was there to site-see and wanted to focus my attention on all the new things that were around me. All my pieces worked together and looked good coming out of the bag. I bought mostly new items because at the time I didn't have things that would be multi-purpose. Every piece had to be specifically chosen for maximum usability and practicality. I found scarves added an instant color update and were easy to pack.

I pack things that I am actually wearing, tested and proved. I second La Belle Demimondaine's suggestion for jewellery and may I add accessories: these are what will "feed" your creativity as days advance and you find yourself with the same pieces. Belts are very important for me, as they can change the way an outfit looks. But also clutches and purses - I always bring more than one, and often buy one on the trip too!

First and foremost: look at the coats/outerwear you are bringing. Can you create quickly and simply 2 or 3 different outerwear outfits? Does everything make you happy? Can you wear the purse(s) you are bringing with each one? Does the footwear agree with every one of them, in terms of colour, but also shape and leg length?

To decide on colours for your capsules, go from your toppers down. Which toppers are you bringing? Then the maximum number of tops that will go with these toppers, then a few very versatile bottoms that will go with almost everything.

Footwear is also very important, as it could make or break an outfit. AND for comfort. When travelling, we often must walk more than usual so bring 8hr shoes/boots. If you create a great outfit with 2hr shoes, you can be sure you'll end up not wearing that particular outfit. I know you probably know, but just a reminder.(It's a mistake I often made). I find that when I do this, it leaves me less choices on what to bring, which is a bit depressing but at the same time makes it easier. (I also know better what I really need!).

If you are bringing dresses or skirts, pay special attention to what you will wear on your legs and if it matches your footwear (including boots if you need them where you are going) and if you feel comfortable in them. I like to bring dresses that can serve as tunics over jeans or pants or leggings as well as being worn on their own with either tights, nylon or nothing.

If you're packing light then I'd pack things that are very versatile for remixing & that don't stand out. What I mean is the same blue jeans everyday wouldn't be noticed as the same jeans but red or white ones would. Also dark colors hide dirt. Things that don't crease. I wouldnt take anything that I didn't like or feel good in because it's going to be all you've got.

I found your previous posts on your upcoming travel - and while I envy you your opportunity for travel, I don't envy you your task in packing!

I would have to echo what Annaj says - I pack my favorites, standbys that I feel great wearing. I pack a LOT of costume jewelry, patterned hosiery, a few favorite scarves, and I always always always pack one knock-out dress or skirt/top, hosiery, a clutch that lies flat and is easily packed, and some coordinating shoes - whether my trip is five days, or five weeks.

Since you intend to go carry-on, the extra shoes might be a bigger challenge or something you forgo altogether.

And I hope you will forgive my frankness, but lingerie that makes you feel sexy or naughty, is a great way to make those old standbys feel like new and exciting outfits, even if you're the only one who knows you've got 'em on!

It may be that you are so sick of everything at the end of your trip, that you really will want to toss it all, but I would say, put it all away for a month or two, then bring it back out and see how you feel

I've missed where you are going etc, so I can only offer general advice. I always pack my favourites when traveling, then look to add a few new pieces when I have the chance to shop while I am away. Will you have the chance to shop for a few things while you are away if your wardrobe starts to feel tired?

Still playing with my travel capsule... there are def some pieces that are non negotiable, but 1 I am having a mini change of season closet edit and 2 becoming painfully aware that 3 months with the same 16 pieces of clothing will mean I never want to see them again. Do you take pieces travelling that are evolving out of your wardrobe or pack faihfuls... I also don't want to feel shabby when I get there OR comitted to having to replace pieces en route etc... Any thoughts?
