Do they ever say why, L'Abeille, why you can get a transplant but not the meds to make it work?

I wonder why bother with the surgery then. And then if they stopped doing surgery, they could get rid of hospitals and surgeons and rubber gloves even... the cost savings would be even more enormous. And the benefit to society - why a lot less mouths to feed! Less trucks and truckers hauling food from place to place.

I personally would have found it much simpler if they sent me home to slip into a coma and die in a week then to have erratic medical care, where I can see this leading to various amputations, cutting little bits off slowly until I'm finally finally dead. I find it very strange.

I suppose they would rather I take the decision then make it themselves. But then no one will let you go sleep in a box and go into your coma under the freeway either. Someone always takes you to ER where it starts all over again and you get yelled at for 'not taking care of yourself'.

Ahaha ha! I make myself laugh. I have my freeway picked out, but haven't found the right cardboard box yet

I am immeasurably grateful for our Canadian health care system. My CCU stay, heart catheterization, and 10 weeks of cardiac rehab--my only $ worries were how much work I would miss. But my meds and glucose test strips, those I pay for myself, because our insurance (for medications and peripherals) is through an employer if offered, or through the government if on income assistance, and for everyone else it's the private plans with the built-in exclusions.

And I have had to fight, not always successfully, to get the Nasonex, test strips, and anti-rejection drugs covered for my own patients.

Rachy, what a run around you're getting. You have to laugh, right, 'cause otherwise...
But don't invoke your right to die just yet - we need you here! You always give me a chuckle.
Though today I am even more grateful for our Australian health system. Even though everyone still complains here.

That's a good point, Echo.

The ACA tried to make insurance more maintenance, so in that sense we have had maintenance since it passed. Before that, if anything was wrong with you that needed maintenance, you couldn't get insurance or were kicked off. COBRA was put in place, but that was collapsing if you ask me when the economy tanked and people went so long without finding jobs they could get a new plan with.

ACA itself was based on the idea of people who don't use healthcare to buy it anyway - that's an insurance concept. One of the reasons it's been problematic. Employer-provided insurance is the same thing, come to think - same pooling concept. Insurance is for the healthy. Preventive care is once a year to a GP for a weigh in. When s/he finds something, the process of getting kicked off begins.

One thing that interests me is the complaint about rising premiums since ACA. My premiums were always going up like that. When I worked for my English boss in our micro enterprise, we had the same problems as a company. The uptick has been on a consistent track for 30 years for me. I don't see that ACA made it worse. It was always going to be as bad as it is now.

I'm thinking the differences between states must be radical. (And that California has been subsidising a lot of the country. We get much less back from our contributions to the Federal level than other states; I do know that...haha. Attack attack on all y'all )

I have to take issue with the idea that health maintenance is more expensive. It is certainly less expensive than NOT having maintenance care. For example, childhood shots are less expensive than hospitalization for treating disease; a pill prescription is less expensive than pregnancy; a healthy pregnancy is less expensive than a preemie in the NICU; proper care of high blood pressure is less expensive than a stroke or heart attack, and so on. Catastrophic coverage like one has for one's home is not enough when it comes to health.

Sort of health maintenance. But it's been added on to the insurance concept like a rider - like a rider hanging off the side of a country jitney. My now former diabetologist was so tired of the shebang. It was making her tired of being a doctor. She was the one who told me to get away and go with my new company. My new company is on the maintenance model more.

The US does not have health insurance. What we have is maintenance plans. Insurance is what there is for cars and houses - if/when a catastrophe strikes, the insurance pays out. Oil changes, HVAC repairs, and other regular maintenance is paid out of pocket. Contrast that with what passes for health insurance here - people want everything covered, including preventive care. That's a maintenance plan.

What I'm hoping is I won't have to do battle every month with the new company. I think I went half of last year with my previous company without my meds because I had to get an exception EVERY time.

Ok: This is what I think. Other countries have health CARE and the US has health INSURANCE. Insurance is a form of gambling: the company bets you won't ever need healthcare and you bet you will. Their job really is to kill you off because you really won't need it then.

Oh. My. Gosh. Crazy! And crazy making. That's just evil mad. Organ rejection! And c'mon, Flonase and Nasonex. Those are both so old, no one should care anymore.

I talked to this pharmacy rep today about transferring my meds. She spent the whole time trying to sell me on a particular glucometer. All the plans prefer this meter even tho it's harder to test with it. Let's just say there's a company with a really good sales dept that locked up the market. And the girl I talked to was so crazy. Kept talking about 'daily' supply. To the point where she was saying 300 test strips would cost the same as 600. How come I can't get a job where I make really good money for being confused and confusing?

Jus' askin'...

It can really be ridiculous. I've often thought the same thing: is the way they're doing things really more cost-effective?

I had a friend whose post-organ transplant immunosuppressive drugs unexpectedly got denied by her insurer (it was a mix-up; she'd gotten them many times before). Rather than just find a way to cover the drugs, especially with her prior history, the insurance co. said she would have to wait until she went into organ rejection, then go to the ER where she would be able to have the drugs covered.

And the battle begins! Why, may I ask, is all the good stuff always off-formulary? Why do they always want me to use a glucometer that makes me stab myself three times as many times and use three times as many test strips? Why is every insulin delivery device that delivers half-unit dosages verboten and yet going low because of too much insulin means a trip to ER? Is it really more cost efficient?

Actually, even tho it's against my religion, I'm starting to believe in the right to die. This being tortured to death can't be ethical, can it?
