Thanks Vani!

Susan, that was a first-thing-in-the-morning photo - no make-up, eek! *And* I am battling a cold. So I'm surprised and quite flattered you say that! Maybe the new color is helping?

As for what I do, I'm also 44. I think a lot of it is just simple lucky genetics. I take after my dad, who has always looked a lot younger than his age, and even now at 69 has very few wrinkles, mostly fine ones, nothing deep, despite never wearing sunscreen and always being outside in the sun and smoking for decades. I smoked since I was 13 - quit only a few years ago. I am surprised the smoking didn't take a worse toll. I also had quite a few nasty sunburns in my youth. But, I have worn sunscreen on my face religiously since around age 23. Not on my chest - which is where you can really see my age. :-(

Otherwise, my skin routine is very simple:

1) I use plain old ordinary soup to wash my face: alternating between a glycerin soap and an antibacterial (Lever). I have always just used soap, despite all the warnings against it. I don't use a washcloth - I tend to think they are abrasive.

3) Apply moisturizer - twice a day. (Morning, Night)

4) Apply foundation (also with suncreen) sparingly where needed.

5) Use a gentle exfoliant scrub every so often (more frequently in winter, when my skin gets dry and flakey). (I like Oil of Olay brand, but I read the tiny beads are harmful to the environment, so I'll be switching as soon as this tube is used up).

For years and years, Oil of Olay was my moisturizer of choice. Since hitting my 40s, I've needed something richer. I've tried a lot of different things. I highly recommend the OoO 14-day treatment: it made a noticeable difference. But it's only for 14 days, not a daily moisturizer:

http://www.olay.com/boutique/r.....cts/re1019

But recently I discovered Lancome Reenergie and I'm completely SOLD!

http://www.lancome-usa.com/ski.....-cream.htm

It's pricey but worth EVERY last penny...

It's actually intended for older skin (50s-60s and on up) with deep wrinkles. But I'm absolutely loving it. It does leave my face brighter, and you can't see any of the fine wrinkles anymore. It feels fantastic on the skin too. Right now, I'm just using the daily moisturizer, but I would also recommend the nighttime cream if you have the $ to spare. It's a bit too rich for me for warm weather - I will be using it again when the winter starts to dry out my skin.

They have a whole system - I got it for DH last xmas. But I just don't have the patience to apply eye cream, serum, neck cream, etc etc... too much fuss!

If you try the Lancome, take before and after photos! I wish I had. I am wanting to try their foundation next.

I really like the new color shiny. The glaze definitely gives it a richer, warmer look which I prefer over last summer's highlights. Whatever you do with your hair though, you always look positively smashing

Thank you, all!

My eye is still adjusting to the color. The photos don't do it justice, because the flash makes it look lighter than it is. I do like it a lot better than the highlights I had this summer. Kari, I think you are right that they were too ashy. The glaze has really improved the condition of my hair, so for that I am very grateful. And, it's a nice change of pace.

Agree this new color is more sophisticated.... I'm just still itching to add a few well-placed highlights to it!

Rena, I think the variation you are seeing is the old highlights under the glaze. I don't think I would go any darker, especially around my face? I have had lowlights put in around my face before, and I hated the effect. Made me look like my hair was all sweaty, and my skin looked dull and lifeless. But maybe that's not what you're talking about?

I really like your new colour Shiny, I think finding the perfect blond is really difficult. I love the stylist at my salon but was thrilled when a new colourist started who understood the type of look I wanted to attain.

Next time you visit the salon why not take the pictures you have posted today to give the stylist an insight into what you like and don't like.

I also have natural red undertones and have found that any blond shade applied would look more golden on my hair than on the swatch.

Ana, you can see how light it was before, with this picture here:
http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....009024.jpg

There's just something off about the color in that pic, it seems weird with my skin tone? I have felt it made me look older, tired, etc.

Whereas last summer I really liked this color:
http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....t08133.jpg

And last February/March I absolutely adored these highlights, which actualy had just a hint of red low-lights:
http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....ots012.jpg

My hair naturally has some red in it. Here is a photo that is completely natural, virgin hair, before I started highlighting:

http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....G_0031.jpg

... I would call this shade "mousy." I don't really care for it; I seem to need more/heavier make-up when it is this shade, and I feel frumpy. That's my DD16 I'm holding! You've seen pics of both my daughters; my hair color when I was a teenager and into college was not this mousy and dark. It was smack between DD16's Jennifer Aniston shade, and DD15's platinum. It went dark after DD16 was born - when the pregnancy hormones made it fall out, it grew back in darker.

I am open to suggestions!

I think your hair looks great, Shiny! I love the color. If your hair was very very light (and it sounds like it was), the caramel glaze was used to just toned it down a bit, rather than making it mousy. I doesn't look mousy at all to me. Are you planning on getting anymore lowlights or anything like that for winter?

Close-up pics... just taken, under my usual lighting conditions.

http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....009054.jpg

http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....009055.jpg

He said it was a caramel glaze, which had me worried, because I didn't want to be too mousy. I still wanted to be blond, just not as light as I have been the whole summer.

I think going lighter is fun for the summer but I was never quite happy with the shade/amount of highlights. But I have a really hard time explaining why or what was bugging me about it, in a way my hairdresser would understand. Was it too brassy? Too golden? Too platinum? Too many highlights? Etc. I just know that under certain lighting conditions, there were spots around my face that were so light, they looked like gray/silver/white hair. It also didn't help the condition was getting dry/frizzy too.

Oooh, I like the cut! Honestly, I'm not very good with color subtleties since I've had black hair all my life and never color it, so I can't really tell that the color is different. I'm sure a better photo would help.

BTW, is anyone going to see Chris Rock's new documentary about hair? I saw him talk about it on Oprah and it looks fascinating (and funny of course!).

I like the color! But you know, it looks paler/cooler to me than in some of your photos from earlier in the week; probably a lighting thing.

Had my hair done today. I really wanted to tone down the blond - it was getting way too light for me. Roots showing too fast for my schedule, and also two different people this month actually asked if my hair was silver-gray!!! Argh! It's not! It was just too blond.

He put in a caramel glaze. I've had glazes done in the past - when my hair got overprocessed. I do like glazes because they greatly improve the hair condition. Next time he says he's going to do a partial foil, but use a different, gentler process that he says will be a "softer" effect.

Hair cut is basically the same as before - I think. It's hard to tell until I style it myself tomorrow. I am not as skilled with the blow dryer as he is.

My question - what do you think of the color? Better? I think this color is actually pretty darn close to my natural hair color, just glossier/brighter looking. It's hard to say since I've been highlighting it for years. But, I can't really tell where the roots were now, so I think that means it's close to my natural shade.

http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....091257.jpg

Yes, another bathroom photo - but the natural lighting was fairly good. And yes, same basic outfit as #3 in the challenge, except with pink NAS blouse.
