Oh, and Elly, check 6 pm for Fryes -- they often have some there as well!

So glad it is going well so far.

I don't know if you would fit well into Zara but they have a fun knit blazer. I tried it on in store and it fit well in my regular Zara six (S). And it has some stretch and give to it.

My Frye Engineer boots and Docs have been the best buys for non-slip, comfortable, and durable.

ETA: I saw you are considering a pair of Fryes -- the engineer 8R in the oily leather is quite often on sale on amazon, worth checking out.

And the Bowery super soft crews I posted a rec for those yesterday -- they are great this year.

Fly London looks great-- very ninja like and comfy. However, I am afraid the thick wedge soles might actually be a tripping hazard at work because of the stairs. I still do a lot of standing, but this building has wood floors (or marmoleum over wood). I climb 7 flights of stairs to get to my new "office" and go up and down all day. The building is historic and some of the floors slant a bit or have odd thresholds.

My Fly London sandals were GREAT on concrete for my fussy feet, and their booties have the same soles. I'm hoping for a sale, but the one I want is out in my size. See Nordstrom.com. I've lost the padding on the bottom of my feet and have numerous other foot issues, so maybe you have more leeway in footwear that works for you.

Congratulations, Elly. You've worked long and hard to get to this point.

Suz is spot on in recommending Ceit's outfits as a good starting point; she looks amazing but with a good sense of what is practical, as well.

My only two cents would be to concentrate on fit because even a simple pair of jeans and a T-shirt can look amazing if both items are chosen carefully. And, although it might sound counterintuitive for someone on a limited budget, I'd also pay attention to quality, especially if you need to wash your clothes frequently. That doesn't necessarily translate to more expensive; my $8 Joe Fresh T-shirts hold up better to frequent washing than some shirts which cost 10x as much.

Thank you for your replies-- I got some excellent ideas, including places to look for blazers.

I'm sorry that I wasn't back before today, but I was home for only a little more than a day before I had to dash off to Chaco Canyon for my program.

Friday I had my first day of work. One of my supervisors was wearing jeans and a tee shirt (but in her defense, they were both nice and she had been painting) and the other was wearing the same outfit from the Friday before (IDK, perhaps it is her Friday outfit). Dress code was specified as even more casual than I expected. I believe I could comfortably get away with fun, youthful, edgy stuff so long as I look put-together. It was also very cold in one space, but the other space is room temperature, so layers will be important. Also, I do think wash-ability will continue to be important, at least for the first part of the project and many of the collections I am moving need a through cleaning.

I echo knit blazers as looking polished but casual, and easy to move in.
Check Nordstrom's site for Halogen and Olivia Moon for inexpensive versions if you want to get one now and think about investing more later. Now, they don't layer well over thick sweaters. Also there are a ton of knit moto's on the market, if that style works for you. And don't forget cardigans--it they suit you--again, the knit is very action-friendly but provides that extra piece for more polish.

So one "look" for you might be thinner layers + topper such as knit blazer, casual tweedy blazer, or cardigan, and another could be chunky oversized sweater over pants with finishing touches like a scarf, or jewelry if you wear, and nice boots to look polished. I think the style of sweater makes a difference in how well it stands alone--good fit (can be oversized but not "sloppy") or with some modern element, multimedia, for interest, and chunky or textured, meaning, if it has some "presence", then I think it makes a very nice smart casual/business casual outfit, more so that just any crew sweater over jeans.
For pants, jeans if you like and can wear them to work, but maybe a couple pairs of jeans and a couple not-jean washable trousers, something a bit upgraded from a chino--style depends on you, whether skinny or bootcut or what. I just got some tweed-type pants from Eddie Bauer in a washable cotton, kind of a not-jean jean. I think layers could work well for you for the chill, and don't forget "underlayers"--thin silk types--so not all of your warmth has to come from the jacket. A leather vest might look fab, if not too rugged.

Wow, Elly, congratulations!! This is wonderful news!

I am thinking that Ceit's WIWs might be great inspiration for the kinds of jackets and tops she wears. Although you might want different styles for your body type, the fabrications might be good, and I know she has a lot of luck at Gap, sometimes Club Monaco and Zara, and Banana Republic, and does a lot of the shopping online by necessity.

