Aida and Janet,
Thanks so much for your insights and comments. I did work with a designer on this redesign -- I would not have known where to start without one. We worked through several images, logos, and taglines before settling on this.

Aida, I'll check through the logo library -- which I just got access to -- to see if she offers what you are talking about. Really helpful.

And Janet, we had played with kerning and leading, and I think proportion and centering is what drove the final product. But again, thanks for your help.

Here's the back of the business card. I love how this turned out, too. (Note: all these pics are screenshots; not ideal for quality, I know.)

(Eventually my website will be redone.)

I love it. I saw the WHO too! I appreciate the really solid, thoughtful concept and execution -- did you work with a designer on it? This is part of what I used to do for a living (publications and identity design). If you don't mind some unsolicited advice on some really small tweaks, as a designer, I might tighten up the kerning in "Research" just a smidge, and tighten up the leading (space between the lines) between the tag line and the logo, but that's really minor stuff. Those are small details that may help the logo read as a unit, especially when you size it up or down, but it looks great as is, so please don't fret it -- like I said, this is what I did for a long time, so please forgive me if this comes off at all pedantic. Tightening up that spacing in "Research" might throw off the balance by moving the owl too close to center (without actually centering it), so I might be totally wrong.

Great job! Doesn't it feel good to have a fresh new identity that really conveys you and your brand?

Oh your logo is so nice! What a great job--the owl pictograph is very pretty.
It sounds like you put a lot of thought into your logo.
I have an itty-bitty side 'business' and it took me months just to pick a font!

Looks really good Vivian. I saw the same thing as Anna, it's a great subtly clever detail.

Do you have a version with simpler facial features for very small sizes, if those sizes are needed? You may need two versions if that's the case, one with the detail for normal/larger sizes and one with a simplified face for small sizes. If you do have a need for very small sizes, that version may also need to have slightly bolder text as well.

Love the logo - and especially the story behind it and it's metaphors. Perfect!

Not long ago we were driving into town (very hilly winding roads here) and in front of us was something on the road that looked odd. At first glance it seemed to be a large rock. But it looked more like a bird. It was a baby owl - in the middle of the road. We pulled over and I got out with a white towel I happened to have in the car and I walked up to it and put the white towel over it (I was fearing it was already dead). I picked it up and felt it's huge claws move in my hands between the towel. Funny, I hadn't even thought of it trying to bite or scratch me until I already had it in my hands. It was warm and breathing with no obvious sign of damage. We don't have animal rescue out here so I just did the best I could by moving it off the road and down the hillside in a pocket of large rocky outcropping.

Later that day we stopped at the same spot to see if it was still there. There was no sign of the owl OR the white towel anywhere to be found.

It feels a bit like one of those odd dreams you have. I still wonder what became of the owl.

Some time ago, I posted for some ideas/feedback regarding a logo/tagline rework for my qualitative research practice. Well, the whole effort is done now, and I thought you might like to see where we landed.

After a lot of agonizing, I decided to use an owl in my logo. On the day I left my last job working for someone else 8 years ago, I drove beneath a barred owl sitting on a phone wire. It was a snowy day and I felt that owl was the totem for my new future. The owl is also a great symbol for my work: great vision, acute listening skills, stays up late at night, etc.

Anyway, here it is.....
