Angie, the denim jacket was from a local thrift store. They don't do returns. I was looking for boots in all shops I normally frequent. That means some departement stores that stock different brands and some shopping malls with seperate stores.

Scarlet, I like Tamaris! The low shoes I'm wearing at the moment are from Tamaris. The pairs I tried on in the Tamaris shop I was in didn't fit. But they hadn't the whole product line, so maybe I have to look in another shop.

Astrid, have you had a look at boots from Tamaris? I think they might have some stylish boots in the right price range.

Sally, maybe I really shouldn't search for certain things in thrift stores. After yesterday, I think I'm sticking with sales and online shopping.

alaskagirl, you're right about the belt. I will continue my search. I think I also will take a look online.

Ellie, I LOVE your words! I totally kniow what you're talking about. I have to really work on my impatience. And you're right, the jacket is not 100% right. So I will keep looking.

Sveta, I can't return the jacket. But that's okay, it wasn't very expensive. I have sorted through the things I tossed out and I will take a great deal with me when I go home on christmas. My mother and sister can then take a look if they want something, before I toss it. Maybe the denim jacket fits my sister!
And I'm not in the US either. I'm german, currently living in Berlin! But I'm happy you think I'm a native english speaker! So I learned something in school after all. ;)

April, I hadn't posted a thread with my boot issues, but I wrote in some of the cleanup-threads that I'm searching. I can say I have problems with all four points you mentioned, in addition to that my toe area (no idea what's the name for this) is relatively broad. I have short legs, as I'm overall short. Hence the problem with shaft height. Often the shoes are also too narrow in front for my toes to relax. I don't buy shoes that are too tight in this area, no matter how nice they are. I've seen my grandmothers feet and she had to wear too little shoes as a child. I don't want my to toes to ever look like that! And the heel can't be too high, as I'm not accustomed to walk with higher heels and I walk a lot everyday. The price is also a problem. Most of the real leather boots around here cost 150-200 €, I can pay 100 €.

Astrid, I may have missed your postings on this, but what are your particular boot issues? Boots seem to pose problems in these areas:

1. Calf width (too large or too small)
2. Heel height
3. Shaft height
4. Price! Boots are not cheap.

So, what's your sticking point?

If a jacket does not fit well in the shoulders I would pass on it. Can you return it?
Thrift shopping is quite different from the retail shopping. It is always an adventure, a hunt!
Great patience is required as well and you cannot rush things. It can be frustrating when time and time again you cannot find anything and then suddenly you find a gem!
You can also try a discount store like TJ Maxx(I hope I got the name right as we do not have them in Canada). You also can score great things for a great price there.

Astrid, you're so efficient I love this skirt, this was probably my favorite on your other thread. Regarding the jacket, it does not look 100% right to me, the sleeves look too long to start with. Perhaps wait for another one?

I can understand your frustration with a long day that ended without truly satisfactory result, but my advice would be to stick with it and don't get disheartened. Only buy the stuff that really looks and feels good, unless you absolutely have no choice. You are now rebuilding your wardrobe and should not be happy with half-solutions. This is years of shopping failures, mistakes, frustrations and disappointments talking. I am tall and have been at the brink of tears more often than not in the changing rooms because things just didn't fit right, and I had wasted too much money buying things purely because they were long enough, not because I really wanted or needed them! Not that I had very clear idea what exactly to buy in the first place quite often It took me years to understand that one good item is worth more than 10 average ones.

It IS hard to find the right stuff and all the gorgeous stylish creatures that post on this forum don't help at all, do they - they make it look so easy and effortless. You've started so well by editing your wardrobe, putting together a list of what exactly you want and I can understand your impatience to get where you want to be style-wise. I myself am like that now - impatient, perhaps more than I would like to admit. But I believe I have sorted my basics right and that alone took good part of 6 months. I am no longer shopping out of desperation, but I wait for the right thing. Yes, it can seem hopeless, but it's great when you do find something you know you're 100% in love with.

Hope this makes some sense

I like the outfit but agree the skirt could use some reining in - maybe a belt (I know you were searching!)... It would give a cute 50s flair.

I am a big thrift shopper. Many of my friends feel the same as you - if you don't enjoy it, it's definitely pointless, but for the hunter-gatherer in me, it is a great way to spend an afternoon! And I have scored some killer finds in among the (plentiful) trash.

The jacket is nice. Try wearing it unbuttoned. I never button my jacket. Great skirt too.

Thrift shops are time consuming and you actually never know what you are going to find. I do a lot of thrift shops but I sometimes make big mistakes, I enjoy it so I spend a lot of time looking and trying things on and you can never set out wanting something because it all depends what people have taken in. I also have had to alter a lot of stuff I found in thrift shops. That said, you can always find different stuff that may not be the latest trend but means you are wearing something 'different' I wouldn't go to a thrift shop if I need something and have little time.

The skirt is adorable. The jacket would be fine if you unbutton it and roll or scrunch the sleeves. I don't like jean jackets buttoned. I too, have a problem in thrift stores. I would rather shop sales for the most part or online!

There is a lot of fabric bulking out in the second set of photos, #2. I'm not great with alterations but perhaps a waist taken in around there would help. The jacket overall is cute and looks nice with your outfit.

Thanks all!

Srujana, I wear flats for most of the time and if I wear a heel it's only a little one. But I had never heels on my everyday shoes. I don't know if I'm able to walk comfortably a whole day in them. The boots I liked had a chunky heel, so maybe it would be okay.

Bella, The shoulders are a tiny bit to wide. Not so wide that I looks bad, but it's not a perfect fit. It bothered me a bit and I was a while in the changing room because of it, but I decided it was okay.

Edit: Jonesy, I will try to make another picture. On my screen it's good to see, but I will try to make it lighter.

Don't give up...shopping can be daunting at times, but patience and perseverance really does pay off. Your outfit is so adorable here...I really like the polka dots and the swingy skirt with the denim jacket..the pictures are a bit dark so i can't see your shoes all that well but it works well as is. How high of a heel can you handle?

Like planned I went shopping today. But unfortunately I found almost none of the things I was searching for. I didn't found a colorful belt, there were only brown and black ones everywhere. And I wanted to buy some thin shirts, but I found only turtleneck ones - which I didn't want. I went to the thrift stores my friend told me about, but I can't fathom how she can dress herself with those things. I really have to say, it was a heap of trash. Expensive trash! I mean it's second hand, if I have to pay the same price as in a normal retail store, I'm not going to buy it.

I found a denim jacket, though. I swear it was the only passable denim jacket (or item altogether) in three or four stores! I'm not 100% in love with it, but I think it's okay. It looks solid, unworn and the price was alright. What do you think? Please ignore the ballet flats. I searched for boots everywhere today (I was 8 hours on the road!). I found one pair I rather liked, although the heel was a little too high for my taste. And then they weren't available in my size in black. And I haven't found them online. It's hopeless!

Edit: I forgot, I gave away the two dresses and that black skirt for altering. I can fetch them next tuesday.