I think a great a versatile pair of boots could be a useful purchase. And for jackets, definitely try a knit blazer or moto.

I am totally in love with knit blazers right now so I agree that they could work really well for you. Also, there was a thread recently about dressing for field work that could be useful for you - although you probably don't have to go quite that rough and ready.

I wonder whether knit/ponte blazers might be a good idea - less formal than regular blazer, more freedom of movement, good for layering in chilly workplaces. I have had some success with Caslon, Gibson, and Halogen blazers from Nordstrom.

Thanks for the congratulations!

Color pallette -- lots of dark neutrals, black, dark greys, navy, dark browns--- not afraid to mix black and brown, black and navy. My leather jacket is black, one of the button downs is, several of my layering tees, and my slacks are a heathered grey/brown.

Other than that, I have a navy top, a black top, and a pink top, and navy and charcoal layering tees. Olive green shoes. I look good in deep purples, deep pinks, tuquoise and cobalt blues, oranges, camel, forest and olive greens. My glasses are black and deep purple, but I wear contacts frequently. I don't wear pastels or light greys.

Diana, I love the idea of a blazer like that-- those are probably just a bit out of my price range.

Thanks ladies---

To answer your questions Deb, I will be in and out of the public eye daily at work, but shouldn't be interacting with the public so much as passing through public spaces. During my interview, one of my supervisors was wearing chino-type slacks and a blouse, the other a sweater, vest, and scarf with jeans. There will be events I will have to attend, but I think I have those basics covered with my interview skirt, slacks, etc. My main holes are in comfy footwear and tops/toppers that look put-together for work. I have a sort of rugged menswear asethetic, but I am really loving the slightly oversized pullover sort of thing that is going on this season. The other thing I forgot to mention is that jewelry has to be minimal at work, with no dangling necklaces and no bracelets or rings. So I like to have tops or layers that add a bit of interest. Scarves are okay.

Congratulations! I think you need a plaid or tweed blazer. Maybe a riding style one, like a Smythe. Or something more professorial with leather elbow patches. Probably woolen. It will look less businessy than a regular blazer but still a little more dressed up than a sweater and jeans.

I am a collections curator and technician at a university, and my staple outfits are jeans, boots, nice tops and jackets. You Should be able to come up with a nice workwear capsule that is useful but also beautiful.

So excited for you! Glad to hear that you'll be traveling to some locations with good shopping, too. What kinds of tops/sweaters/jackets are you looking for? More of what you have, or are any style tweaks going on?

Wow, Elly, this is so exciting! Do you think you will need clothes for public appearances or will all of your workload be in the back rooms?

Dear YLFers--

I am excited to report that I've just accepted a position with a local museum working as a curatorial assistant and collections' manager and photographer as part of their project to move, re-house, and update their collections' databases. The position is a 2-year, grant-funded position. I begin part-time next week, and full-time as of December 11th. For those of you who have been around for a while, I am sure you remember that I've been looking for something more consistent than the contract work I have been doing. I'm very excited.

Now, as part of going back to work I need to do some shopping! My budget is still fairly low, especially for the first few months (and non-profits aren't known for their pay scales! LOL). The dress code is what we call "Colorado Casual" -- which is similar to Angie's "smart casual" but perhaps even a bit more casual--- clean, neat, put together-- but not as many blazers and heels. In the museum world, pants and jeans tend to be the most practical choice and sturdy secure shoes are a must. Also, collections facilities tend to be quite chilly, especially in the winter. Washable is good, since collections tend to be a bit on the dusty side.

I have one really good pair of "museum shoes" that I wear on days where I will be standing on concrete, and 2 or 3 pairs of bootcut jeans, a leather jacket, several longsleeve layering tees, 3 button downs, a blouse, and a pair of wool slacks.

I'm thinking I could definitely use 1-2 more pair of shoes, some more tops/sweaters, and jackets/heavier sweaters.

I will be taking a trip in February to Phoenix (where I have access to a Nordies), and will be in Alburquerque (with gap, J crew, Ann Taylor, etc) between now and December when I go to work full-time. Other than that, shopping has to be online for me.

Would anyone like to help me out with advice or suggestions?
