Great thread, cjh! Enjoyed the observations and opinions.

FWIW, I see many, many people under 40 wearing jeans in Seattle, WA! They also wear leggings, joggers, cargos, yoga pants, pajama bottoms, and sweatpants. I'm nodding along with opinion that jeans are still very popular at almost every age, but are not the only casual bottom option. Variety is good!

I spent 2.5 weeks with my hip and fab 19 year old gooddaughter from South Africa over the holidays. She LOVES jeans, and wears them a lot in blue, white, and pink. She also loves to wear joggers, and big wide Nike sweatpants.

Personally, I am a jeans die-hard. I have many on trend and fashion forward pairs that I wear with great joy White jeans are my thing! That said, like Suz, I am a die-hard dressy pants wearer too. I wear dressy pants like jeans and get on with my day. I don't wear joggers, leggings, or Athleisure bottoms. I wear big wide sweatpants as daily loungewear.

This is so interesting! I love hearing about this. I have loved jeans for 50 years, starting about 1969 or 70, just the year you mention it started. And in light of what you've shared, it's also interesting that I've recently been gravitating more to ecru painters pants and khaki colored chinos. My mother and father, born in the teens and twenties of the previous century, never wore jeans. Oh, maybe my dad had some as a much older man to mow the lawn! Probably from LL Bean or the church thrift store where mom worked. I do notice softer pant options seem to be more popular with young people, and why not, jeans can be constricting and uncomfortable by comparison.

My son wears jeans a lot as everyday pants; my daughter sees jeans as a 'dressy' option whereas sweatpants are her every day go-tos. I agree with the comment that jeans are still here but just not the only casual choice ... they are part of the general change in what constitutes a certain level of dress, I'd say?

I agree with Val, that their era of dominance is over. When my DD1 and I went to the ballet on 2 December we did see at least one teenager in very baggy jeans. And on a 2-day holiday one working in a restaurant had the baggiest jeans we had ever seen!
But on the whole it seems maybe middle aged and up, to me. I have obviously lived through peak jean decades but have never been a huge jean fan, have often only owned one pair at a time and much prefer comfier pants. I will now keep a vague eye out! I would say that my children aged 32, 30 and 27 don’t wear them that much. I think son of 27 might not own any.

The 'young' girls in HK (guessing at ages when people-watching lol) were still wearing jeans here even in the heat of summer, but the baggier kind - boyfriend/ lantern/ peg leg etc. I do see lots of skirts & shorts on them all year round though (miniskirts & hotpants with puffer coats & boots is a thing on girls here, with puffy jackets & flipflops for guys - but I digress, lol).

I've noticed the boys wearing shorts and cargo pants much more though (if they do wear denim it's on jackets instead - the few male jeans I see seem to be more the statement JNCO kind or part of a particular aesthetic (e.g. deep black for visual kei), on people who likely aren't following mainstream trends).

As for myself, I'm an outlier in that I've never been comfortable in jeans (too many buttons/ zips/ bumpy belt loops/ small pockets/ stiff fabric) so I only wear them in specific situations (like in the dead of winter, outdoor activities &/ or festive season). I was never the 'throw on with a top & go' type to begin with. So it's funny (to me) that the younger generation have a similar mindset!

Very interesting! I wear jeans all the time. My daughters, 18, wear a mix of wide leg jeans and leggings. From my observation, many millennial age and older women around here still wear stretchy skinny jeans and also leggings. The jeans I see on younger women tends to be wide, baggy or loose flares.

In my area jeans are worn almost exclusively by men over fifty. While the manufacturing process was presented via podcasts etc, in a very unflattering way a few years ago, it's mostly about leggings.

I wore jeans daily, shorts in summer, long in cool weather unless I was wearing corduroy for years and stopped about ten years ago although I can't say exactly why. It's a lot harder to find pants and the "go with anything" factor is pretty much out the window.

I work in a school, and while I will grant that it is in a small, NOT fashion-forward town, I see middle and high school kids wearing jeans quite a bit. Grade 5 and younger? Almost never, on boys or girls. I doubt that dynamic is going to change suddenly when they enter Middle School next year.

I haven't worn jeans in ages, but I'm not under 40, either. I've never been a fan of jeans because they always hurt. From the time I was a skinny little kid to now (average to smaller woman), jeans have always been stiff and cut into my middle and have otherwise felt like they restricted my movement. I don't wear leggings as pants, but I wear lots of ponte pants and dresses/skirts.

Interesting . I was shocked that many young people find jeans dressy and appropriate wedding attire. I was shocked to see a groom’s father and some other family members dressed in overalls and jeans at a wedding and have noticed that young girls are often dressed in skirts and dresses while their mothers wear pants. At 77 I wear more white jeans than blue in the colder months.

My parents (now both dead, born in the 1920s!) never wore jeans. It was "slacks" for my mom, for casual, but also a lot of dresses/ skirts.

I didn't wear jeans until I was in my teens, because they would not allow it. :)

Here in Victoria, as well as in Vancouver, I see jeans on people of all ages except the over 80s (and even some on them.) On the young people (teens and 20s), styles are mostly baggy/ loose or wide legs (cropped and full length) and some are starting with the lower waist styles. Most are still in high waisted styles.

