I do think this is one of those things that age comes into play. (and because of age, probably body shape too). The boyfriend jeans do look cute, on youthful girls who are small, slim hipped, and can get away with extra fabric covering their bodies. The reality though, is that not too many women have that luxury.

As far as the ripped jeans...again, it's an age thing. If I walked out of the house in ripped jeans, I'd look like I was either trying to look young, or in the middle of a house project. Now my 12 year old daughter just picked out a pair of "patched" jeans. I am not crazy about them--but she'll outgrow them in a few months which is fine since her taste changes just as quickly. (She has surpassed me in height, officially--I am thrilled, she's probably going to be 3 inches taller than me--lucky girl!) Anyway, she's 12, ripped and patched jeans are fine. I'm 40...ripped and patched jeans on me--uh no thanks.

I like the look as long as they aren't rolled up at the bottoms. I don't currently have any, but I've had a few pairs in the past, and talk about comfy!!!

My absolute favourite were a pair I nicked from my Dad about 15 years ago, I think I wore them until they basically fell apart! After that I bought a pair of men's Industrie jeans that were kind similar to this. To me they seem like a casual version of wide-legged trouser jeans. Maybe that would be a more stylish option? Tanya you some trousers jeans don't you? I remember thinking they looked great on you!!

I LOVE the boyfriend jean/ distressed look. I've sported it on and off for decades :). It's so retro and takes me back to the time when the only jeans available were men's levi's 501's button fly..."shrink to fit"'s at they were known. Women were supposed to be "ladies" and wear skirts and dresses, ALL the time...school and work, AND play. So glad we have more choices now! It's actually very hard to bleach jeans enough without passing out, I would rather pay someone else to do it! I think what you pair the jeans with makes all the difference, shoes and tops/jackets....and whether it's appropriate to the occasion. It's really great all the variety in denim we have now...all kinds of fit and washes to choose from. Dark wash has been my norm, but it's fun to mix it up now and then.

I'm not crazy about either of the looks either. I especially dislike the way Katie Holmes is wearing them. The last time I rolled by jeans was back in the late 80's and early 90's. The idea of paying full price for pre-ripped jeans is just ridiculous to me.

Bella - I like your version better. The only thing is that there looks like there may be too much material rolled at the bottom, but otherwise it seems like a fun and casual look.

I think those jeans are adorable too, Maya.

If I were going to try the distressed, rolled-up look, I'd do it with a pair of thrifted jeans. Why pay $175 when I can get the same look for $5? That said, I don't think this look is for me (unless I'm at the beach, wading in the ocean), although I have seen the odd celeb wearing it well. I think one of those pics someone posted showed Jessica Alba wearing them with shades and a yellow scarf, and I think she looks cute. She's very tiny, very feminine, and very young-looking, so that may be partly why she pulls it off. I like Katie Holmes' version less.

Count me out too. I guess for me it's sort of a been there done that kind of thing. I definitely had a few distressed jeans back in the day and I do remember wearing rolled jeans (although I think at the time the trend was reverse fit rather than the loose fit or boyfriend jean as they are calling these) at some point with huge oversized sweaters. I think I would just look like a big blob if I were to attempt this look now.

I actually tried this look just once over the summer when Katie Holmes supported it look for the very first time. I didn't know about YLF at the time so I couldn't post a picture then. Maybe you can tell me if it works:

I think that's the way to go if you're going to sport this look, Antje. I don't mind paying a higher price for nice, versatile jeans that are flattering and fit perfectly, but to pay top dollar for old ripped jeans is ridiculous. I could get a pair of COH Elsons for that price!

Oh my goodness, I can't believe they are charging $175 for these at J Crew! Now that part is crazy. I am almost morally opposed to selling jeans that deliberately look old for so much money. Yikes.
If I find a good way to wear the bf jeans look, it'll be with truly old jeans (from my own or a friend's closet or Goodwill.)

I'll agree with Tanya--I don't like the look at all on Katie Holmes and other stars. They take it to the extreme with the ultra baggy jeans and holes and things. I think it makes them look way heavier then they are, and also kind of schlumpy.

I think the way J. Crew does it with their models is cute, but not really attainable for most women. I'll be taking a pass on this trend as well (I actually tried it once in the fitting rooms at J. Crew, and it made my legs look 3 inches long).

I like the boyfriend jean look but I don't think I can wear it. Three years ago I bought a "cowboy" jean at JCrew that looks pretty identical to one they're showing this season (and mine cost less than half what they're charging now!). I still think the look is cute, but not on me. My jeans are currently in my "hold" pile to decide on in the next year.

I might be the odd one out, but I actually kinda like the boyfriend jeans (liked them already months ago when the first pictures of Katie Holmes in hers surfaced) and I've been secretly played with the look in front of my bedroom mirror. I haven't been too happy with the results yet; the biggest issue are the jeans themselves. I don't have a boyfriend and my girlfriend's jeans are too small. I can't bring myself to buy old-looking jeans new at a store, so for now I've just tried this with a very old pair of mine that I've had around to wear for "house projects". They don't really fit the bill 100%. But anyway, I could see the potential of the look, when I combined them with a short fitted blazer, top that peeks out underneath the blazer, and a big chunky necklace. And for shoes I tried heeled oxfords, though that didn't look quite right. I plan to experiment further and if I get happy with the results I'll post a picture. I won't be offended if it doesn't become a YLF-approved look, promise! It's certainly not smart casual and not a "work look", but I can see myself enjoying it as a trendy/funky look for going out.

Ripped jeans were actually in around 2001-2002. There was this whole punk revival thing which made torn jeans and plaid pretty popular. I liked it then because I was 16-17 and had a punky style myself, but I didn't like that it had become so commercialized. Kind of went against the original purpose. I did acknowledge that they looked kind of stupid on adults though, and I still feel that way.

I don't like the rolled up boyfriend jeans either, but I actually like them full length. It's a cute casual look and somehow reminds me of the beach (or shore as we say here in NJ).

Actually, I can make one exception for the rolled up version (and I know no one is going to agree with me). I do think they look kind of cute on a tall, boyish figure with heels. I saw them worn like this on the J Crew site some time ago and it worked for me, but I think it's a bad look for most people. They basically have the same issues as capris do. But I think most of the time it just looks like you're about to go wade in some dirty water.

Let me add to this list: I have been seeing some clownishly huge bellbottoms popping up for a while now. They're skin tight at the thigh and then balloon out into a 26" leg opening. They looked ridiculous.

I have noticed a couple of really bad (in my opinion) jeans trends recently, mostly worn by celebrities, but starting to go mainstream, that is being worn by real people on the street.

Trend #1: So called boyfriend jeans, too big, slouchy, usually distressed, and often worn rolled up:

http://stylebakery.com/celebst.....atrend.jpg

Trend #2: jeans that are so distressed that they are actually seriously ripped:

http://stylebakery.com/celebst.....stripe.jpg

Of course, there are also hybrids of the two present. And I have seen some acid wash jeans too.

I am curious, what do the forum members think about this? Would you wear them? Is it just me, maybe my eye hasn't adjusted to the look yet? Even if they become Angie- approved ( which I doubt), I would never ever wear these.
