Marley, this dress looks great on you!! Maya, to me these are special occasion dresses. Cocktail parties, weddings, etc. Not everyday dresses but certainly dresses that would be worn for those special occasions. I think you can pull off a completely vintage dress for such an occasion. That is how I would wear it!

Oh my - I love Stop Staring dresses and already have 3 in my closet. I posted a pic of one (see pic below) that I wore to a holiday cocktail party at the Ritz just last month. I just went to a Stop Staring private dress party several weeks ago - we also have a boutique here in town that sells them and cannot keep them in stock! They are so much fun and if you pick the right style - they are extremely versatile. I have my eye on the Billion Dollar Babe in black - I tried it on a couple of weeks ago and it is unbelieveably flattering! Love this contest!

Good point about weddings and other things not counting. I guess I have attended so many weddings in the past year that I do consider them a regular occasion. I have had 8 close friends and 1 cousin married in 2010 alone and could have worn a dress like the purple one to each of the weddings (only one was a summer wedding, and it was at night, indoors) since most of the weddings were in celebration of friends from different facets of my life. Of course, not everyone has a lot of special occasions that such a dress would be appropriate for every year!

I will agree with you that many of these (the 4 especially) aren't "everyday" dresses--- but most full-skirted, very body conscious, or satin numbers are. I could definitely see wearing most of them to parties and events and a few have a much broader potential. I think that a "costume" is something that you have to be Lady Gaga or Dita Von Teese to pull off when not on stage. I think even the more dramatic styles could be worn by most ladies with a lot of confidence and the right accessories.

I think that you are saying that they are too dramatically retro, and not subtle/tweaked enough for you-- which is fine! I didn't have any luck finding a 60s equivalent though, although ModCloth usually has a lot of cute offerings.

Elly, I don't really associate proms and weddings and other once-in-a-lifetime events with any specific style of dressing. It's all about what you want to wear and what will bring you happy memories. I didn't want to go to my prom, but if I did, I would have probably pulled a Helena Bonham Carter.

I guess I'm in the minority but I just find these too literally vintage. There is no modern take on them. Simple subtle adjustments in length or detailing could have done wonders. At the very least they didn't have to style all of their models like Bettie Paige.

I guess it's increasingly obvious that I am not the target market here. Anyone know of a 60's equivalent?

Maya, maybe I am more "out there" than most, but I wore a dress similar to the third one (the red one) to my high school prom and then again to a wedding several years later when I was dating a man in the wedding party. It didn't have the architectural bit about the hips, but did have almost an architectural shawl collar detail. Mine was a bright olive green and I wore it with a pair black peep-toe slingback heels and a peridot (lime green) stone filigree bracelet. For prom i wore a wavy retro hair style and red lips, but went with a chignon and a natural look for the wedding. While "prom" isn't exactly real life, I looked very appropriate at the wedding sitting next to my then-bf and the ladies in the wedding party who were wearing long gowns-- still like a guest, but I didn't stick out like a sore thumb in the few wedding photos I was asked to be in.

I could also see many women (with the right body type) wearing the first dress as a cocktail dress. It could even be belted. Very modern in my opinion.

I think the purple dress would be appropriate for weddings and other occasions as well.

The fourth would look great on some of the pear shaped ladies (and others) and show off lovely collar bones, especially at dressy holiday parties.

Both of the dresses that were linked two by other forum members are very wearable too! I can see the navy one with some espadrilles or heeled strappy sandals on a date. The second floral one would go well to church with a cardi or as a hostess dress at a dinner party, amongst other things.

Sorry Angie. I am genuinely interested to see how people style these though. A simple one like the one Elly posted I can understand, but the ones in the actual competition are a bit OTT for me.

Elly, that is *precisely* the dress that I would choose for myself. High five! And because I am dressier than most, I'd wear it to a client meeting with dressy ballet flats. I hope that I can pull off that 40's pencil skirt length because I love it.

This isn't necessarily what I would pick-- but I can't imagine any "office" workplace or cocktail party that this wouldn't be appropriate at! So not costume-- even if the adorable mini-pins out there would have to shorten it!

I agree that not all styles are equally wearable, but I think it's important to not look at them 'in isolation', but try to see them combined with modern items and accessories. Add a bit of edge, these could be lots of fun. I also love it that many of these dresses are a bit longer than we are used to seeing in the shops, perfect for taller lasses too, yay!

I'm not sure if I can still pull off a halter-neck, but I'm very drawn to this dress:

I have a similar dress to "4" that IS vintage, and I've worn it to holiday parties and cocktail parties. The advantage of a a vintage look-a-like is that it would fit better, especially with regard to the bust darts. These are sometimes made for "bullet" bras in "real" vintage.

I'd wear "2" also, if it fit correctly....and "1" doesn't even really look vintage to me....

Ladies! What are you smoking? These dresses are *totally* wearable. Remember that you can choose any style from the site if you win. Some styles are more easily wearable than others. Add a modern edge - think out of the box!

High five, Jules. So glad that you can enter! I can see you in so many of these styles.

Beautiful dresses! But I'll save the contest for those who would actually be able to wear them.

The 4th one in Angie's post could be worn quite a bit I think.

Super Duper (as opposed to Dupa).

I personally would wear several of the dresses, horses for courses I suppose.
