vc, I have done that a couple times though not very recently. I guess that's kind of when I started wondering how much time everyone devotes to such things. Once a month seems to be the place to start. I do get intimidated going in, knowing full well I won't be purchasing anything and feeling a little guilty and out of my element. Would you reccomend Forever 21 or is that better for accessories? I also haven't checked out Banana Republic because it seems so pricey but it seems as though people have gotten some nice things there and not always at high prices.

I don't have any photo taking pointers, but wanted to say that I can relate to not having done a whole lot of shopping for clothes in awhile. One thing that I've started doing is going into different stores, and just trying stuff on - without actually looking to purchase anything. The reason I'm doing this is because I don't really even have a good feel for what my size is, and furthermore - that size could be different, depending on brand or store. This is sort of a bit of a research strategy on my part. There are lots of great online sales with all the major stores, but it's tough to know what to order if you haven't gone into the store itself to get an idea of how their clothing fits you.

Next time you get a chance, could you maybe pop into two or three stores that are somewhat new-ish to you and just try on some pants, a blouse, jeans, a dress - without any pressure to buy? Make a note of what styles and sizes seem to work for you in that particular brand or store. Then, you'll be able to shop online from home, having done this bit of 'pre-screening'. You'll shop before you shop, so to speak. This will rule out certain brands, stores and sizes in advance and make things easier over time.

I'm fair skinned with brown hair and light blue eyes. I've been leaning toward plum and turquoise, but I'm anxious to get some input from any of you gals as far as color and body shape when I get around to posting photos. Any photo taking pointers?

Welcome, Jean. Be sure to read Angie's suggestions for your body type and give some thought to which colors flatter and which don't. It can help you make decisions more quickly when going through clothing sites or the racks at a store.

Thank you ladies!
You all seem to identify! It does seem that the planets need to align in a particular order Chewy Spaghetti! You totally get it! And Queenie it sounds like you've had an experience or two like my own! My kids like to pretend that the clothing racks are ice cream shops and they take turns going in and taking orders for "ice cream". Hence I do not go shopping with them very often (for myself anyway)!
Anyway, all of your suggestions are helpful and give me some direction to go in.
I am not familiar with ASOS so I will check that out along with being more intentional with Clearance sections and having a list. I have not looked online a lot lately though I do have updates emailed to me from Shopstyle.
I feel like I should be going into the mall to at least try on clothes and get a feel for what works but I get overwhelmed and intimidated when I go in...so again I will have to have that list with me and be very focused. I had not considered keeping shopping carts full...I'm not familiar enough yet...but I think I will try that!
I haven't really wanted to ask a friend as dropping 4 kids off to anyone other than Grandma seems unfair when most of my friends only have 2! (Although I could maybe do it when the older kids are in school--revelation here!) My husband does try and help but I think I will start making a point of scheduling it on the calendar far enough in advance for the days he has off. My time away is usually on a week night and by the end of the day I don't really want to shop.
I also see it as a challenge and kind of fun. I just feel frustrated sometimes because I'm still building a foundation and I'm not sure what piece(s) I should be looking for next. Angie your MOTG formulas are just what I need to give me direction! And the latest challenges gave me inspiration too.
Thanks to every one of you for the response and welcome! Being my first post, I was excited every time I got a new reply!
I have a couple Goodwill purchases I'm unsure about so maybe I will take the plunge and post those in the next week.
Jean

Jean, do you have a friend that you could swap kid care with once a month? I had 4 kids in just under 5 years so I know what it's like- absolutely impossible. Kids running through the clothing racks, arguing with eachother, hungry, whiny, tired....
I really encourage you to find a way to have a few hours to yourself if only once a month.

Welcome!!!!!!!!!!
Oh.. shopping with four kids under eight.. that is close to impossible. The best way is to shop alone, no hubby and no kids, maybe you can convice you hubby to stay with the kids!

You have my sympathies Jean, shopping with children in tow is never easy. I actually avoid the shops in favour of a more relaxed online experience. I like to visit ASOS outlet plus other sites which have a permanent clearance area.

I am always shopping with a particular item in mind and stick to my budget. Sometimes it will take a month to find an item I like, on budget and suitable for my body type. Rather than view this as a hindrance I relish the challenge.

It has been slow progress rebuilding my wardrobe in this manner but there are no wardrobe orphans and my finances are not stretched.

Good luck in the rebuilding of your wardrobe and welcome to the forum.

Wow Jean- welcome to the board!
My shopping is pretty random- when all of the planets align correctly, I can get time without the kids, money to actually buy something, and find what I need. I shop online a lot, even though I don't usually buy what I shop for (if that makes any sense). I have shopping carts full of stuff at many different online retailers, but I only purchase when I can get a really good deal. I think that is part of how I realize a good deal when I see it. I'm on a Goodwill budget, too. Ironically, where I live I can get a better deal on the clearance racks at Target, Kohl's and Old Navy or discount outlets like Ross, DD's Discounts and Susie's Deals than I can at the second hand shops. I also frequent JC Penney's, Banana Republic and Gap Outlets, Ann Taylor Loft, NY & Co. and Express.

Hello! I'm loving this website and everyone's style!
I have four children 8 and under. I don't get many opportunities to shop alone so I've been wondering from you MOTGs:
How often do you shop? How much time do you allow? What are your favorite stores? How often do you bring your children? Any shopping strategy advice is welcome. I am on a Goodwill budget and I'm starting from scratch for the most part as a good part of my wardrobe for the last 9 years has been maternity!