Middle aged men and women are wearing everything from skinnies to straights to looser cuts. It just depends on their style sensibility/ income bracket.

Having said that—I also see a ton of joggers, leggings, and other types of pant on both men and women and on people of all ages except the over 80s.

Speaking for myself, I've have a style shift towards more non-jeans, i.e. "dress pants" for casual wear! I wear my dress pants for work from home more often than I am wearing my jeans now!

When I do wear jeans, I get a ton of compliments on my wide leg full length versions. People also love and comment on my red velvet Colettes, which are wide leg crops.

Below, the pants I am wearing more often at home. I actually tend to wear my jeans more, this season, when I am going out and about!

I live in hope that the legging era is on the wane! Jeans no longer have a 'youth culture' vibe but are classics in the way that wool flannel pants are classic.

In Japan I saw trendy young people wearing jeans, but they were interesting (individualistic baggy cuts and deconstructed designs). Middle aged people were wearing classic straight-leg dark denim.

My 14-year-old DS wears shorts and Birks in summer and track pants and sneakers in winter as his preferred casual clothing. He has a formal school uniform and looks for comfort in his down-time clothing wearing minimal designs, everything needs to be understated and without embellishment, a very clean and crisp look. I cannot foresee him wearing jeans in the future especially as my husband and I wear jeans.

In thinking about it more, my parents never wore jeans - born 1939 and 1940. My Dad still doesn’t - he wears chinos, shorts and even now track pants. My Mum started wearing denim in the late 80s and then never stopped - they became her uniform.

My Dad and elder son don’t find them comfortable enough - my younger son is more interested in fashion so happy to experiment more.

Maybe it’s not that jeans are on their way out, but just that their era of dominance is over, and other kinds of casual pants get to coexist? Teens in my urban neighborhood are wearing jeans as part of their 90s looks. Joggers, leggings, skinnies, and long skirts also remain common.

I see plenty of jeans on younger adults (I don’t pay a lot of attention to what teens wear), but lots of other styles of pants as well. Plenty of leggings and athleisure too. Around here young men still predominantly wear jeans. The styles have changed though — a lot of the leg shapes have loosened up a bit. Younger women are wearing denim in looser cuts but there are still plenty of skinnies, even some with distressing and holes. High waists still dominate. But I see a big mix of people. I kind of hate leggings personally so I am never giving up my jeans, but I have embraced some new pants styles and silhouettes lately. Nice to have variety.

Reporting from the burbs, the high school kids near me are in either joggers or plaid flannel pyjama bottoms. No leggings or jeans. I don’t usually run into college students.

I don’t think I see it here, in downtown of Toronto. Jeans are still popular as well as pants, plus athletic clothes. More leggings now because of the season.
My son works from home and I don’t remember seeing him in sweatpants outside of his apartment. Maybe it’s more common for college towns or suburbs.

My kids are late 20's - early 30's and still in jeans. My sons do tend to wear sweatpants more often but still wear jeans. My daughter and her friends are still in jeans, not many skinnies though.

Interesting! I typically don’t pay much attention to what young people are wearing but will start doing so just to see if I see the shift here. I’m 63 and retired and especially in the winter, jeans are all I wear. In the summer I’ll still wear jeans but mix in some chinos or other lighter weight bottoms.

Hmmm, well I do agree that leggings & joggers are everywhere, but my experience is that jeans are still going strong on every age except elementary and below. In fact I was at the MFA in Boston yesterday thinking skinny’s are definitely not dead. The museum was packed with people of all ages, and most had on skinny or straight leg jeans. Lots of sneakers and lots of chunky/clumpy boots.
I will also add that as much as I love and live in jeans, I love the easy of a good pair of joggers. Especially for flying, and in fact that’s what I wore on my trip to Boston & probably what I’ll wear on the flight home

I think there is subtle shift occurring, I know that my sons (in their late 20s) rarely wear jeans anymore, they tend to wear mostly khakis, some cargos or athletic wear. The girlfriends seem to wear mostly athleisure, leggings or wide leg pants with sneakers, but occasionally some updated style of jeans.

Funny enough though, I did notice the few times that I’ve gone out to concerts to see bands from the boomer generation, the whole audience including the band members were all mostly wearing jeans. It’s like that quintessential fashion signal that represents our former youthfulness. Lots of faded Levis with graphic band t-shirts and leather or jean jackets all harkening us back in time. This seems like my generation’s idea of being cool and still ‘’with It” despite all the decades that have come and gone.

I continue to wear jeans almost everyday since I retired, but I do try to update the silhouette from time to time. Its my idea of being casual and I think jeans will always be around, although they might not be as dominant as they once were, but who knows, fashion is fickle.

Hmm, very interesting observation. By eye, I would say that where I live (northern Italy) it is both jeans and sweatpants, but I will do a more accurate check.

Where I live the youngsters are still wearing jeans, in the modern looser shapes, as well as leggings and sweatpants.
