Good on you staying positive Banana! If this is in your family then you probably don't need more information or help dealing with it, but I found this site very helpful http://www.womenshairlossproject.com both to find out about what is going on, possible treatments and their side effects as well as lots of inspirational stories. Have you had a cut yet? Are you happy with it?

It is sometimes called female pattern baldness. I don't really like that term, though, since I have no intention of going bald! Unfortunatley, in my case, it is a genetic thing - my sister suffers from it as well.

Thanks again!

Bless your heart...I don't think people realize how truely difficult this problem is for women.

I would bring the length up to chin and add some layers...anything to give the hair some lift:) bst of luck , and post the results if you are comfortable:)

We will happily cheer you on!!!

Is this gender related thinning?

Thanks for the replies! I have been hesitant to post a pic because I tend to shy away from cameras due to my hair.

I have been told that I have androgenetic alopecia and have been using Rogaine for about 9 months. I am seeing results, but not yet in the front (where the thinning is the worst). I am also on a medication that helps block the hormones responsible for the thinning. It can take quite a while to work, but I am trying to stay positive and hope that it will "kick in" soon. I am throwing everything I have at the problem and am hopeful that things will get better.

I'm getting my hair colored soon and will try some layers as you suggested. Do you think cutting some length would help? It's to my shoulders and I was thinking about going up to my chin.

Bannana, Sorry, I lost this post for a day.

This is truely the most difficult problem I encounter. Simply because I cannot correct it. Is it Alopecia, or Alopecia Areata, or just thinning hair because there is treatment for that.
I have had clients who have used Rogaine with good results.
And I am not a medical doctor , although I know that there are some medical conditions, as well as medications that can contribute to thinning as well as recent surgery's.

A little difficult for me to comment on a hairstyle...not seeing you or your hair, adding layers and a shorter length sound like a good idea in this case

Hi Banana! (That is what my sister calls me!!) I kind of understand the problems with thinning hair. I have alopecia. So far bald patches have always been underneath at the back, (and they have grown back) but each time I wonder if this is the time it all falls out! I would have thought a slightly shorter style would give hair more body, and doesn't colouring hair thicken it a little? Over to Taylor...

Hi -

I've been reading YLF for a few months and am so impressed with how much you all help each other out.

I've been inspired to makeover my 40-something self after reading all of your posts and Angie's fabulous advice.

Here is my question/problem. I have extremely fine/thinning hair and have no idea what to do with it. My scalp is pretty visible on the top of my head and my part is very wide. It is currently shoulder length and I am tired of fighting with it. I've been keeping it long on the top because I am afraid that cutting any type of layers would only make it look thinner. I am ready to do just about anything to make it look better.

Does anyone have any ideas for a flattering style? I have a full, round face and my hair is brown with reddish/blonde highlights. Thanks!
