I actually own the red scarf, and have worn it with chocolate brown and charcoal grey. There is a subtle olive green stripe in the scarf too, so it looks really good with dark olive or a military green. I tried it with a terracotta jacket, but I found that the brick color in the scarf matched TOO well. It sort of vanished. And of course it works with black or cream. Not that I needed another scarf, but this one was a really good purchase.

Congratulations! How exciting. I agree the first scarf will help to create a casual vibe. The colors in the second one are beautiful, though. I love the soft look of the fabric and the colors.

Congratulations on your new job! I think you will have fun experimenting with a more casual style. Oth scarves are lovely, but I think the fringe on the first one gives it a slightly more casual look. Gray and navy are great colors to work with. Brick red or dark orange would look good with both of those colors. I like the suggestion of wearing lighter, or metallic shoes and bags with the darker colors. Please post some pics!

Gretchen scarf #1 reads more casual to me too. Having just read Sal’s Statement Workhorses thread, I have always loved the teal sheath dress you own. Teal, cinnamon, burgundy and navy all work well together and with denim.

Congratulations on the new job, I am looking forward to seeing how you transition to a more casual aesthetic.

Congratulations on the new job! That's wonderful news!

I love the idea of a scarf as your "idea generator."

I wear a lot of denim and navy remains one of my core dark neutrals. I find they work together just fine, with completer pieces. My other neutrals are grey (charcoal for dark and pale grey as light) and white.

I wear these with red, fuchsia, sometimes teal, cobalt -- colours that pop a bit more.

Thank you! I’m excited, and love a chance to play differently with my wardrobe.

Right now I’m leaning toward focusing on the first scarf as it reads more casual to me, and I agree the colors will keep me focused. I will definitely be back with questions and pictures as I play with this!

Congratulations on the new job! I think the second scarf woukd offer more versatility and you could combine it with lots of colours. What is your preference?

Congratulations on the new job! Yes, I think grey and navy are excellent neutrals for you. Both scarves are lovely. I love to see a darker navy with a burnt orange, which also complements grey. Brick red, dusty pink, cinnamon, pine green, and mustard could also work. I like slim cat's suggestion of metallic shoes/sneakers. My metallic footwear gets the most wears of all of my footwear collection.

Congratulations on new job!
Love the idea of grey ( including dark grey, charcoal ) as another neutral color. Scarfs are great - slight preference for first one since it's maybe easier color wise as a starting point. But both scarfs are fab!
I like @Sal' idea of lighter shoes and bag to go with navy outfit.
Maybe metallic shoes/sneakers ( pewter, silver, rose gold ) as a fun neutral option?..

Well done on the new job!!

I love the scarves - stunning with navy or grey. I love the cool warm combinations right now.

I actually like a navy top with dark denim but then choose lighter shoes and bag to add some contrast. I think making a few capsules with your existing wardrobe and seeing where the gaps are could be fun (and the forum could help)

Congratulations on the new job. I love both scarves. The second one could be the basis for the most color and includes navy, your neutral, but the first scarf is very pretty too. Which do you like wearing most?

Congratulations on the new job, Gretchen! You can’t go wrong with a white button down and a gorgeous scarf (like the one you show), and there is no reason you can’t wear navy or grey with jeans - or coloured jeans for that matter.

Hooray, I have a new job! Omigosh I have a new job in a casual environment (if we ever return to offices).

While I was interviewing (pre-quarantine, and recent zooms), I noticed how casual the looks of the team were. The men were mostly in button-downs and jeans. The women in blouses and jeans.

So this got me thinking...if jeans are a major essential, should I change up my primary colors to have more contrast? I don't think I'll ever give up Navy as my primary neutral, but maybe now would be a good time to look at some other colors? Maybe keep Gray as my #2 neutral but express it more in different textures instead of suit material.

I'm also considering doing a French 5 piece in a warmly saturated color - maybe deep coral, or a red brown - but focused on casual styles to start to dress-down my typical work wear. Maybe play off one of these 2 scarves for inspiration. Any suggestions?
